  1. Funny you should post this! I was on the verge of posting it, a couple of hours ago, but then I had no time to really read it here at work... ubu
  2. London, oh yes! They distributed Riverside. That's how I got to hear the 'Monk Plays Ellington' and 'The Unique Monk' albums first, back in the late '50s before the original Riverside albums landed in France. I'm not sure they distributed Pacific Jazz in England. Vogue England had a deal with PJ if I remember well! You may be right. I had that Chet Baker Sextet (with Brookmeyer, Shank added to the quartet) 10" borrowed from the late father of a friend of mine a year ago. Guess it was indeed a Vogue one. But I've got some rather dumbass book for jazz dummies trying to list essential records, and in that one, lots of what we know as OJCs today, have the London logo on the cover. Would have to look up what releases exactly they are to find out. Not sure it's only Riverside. ubu
  3. welcome! Stick around! btw, its Flurin (Florian, with "o" would be the german variant of my name) ubu PS: I know I still owe you that list of the Vogue reissue series...
  4. I'm embarrassed to say this is the position I'm in at the moment , I keep trying to cut down on my purchases but this internet makes it sooo difficult.I find a thread about hard to find Trane Cds that were only released in Japan - a handful of clicks later & they are on the way to my door. This year I thought I'd just stick to Mosaics that are running low & a few new releases , & what happens - the running lows seem to be coming along all the time. I know how that feels - that's been the state here for all last year, right into last january. Now I seriously try to stick to used CDs (there's one shop here that has some good stuff, but you got to buy instantly, as usually the next time you're there, someone else has gotten hold of the new arrivals...), where I found hats, FMPs etc for like 5 bucks. Then no one will keep me from getting Mosaics on the running low list (but lucky enough I started to buy them by release date rather than by immediate interest of mine maybe four years ago, so I had lots of those that went OOP during the last two years, and did not buy any for quite some time, except for the Atlantic NO this january). ubu
  5. Thanks everybody for sharing your knowledge here! I loved John L's avatar right from the first time I saw it. Mystery solved now! (btw, London, a british label (?), seemed to have a similar distribution deal - I remember having seen some Pacific stuff on London releases)
  6. This is sad news (notwithstanding I never heard anything by Gito Baloi). Hope we would have more exposure to ZA-jazz here! ubu
  7. I guess you have the Koch reissue of his "Cool, Calm, and Collected" album? It's fantastic! (As is the recent Fantasy twofer) On the Wilson: get it! Some of the best, most relaxed, easy flowing, piano trio music, and full of great ideas from Wilson. A true master! Also the changing rhythm sections make things interesting. Not boring at all, to my ears! And the only boring date might be the first live one (Newport '57, I believe), otherwise it's really a great set. ubu
  8. Sorry! I was just going to buy one, but.... that "Buy It" button is so easy to press.
  9. Hell, if there only would be good libraries here, as jazz is concerned! I am right now trying to massively cut down my cd expenses. Being a student, I spent everything I have on music, and I intend to change that a bit, with the means of a buying freeze... I'll try not to buy any (or not many) disc for at least some months... need to save a bit of money for various reasons. It's a hard thing, but I seriously intend not to buy anything except real cheap stuff, or stuff that goes OOP and that I know I got to have (like the VeeJay Mosaics, for instance). ubu
  10. Tony, welcome! Nice to see you over here! (nothing to add on topic, sorry) ubu
  11. Some favourites have been mentioned (Mimosa, Ascenseur pour l'echafaud, the Coltrane Village Vanguard...), one more that comes to mind, rather, a bunch more: all the music from Bill Evans' Vanguard date with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian - I really couldn't say which version I'd prefer of which tune - I got to know it all together. Then Bird's "Cheryl" - couldn't tell which of the two takes I would prefer. ubu
  12. have you ever heard Arkady Shilkloper playing solo alphorn? (He does this with the group Pago Libre - not strictly jazz, but amazing beautiful music, in my opinion! I can recommend "Ein Fester aus Jazz", too! I got it used from someone, very early in my jazz acquaintance. There are some very interesting articles, on Oscar Pettiford, McCoy Tyner, Tony Williams, on spirituality in jazz, and also on jazz in the GDR, if I remember right. ubu
  13. Hi Bev, I've re-read this and the "Ein Fenster aus Jazz" two weeks ago on two 16h flights and was amazed how good it is still (the Jazzbook in its '73 release and the other in a '77 one) and I was also surprised by the some of the articles... I would still rate his recommendations a being "essential" even in the light of Fusion but what I found even more interesting is the "political" aspect he brought up (read the Fenster aus Jazz Interview with Albert Mangelsdorff) as this was one element of the end 60's Discussion in Europe... Cheers, Tjobbe These are the two Behrendt books I have. I got the "Jazzbuch" when I got started with jazz, maybe ten or eleven years ago. I always enjoyed it, still do. It has been replaced by the Penguin guide(s) as daily reference since my collection has grown, outgrown the Behrendt suggestions (some of which, though, I still miss, not only on the fusion side). My next step were some rather short biographies (Miles, Trane, Mingus, Monk, Ornette, german books published by "Oreos Verlag" or something, not bad, but not outstanding, either). There's a fun book called "Jazz for Beginners", sort of a comic book, with satyrical drawings etc - like that one, too. (It's part of some "educational" series, I also have had "Kafka for Beginners", with drawings by Crumb). ubu
  14. Ubu: You are somewhat safe regarding the Vee Jays while the Mosaic web site is down. Hey, why is it down again? I had access on friday!?! (Or did I only have access because it was still saved on my computer?) ubu
  15. Four Brothers, or Always Look At The Bright Side of Life... Though usually only on vibrate. ubu

    Funny Rat

This sounds even worse then when I saw him last year! Shit! He did that boogie thing, too, at the end of both sets, also the call & response with the audience at the end of the second set. Menegan (-on?) is boring, indeed! When I saw him, John Betsch was on drums. Marcotulli was pretty good, I thought, but all in all - sad to say, and I hope I'll be proved wrong! - he seems to be through... ubu
  17. Same here, only two months ago, already! Get it while you can! ubu (and PLEEEEEZE stop buying the VeeJays! I need to have them but don't know yet how I can...)
  18. I like this one! How about Braxton/Max Roach? I only have one HatART disc, and, as so often, long time no listen ubu
  19. Absolutely! ubu
  20. The Clark/Chambers/Philly Joe trio is one of my favourite. Their Blue Note album is GREAT! Also check out this one: Seems Clark is not new to you - I would recommend these two to hear what he was able to do as a musician, some of his best solos, in my opinion! ubu PS: I love the opening tune on "The Conversation"! I have to repeat that at least once each time I spin the album!
  21. And I'm afraid even Basie won't help against that! ubu
  22. That may be, but he's growing old frighteningly fast! ubu
  23. Send some of these my way, too, please! ubu
  24. It has. I got the CD in London maybe three years ago. ubu I dont think its available anymore.( I cannot find it on the web anywhere.) I payed like 25£ for it! Crazy, but that the Coltrane record I was looking for forever, it seemed, and there it was, in the shelf of one of those terrible large cd stores, can't recall the name, but it was right in the centre of the city, maybe on Picadilly Circus? If you get there, have a look, I found several of the very first VEE discs, there, too. They have each disc about 10 times standing there, so it takes a couple of years till they sell them, it seems. ubu
  25. couw surprises... greedy couw! ubu
