I use Sony, mostly. Never had a bad burn on many a hundred CDRs. Before that I used to have TDK, but they don't always have them anymore at the stores I frequent. Prize: 20 Franks (roughly 15$) for a 50 spindle. As for Japanese stuff: never saw any here, and I reckon prize would be *at least* twice as much as the Sonys (remember, this is Switzerland...) I had extracting problems with Maxells (received in trades - extractions taking up to 4 hours, some I didn't have enough patience to complete... when the remaining time went up to 20 hrs with EAC on "secure"-settings... gets pretty frustrating). With Memorex (I got 100 of those when I bought blanks for the first time) I had 10+% gone bad while burning, so I stopped using them... Burning speed: 8X. The Sonys I buy say 48X, but maximum speed I could choose usually is 24X. How about burning speed for DVDs? I use Verbatim +Rs at 8X.

To go off topic again: there's some Mingus boots around from the seventies with that Brooks guy (sorry, I always mix them up, but I do remember that one's called Billy and the other Roy...) playing some saw.

This is what does *suck* about this series. Even more so since by now these reissues have turned into regular, jewel-case-packed, releases. The digipacks were nice and easier to handle than the mini LPs (which I keep in those plastic bags, so it's a drag to get the out...), which saved shelf-space, though. But now... even the Verve by Request series included the occasional alternate (the Blossom Dearie Oh-la-la comes to mind immediately), so why not these here... really escapes me why they produce regular CDs and still maintain the original album fetishism now that they don't pack them like LPs anymore.

what did this look like then? The mini-LP replicas have been abandoned for a couple of batches already in favour of digipacs with a foldout in the cover. The LPR series seems to have some interesting people at the helm, some have cool stoopid tastes, others are more interested in the classics and yet others like the whacky bits. Of course it's a pity there are no alternate takes, left-overs and the lot on these disks, but other than that, it works for me. No doubt this particular album will pop up at a more friendly price if you wait a bit. I'll keep my eyes open as I will want to replace my vinyl dub myself. ← Normal Jewel Box packaging. Like several other new Verve releases I saw. more than a dozen - they included a Shirley Horn (the one with Miles I think), a Satchmo (available as a VME already, I think), Gato Chapter 4 and many more, some good to see, some weird. I think also a Pres (the one with OP maybe?)...

The Vonski is very nice! I also heard (but don't own) the Shepp one - ok, I'd say (but then I'm cautious of any post... say '77 Shepp). The others I don't know. Just browsed through the recordings... quite a few! I dimly remember reading about four or five of them in some Penguin (4th ed?) - I think they did not get such favourable reviews there... and some of the covers are pretty tasteless...

Is the Gato "Chapter 4 - Live in NY"? If so: it's out, in a jewel pack edition... same as the Lateef and several other new and old titles (Satchmo, Shirley Horn... can't remember, saw a dozen or more in a store yesterday, and they're not labelled as LPRs but as some new series - forgot how it's called. Prize is cheap, and funny enough at least one of the releases is at the same time available in the expensive VME edition... I don't understand Verve...)

One is deliberately taking time off... don't know about the rest... probably just a little bit busy with other things?

Ah ha! No track listing for it so far, though, so no telling if it will be 3 or 4 tracks... ← Tracklist is up now... 4 tracks! Of course I just bought a 3 track version of it... (I still don't understand the ESP CD reissue situation... Calibre, Abraxas, Get/Abraxas Mini-LPs... I guess those are all European-produced and licensed? And ESP is doing its own series in the US? And wasn't there talk about their own reissues being CDRs?)

Slightly off topic, but... for the first time in at least a month I visited a music store here, and saw this Lateef reissue, as well as several other albums in the same series (among them items readily available in their previous editions). Now what's the deal with this new series? WTF? LPRs, ok - those are the ones that show the finger to the reissue community but we're still buying them for lack of availability... is this new series filling the Verve By Request hole? Price-wise they're cool, but then... what's the use of having discs out both in this nice-prize series and in the VME series simultaneously?

Well, here's one funny rat, and here's a great disc (thanks, David!), that this funny rat had with him/herself (what's the sex of "rat"?) while being funnily dressed as depicted above: Radioactivity. 008 CD Sergey Letov - leader, baritone and soprano saxophones, alto flute Yury Parfenov - trumpet, pocket trumpet Alexandr Alexandrov - bassoon Terrific stuff!

Carney even more so than Hodges! He sort of spent his whole life with the Duke...

I picked this disc up in a sale, never having heard (about) it before... and it blew me away and then some! Desmond could do (almost?) no wrong, and yes, even Gadd is not a major problem... a terrific disc! Lon, you should get the CD reissue! Jim (or any other of the Americans): is this a digipack, too, in the US?
