I´m a stupid dumb-ass.... I´m afraid I´ll have to prepare a big ALL-TETE package and send it to some Royal guy in Switzerland... I´d like to increase my Funny-Rat stuff.... Uh, oh, ahem... Me too, it seems...

No drugs here, except for a bit of alcohol sometimes. Never even felt the urge to smoke a cigarette - so why should I. (I guess that's the positive side of me having been quite a loner all the years through school - that hasn't changed since I started at University, five years ago now.) Some favourite beverages include red wine (of course!), guiness, other beer (belgian preferred, or some good Pils such as Jever), and of course my favourite single malts (search for that thread if interested). No sports either. I used to bike but stopped around nine or ten years ago. Nothing since then. Admittedly I might loose a few kilos, but not too many. And then, I feel alright. No special diet, but no or hardly any greasy fast food stuff. No medications, either. ubu

Blindfold Test #13: Disc 1, the "official BFT"
king ubu replied to EKE BBB's topic in Blindfold Test
I was totally sure you´d nail this one! This is the answer, Dan! (And please don't ask where EKE go that disc from Welcome to mikeweil's bft rules again...) ubu (going undercover) Noooooooope! Remember, volumes 1 & 3.... No matter what volumes! I know you have them all, so I could have figured out -

Blindfold Test #13: Disc 1, the "official BFT"
king ubu replied to EKE BBB's topic in Blindfold Test
And what could it be, with guitar? Not what concerns me. I'm sure others have made IDs on that track, but I'm not one to go searching for the answers or puzzling things out. Not what I do the BFTs for, sorry! I try to identify leaders or tunes and leave it at that. I just wondered, as Clifford has been one that came to my mind, too, but then I couldn't think of anything fitting! ubu -

Same here, but omit the "of course" (I'm still young, so my record collection, or rather, CD collection, is already beyond any senible "of course" ) Gotta hunt for that disc in my own private chaos... EKE, I stick with Garrett on #5! Has to be him. The Coltrane link is there, of course, but then I do think there's a few instances where he is very close to Cannonball, too. ubu

This really sucks! I was posting here and then the board went down, right when I had finally finished typing! I'll do it again, in a shorter fashion, as I don't feel like typing all again... Sorry, Agustín! Main thing is, I really enjoyed both of your discs, and I hope to hear more from some of the discs you included tracks on these CDs! 1 - Uh, finally we can hear what EKE listens to all day long... disc 1 was just done to fool us all, right? 2 - This must be the first time someone found out about the inclusion of a recording before listening to the discs, and without reading any of the replies... (more here). Love this tune, love this album, love the pianist, love the tenor man, and it's very cool to hear the lesser known trumpet player in such fast company! 3 - Nont sure about this. I think the pianist is very good, but then the generic percussion and the sound of the electric bass guitar bother me a bit... 4 - Couldn't help thinking this might be the famous Hawk-solo recording on the "Body & Soul" changes - I never heard it (which might be considered a sin, as I'm playing some tenor myself...). Whoever plays, it's a majestic performance! (The one solo track by Hawk that I have, "Picasso", on the "Jazz Scene" set, has Hawk sounding pretty different, but then there's some years in between). 5 - Another one that sounds very familiar! I sure ought to know the name of the tune, at least. Is this Kenny G... uhm, Kenny Garrett? Solid, lots of Cannonball in there. Got a bad feeling here telling me "welcome to the world of mikeweil's bft-rules..." 6 - Woody'n You or Groovin' High (too lazy to check, I always mix up these names). Beautiful trumpet sound! One of my favourites of the two CDs, for sure. I think I should be able to identify the players, but I am not... 7 - Another HELLYEAH for this one! No idea who plays, but it's very nice! The alto is cool and familiar-sounding, great bass playing here, too. Has that liberation-Haden-vibe, but I'm not sure who this actually could be. I'd love to hear more of this! 8 - Nice stuff! Again no need to guess... 9 - More great music! No need to try guessing, as this is an era I have hardly scratched the surface yet... 10 - Tete? Did I get that wrong on disc 1? A beautiful and brooding, moody performance! ... 11 - going right into an upbeat closer of this great set! Some trad retro folks? Sound is too clear for it to be too old. all in all: big and big thank you! ubu

As is this one: Last of the Line. All great stuff! Grab them when you see them, they go pretty cheap. ubu

This is the Woody Shaw I mentioned: Two More Pieces of The Puzzle. It combines Concert Ensemble at the Berliner Jazztage and The Iron Men. The other saxophonist on the second one is Arthur Blythe. Muhal Richard Abrams is on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Joe Chambers and Victor Lewis alternate on drums. Recommended! ubu
-
Yes! It is a fantastic disc! The live performance burns and you get some great Woody Shaw, too. I love the guy in the audience who keeps screaming "do your thang, Roy, DO YOUR THANG!!" Another big Anyone into the percussion thing should also get the Joe Chambers disc on 32. It has Woody Shaw on one track, with Harold Vick, too. Four tracks are percussion (with piano and bass, if memory serves me right). And all them Woody Shaw 32s are great! The double disc set with the Berlin concert (featuring Slide Hampton, by the way, who is discussed in the artists section at this very moment) has on disc two a record called "Iron Men", featuring Braxton and some other cool sax player. Some of the freest Shaw you will ever hear. By the way, Chaney, glad you enjoy the DLTD! It's my only one so far, too... I shall keep those recommendations in mind. ubu

