I love everything about this guy. His voice and, especially, his superlative musicianship. One of my particular favorites is the version of"Rockin' Chair" he does with Satchmo. Just so laid back and relaxed. There is an excellent Teagarden documentary I saw several years ago. If you ever get a chance to catch this, don't pass up the chance. You'll be an even bigger fan because of it. Up over and out.

I've noticed this too. I'm guessing this is a simple bait and switch technique and that they are fully aware of what they're doing. Made you look, indeed. Up over and out.

Here's another "youngest" question for your consideration. Who was the youngest pitcher to ever pitch in a major league baseball game? How old was he? Who did he pitch for? What year? Up over and out.

Any chance there's still any unreleased Reid Miles covers???
Dave James replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
I've always wondered what was up with the unused number in the 1500 series. It's 1553, right between 1552, Jimmy Smith at the Organ Vol. 2 from 2/12/57 and 1554, Art Blakey - Orgy in Rhythm, Vol. 1 from 3/7/57. Up over and out. -
Oops. My bad. I just went back and read the original e-mail. Looks like this sale is limited to thsoe who are already on the Collector's Choice e-mail list. Sorry about that. Also, the Hackett set I went for is on backorder, so who knows when I'll get it. Maybe that's the price you pay for the low ball cost. Up over and out.

I don't buy much from these guys as they tend to be pretty overpriced. However, with 15% off and free shipping, they can get pretty competitive. For example, I just went down for the Bobby Hackett Mosaic (one I've been on the fence about since it came out) for a grand total of $65.00. It was already marked down 15% so the total discount came to 30%. With no additional S&H, not a bad deal. As to the music...I still have my doubts...but I couldn't pass this one up at that price. I've got a 190 pound Mastiff named Cookie. When she lays one on you it's like a warm washcloth. I love it. Can't get enough of those doggie kisses. Up over and out.

Sports: 2006 WNBA Play-Offs
Dave James replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Taking a page from the book of "Who Cares", we have the WNBA and the WNBA playoffs. I enjoy watching most women's sports, especially fast pitch softball, but women's basketball does nothing for me. It looks like a pick up game at your local "Y" between a bunch skinny guys with long hair. Up over and out. -
Mosaic big box sets
Dave James replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
88 big box sets. First set, Serge Chaloff. Last set, Dizzy Gillespie. 11 Selects. Love the O'Day (jazz singing at its very best) and the Crusaders is definitely not overrated. Up over and out. -
There used to be two Towers here in Portland. One on the westside and one on the eastside. The westside location has been gone for years. The other one is still there. It used to have a passable jazz section, even some odd lot Japanese imports, but I was out there for the first time in a while the other day and, at least as far as jazz goes, they're down to the seeds and stems. Other genres are still well represented, including classical. The only B&M in these parts that's worth even half a hoot is an independent called Music Millenium. They've been around since the '60's. I don't think you actually have to listen to this to have a pretty good idea what it sounds like. Everyone knows the drill; spanky bass, drum machine-like percussion, maybe some pseudo rap lyrics, a synth or two. That's what this stuff is all about. It's so cookie cutter, there is absolutely no way someone like Wayman Tisdale is going to do anything that 50 other smoothies haven't done to death already. Up over and out.

A friend of mine here at work ordered the Coltrane box July 31st. After inquiring about the status of his order last week, he received the following e-mail this morning: Thank you for your order with Concord Music Group, Inc. Unfortunately, John Coltrane Prestige Recordings (16PRCD-4405-2) is out of stock. It will not be available since it is now a deleted title. Your credit card has not been charged. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me directly at 1-800-551-5299. Thanks again. I hate to be the bearer of potentially bad tidings, but I thought folks would want to be aware of this development. Up over and out.

