About Jaspar, it's quite interesting to compare the earliest with the reunion date (and his pre-US and post-US European recordings). His sound and style certainly changed in an "NYC" way... he sounds a bit unsure on those first sides, and is playing very soft on his early recordings. Not so anymore, after the J.J. experience. The album (reissued on French RCA) he did with René Thomas and an italian rhythm section is ample proof of that, too - quite different from how he plays on his Vogue recordings (petty those CDs are OOP).

Voted for 76-100 but was too lazy to count... the RCA set, the Mosaics, the Private Collection, the Duke's Men, the GRP set, the Okeh, and several of the new Legacy/Columbias and more... maybe I have more than 100 - who cares! Lon's and brownie's and EKE's are longer anyway

Picked up "Very Saxy" yesterday, gave it one spin, and yes, this is soooo good! Here's the cover, nice photo of here, but pretty ugly layout... Ricky Ford (is he mental or what?) is terrific, in my opinion, while Person (to whom I never really warmed... not sure why... I consider him sort of a second rate player... fire away you organ madsters!) is softer, but also quite good. What struck me about the recording is it's nice, upfront, warm sound. Great recording, I'd say (without being an audiophile... it just sounds good, to these ears). Also I picked up her collaboration with Jones/Lewis in those devastating summer sales: Another pretty ugly cover... but some nice music so far. Not your screaming organ with those brass-heavy arrangements à la Oliver Nelson/Jimmy Smith, but somewhat restrained music, with of course more than a touch of Thad. The only thing I do find somewhat disturbing is Harold Danko on electric piano. Not really needed anyway, and not sounding nice. Who would be the soprano soloist/lead player? Jerry Dodgion and one Edward Xiques (I think I met the name before, but have no clue) are both listed as playing flute, soprano and alto. [edited fro spellink]

I've heard those Hipps Vol.2 is up on the bastids: fine stuff, for sure! two volumes from the Hickory House, the third (prob. easier to find, it was a Conn) is with Zoot (plus Zoot's trumpet player, Eardley, and bassist, don't remember), and Jutta's drummer, Ed Thigpen - sort of a mix of Zoot and Jutta's groups.

Well, I wouldn't dare to say this is the best Blue Note album, but they certainly were the best Blue Notes! On the real topic: I have quite a few holes... of course age being a factor here - I wasn't getting into jazz until the early to mid nineties, and back then having enough money for two or three CDs a month, so obviously I missed tons of the late eighties releases. Made good for that by picking many BN Mosaics (still missing the Donaldson and Turrentine, though, and missed the Smith and the trad ones). Then with European EMI stopping releasing real CDs, I stopped buying their product (except for a few Conns that I got in real cheap sales, and the Hill Dance of Death that I got from the US). So what I miss out on is too much to list... a dozen or two of Jimmy Smiths, some Blakey (but not much - missed that Mosaic as well), most of the early BNs, and most of post... say '64 BN - of course I have the Rivers and some Hill - not the Select yet - and some Jackie Mac. But then I'm in no hurry to get all of those... it must be a sad day to realize that there's nothing new you will ever be able to find by some of your beloved artists... (I miss "Thinking of Home" and one or two other Mobes... I suppose I'll wait trying to get them until they're way OOP and hunting them is fun...)

The "organissimo driking through northern germany" tour... now that would be fun! We wouldn't even need a place to stay, since we'd be driking all night long, anway! All the best, my friend! Hope you had a good one, and many more to come!

← I've finally received this disc and had a chance to listen to it. Great music! I agree with Chaney, this one is a keeper. (Mine is #80 out of 113, so there should still be a few copies available.) ← Spinning #83 here right now! good stuff! We supposedly all know how great Powell is (what a pleasure it was to see him live with Gebbia & Goodheart!), but hey, I really like Golia's sound on tenor, and Cremaschi sounds good, so does the whole recording (Powell-made, of course). Open, engaging music... very nice stuff, so thanks a lot to everybody (Tony, mainly!) who recommended it! I certainly don't regret!

plus the just reissued (but not on CD, at least not over here...) "Cannonball in Europe!", a terrific live album, maybe - together with "Nippon Soul" my favourite Cannonball recording!

Two more things to add: Jon - congrats on the great artwork! Looks terrific! And second: I love the sound of the disc a lot! That "like live" sound, warmth and all, that's cool, and so far from many of those clinically clean sounding new releases!

Nice list, Mike! I have about half of the albums and each of those is indeed a masterpiece! I like "cornier" stuff, too, such as Mel Tormé, and yes, Sinatra, but I'm sure the later is not a jazz singer (though he is good at what he does), and Tormé probably has pros and cons... his Bethlehems and early Verves, though, are definitely good albums, regardless if he's to be considered a jazz singer or not. And let me throw in Helen Merrill... maybe the album with Getz and the Kuhn trio, or the one with Brownie, if just one should be recommended... or her early collaboration with Gil Evans!

Why should I like jazz vocals if I don't like jazz, anway? What was I doing on that jazz board again?.... oh yeah, there was the babe thread... then I found out about the goofy stuff on the web thread...

Congrats, Rodney! And I think I haven't mentioned that perspectives to get those new dates have risen considerably, a few days ago! Will take some time, though!

Just chiming in quickly here... I got the disc - thanks a lot! - and gave it a few spins so far, didn't take any notes or so, and didn't really find time to sit down and really listen, but I love the disc so far! The groove on the first cut is terrific! And yes, Randy's harmonica is very soulful! Tenderly... yup, it's nice! All in all, the album is more diverse, and going places, yet there's a shitload of funk and dirty grooves, too - a great mix! 'fraid I haven't made it to the end, so I haven't heard the Zappa cut yet, but I'm definitely looking forward to giving the disc many more spins! Keep cookin'! And make sure to inform us early enough when that European trip is going to happen! One more thing: I love the organ sound on the first track - it's fat and greazy, yet not *just* that, but it has - maybe I need a new set of ears... - touches of the lighter approach, of say a Larry Young, too, and all that at the same time - like it a lot!

I haven't heard much of Butcher's work, but I got this disc from a kind fellow rat: And I find it very good, to say the least! AMG blurb by Steve Loewy: I also heard a live set (on radio, alas) by the trio with Dörner & Charles, and recently got their Potlatch disc (but didn't play it yet).

Today's Frankfurter Allgemeine again says all the samples could be matched. Also they report about a half hour phone call between Armstrong and Leblanc, during which - so says A. - L. did not mention the whole affair at all - but then proceeded to state that A. has "abused" his French fans... And "L'Equipe" has confirmed that they know about the identity of all those cyclists whose tests have yielded positive results. But then again, who cares...

Yesterday played disc 1 and most of disc 2 from the Kid Ory set. Disc 2 was more to my liking, but it all sounded good!

Power to Wayne! May he continue his astonishing run! Ever since he started his quartet I have again and again been fascinated and astonished and well, overjoyed, by the incredible music he produces! Not to mention all his achievements in the past...