(not that ubu would know of anything to do with such things as mountains - no sports is the one thing I have in common with Mr. Churchill (other than thinking the use of chemical weapons against uncivilized tribes in Iraq is a good thing )) ubu -
I like this one a lot! Might sound a bit dated to some ears, I suppose - at least one friend of mine who was getting into the music around the time this was recorded found it to be a bit boring and lacking individuality, but for that does not apply at all. Any Rivers is great - I have not heard too many of his recordings, but what I heard, I always love! ubu

Blindfold Test #13: Disc 1, the "official BFT"
king ubu replied to EKE BBB's topic in Blindfold Test
As no one has posted in the mean time, I continue with a new post: 9 & 10 - Both are again new to me. No need to guess, as I won't find out anyay. 10 - The pianist reminds me of couw's favourite moaner A beautiful performance! I love this one! Montoliu? He can't be omitted from EKE's BFT, right? 11 - "Valse Hot" (Sonny Rollins). No idea who this is. Not exactly my favourite of the disc. 12 - HELLYEAH! This is more like it! Beautiful, just beautiful! Again, though, no idea... ******** Answers to Disc 2 in the other thread. Thanks again, Agustín! ubu -
Blindfold Test #13: Disc 1, the "official BFT"
king ubu replied to EKE BBB's topic in Blindfold Test
Just replying, no time to read aynthing, and not yet finished disc 2... CD 1: 1 - "Cotton Tail" - awesome vocals! Great tenor! First thought this could be the EKE band with Ella, but then this doesn't really sound like Gonsalves and Ella... A great performance and a great opener! Would like to hear more! 2- I guess I should be able to identify at least the first tenor soloist (is there more than one? Should listen to this one some more...). Everything sounds familiar here! Elvin on drums? Trumpet is solid. The bass sound makes me guess this is from the late sixties or later. Another BFT to include something from the Elvin Mosaic? Must I have it before I am allowed to conduct my own BFT? This track is GREAT! 3 - Early to mid fifties, European, French? Jaspar, Gourley? Would have to check with what I have... Quite a change of pace! Nice one. 4 - Good programming here! Sounds very familiar. Is this one of those Chet Baker sides with some horns added to the quartet? But no, there's no guitar on those... 5 - This tune's a companion to Horace Silvers' "Soulville". Never heard this, I think, but I love the trombone here! Very nice that strolling passage. Very talkative solo. I guess I should be able to identify the trombonist, but I'm not at all sure. Fuller? Guess not, but all other coming up in my head sound even lass probable. 6 - I know this tune... What's it called? One of EKE's underrecorded stride pianists... Nice one! New to me, not only this one, but all of stride piano. I merely scratched the surface so far. 7 - Uh, that screeching sound! Uses the same mute that couw's favourite screecher used all the time... Not sure if I like it that well. Guess I have to listen a few more times. 8 - Probably ought to recognize at least the musicians... Ammons & Stitt? I don't have any of their discs, except for "Leftbank Encores", but I do guess it's them, right? And could someone please tell me the name of this tune? Not too fond of the organ here. Too stereotypical, clichéd playing. Tenors are great, though. ************** more to follow here, gotta run. I'm into Disc 2 yet, but no time now... ubu -

Your wife could talk with couw - he loves that other trumpet player, you know? And to imitate trumpet players that screech (as they say), they needn't verbally understand each other ubu roi habla español! Chicas come patatas fritas... socialismo o muerte... viva josé martí! and so on... Seriously: I learned spanish for three or four years at school, and at the end I was on the same level as with French, but I've lost them both since then... ubu -

I guess the French would invite, even! Where to meet if not in Paris And we all should read a daily dose of Balzac, Walter Benjamin, Le livre des cent, Baudelaire and other such healthy stuff, in order to be prepared for some rites de passage... ubu -

Artists Who Should Have Had a Mosaic...
king ubu replied to Leeway's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Actually I think it would be important to include the 40s Decca sessions. There are several tracks from those years that remain unissued, and a Mosaic set might be the only way to ever get them out. For example, Lunceford only cut two sessions in 1945 for Decca, four tunes on each session, and still only two from each were ever issued. Clearly Decca had lost interest in Lunceford by that time, so no wonder that Lunceford switched label affiliation after that year. If Lord is correct, there were also sessions in the mid-40s for World Transcriptions, from which some tracks were issued on Decca and others not. Classics only included those that were on Decca. It would be nice to have them all. By the way, although it hasn’t anything to do with Decca, there are plenty of live sessions from the mid-40s, which featured many tunes they didn’t record commercially, and I think very little of it has come out on CD. Someone should do them. Lunceford is getting neglected these days. Sounds reasonable. I'm the lucky owner of the Colubmia 4LP set (found it used, it's in ok shape, but far from perfect). Collecting as much as could be done would be the best - Decca, Columbia, Decca again... and and accompanying Select with airchecks... -
Not that I laugh at that. No! I know this does happen from time to time. ubu

There is nothing worse than an overdrawn king. For the record, I think this was a great idea. It's fast, easy, and for a good cause! At least, Mr. Catesta, the king has the bogaloo sisters, and he likes'em a lot! ubu B) -
The tempo for me is already too fast as it is now! I hardly listened to the RDK test and had EKE's coming in already. Still not been able to listen to that one... And I'm afraid I have again to be moved up a few places... I'm working on mine since about #7 or #8, but I'm no way near having transferred everything. This requires another note: my BFT will include lots of music that is not available. Rare stuff, swiss stuff, broadcast stuff - I will just spread some goodies, and some personal (and sentimental) favourites. If someone absolutely feels a need for getting something, they will know who has it, right? And asking is free, or course ubu