Dan, I don't know about this on again off again thing. Four days ago, you'd checked out completely. I recall saying to myself, with Dan gone, who am I going to have to annoy? Now, it appears you're back. This kind of fence sitting reminds me of the Democrat's connnumdrum over what to do in Iraq. Do we leave now? Do we stay the course? Do we get out but stay close enough to get right back in? I'm afraid we're going to have to call for a decision. Perhaps after this weekend in Fenway? Up over and out.

Yes, yes, yes..to not do so is just so much melonious bunk. Next thing I know you guys are going to tell me you don't put salt in your beer. Whatsammata wit youz? Up over and out.

MLB - Yankees NHL - Red Wings NFL - Eagles NBA - Could not care less. Lest anyone confuse me with being a fair weather friend, the Yanks, Wings and Eagles have been my favorite teams since the '50's. Up over and out.

Sample Questions From The Application: Dan, you sly dog. You already have the application. How did you get one? You must have some real clout. Of course, after the Sox last three games, I can understand how you might be willing to go to extraordinary lengths to get your hands on one of these. Let me know if you need any help. Oh and by the way, the answers to all the questions are "agree". Don't tell anyone I told you that. It will only hurt your chances. Up over and out.

Al, As we all know, there are only two kinds of baseball fans. Those who are fans of the Yankees and those who don't know it yet. I have in my hands a form that allows you to apply to become a fan of the Yankees. In order to do so, you must agree to sever any remaining ties with the Texas Rangers but, based upon your short and long term experiences as a Rangers fan, I wouldn't think this would be a problem. Now I must warn you, acceptance into the Yankee fraternity is not automatic. However, I do have some pull with the decision makers, so I think I can get you in. Just let me know if you're interested and I'll get the paperwork underway. Up over and out.

Yeah, a nice effort all around from the Yanks yesterday. On a super hot day when the Toronto starter can only go three, they get a solid six from their new guy. Definitely a step up from Shawn Chacon or Sidney Ponson. Abreu looks very sharp. He's hitting .385 since joining the Bombers and the fact that he doesn't have to be THE MAN, will be to his benefit. The Yanks are hitting on all cylinders right now, 8-2 in their last ten, good chemistry in the clubhouse, maybe the hottest pitcher in all of MLB in Wang. Just hope we can keep this up. Word is the Sox will try to make a deal for Javy Lopez, but he still has to clear waivers. Wonder if anyone will claim him just to keep him out of Boston. Not that he's the catcher they need. He's only caught 21 games this year and he hasn't caught back to back games since who can remember when. But, he still has to be an upgrade over Mirabelli and Huckaby. Sox fans have to be concerned about Beckett. He's a lot like Randy Johnson as in which Josh is going to show up on a given night? He can be absolutely dominating, but he can just as easily get lit up like he did last night. On ESPN this morning, Dave Campbell says he thinks the Yanks, the Tigers and the Sox (White) are the three non-West Division playoff teams. You go, Soup. Up over and out.

Happy Birthday Lon (jazzbo)!
Dave James replied to king ubu's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Lon, Yes...hopefully this is a great day for you and that things in general are looking up. Pull the trigger on some good tunes for yourself, maybe something you've been wanting but kept putting off. Whatever you do, just enjoy it. You're one of the good guys. Up over and out. -
I'm not really into country music
Dave James replied to Bright Moments's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I think if one picks and chooses carefully, there's some OK country music out there. I've been putting together some compilation CD's using i-Tunes and I made one of nothing but country. Some of the artists I included were Dwight Yokum, Reba, Tammy Wynette, Don Williams, Asleep At The Wheel, Merle Haggard, The Mavericks (their lead singer, Raoul Malo, has a really good voice) and even one by Roy Rogers. Yes, that Roy Rogers. I saw Lyle Lovett's Large Band a couple of years back. Not exactly all country all the time, but very tight and very entertaining. I've also seen Dwight Yokum. He puts on a good show. He's got a fair amount of charisma. Far from my music of choice, but on occasion, I can get into it. Up over and out. -
