  1. GEORGE LEWIS And His New Orleans Stompers "Dont Go 'Way Nobody" "Careless Love Blues" with Avery "Kid" Howard, Jim Robinson, Lawrence Marrero, Edgar Mosley, Chester Zardis CLIMAX 105, 12" 78 RPM. "Distributed by Blue Note Records, N.Y.C" Can you just put the $1,000,000 into my PayPal account? Let me know if that works for you and I'll provide you with the details. Thanks.
  2. If he did, I'm just glad I wasn't there. Nothing says "put me in coach, I'm ready to play" like showing up overweight and out of shape. You'd think someone whose spot on the team is by no means assured would put a bit more thought into his off-season training regimen.
  3. Looks like Joba Chamberlain has located the pounds shed by teammate C.C. Sabbathia and found something unproductive to do with them, i.e. adding them to his own, already hefty frame. Brian Cashman says Chamberlain is obviously heavier and that the Yankees will deal with this "privately". Joba isn't talking at all except to say he "feels great". Between him, C.C. and Bartolo Colon, it brings a whole new meaning to the idea of having a well-rounded pitching staff.
  4. At one time many years ago, and outside of Powell's, the Borders I frequented in downtown Portland was the place to go for books and, sometimes, even for music. Huge selection and, as Berigan says, some pretty obscure and interesting titles. This is the classic case of a successful business resting on its laurels and turning a blind eye as they steered past the signs warning them of the sea changes underway in their industry. Late to the dance on the internet, eBooks, eReaders, you name it. Ultimately, they paid the highest possible price, that of irrelevance.
  5. Huh? I will always maintain that doping does NOT make one go from mediocre shlub to star athlete. It may give an "edge" but the training, strategy, and physiology that make a star athlete are still there in spades. Most people do not understand that, and think that the drugs "make one better." In most cases, they artificially ease recovery or perhaps sharpen one's reflexes for a short amount of time. That's the extent of systematic performance enhancement. As a former amateur cat 3 roadie, using drugs wasn't going to make me a Tour winner. Dig? If I follow your line of reasoning, then what Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa did is OK with you because they were already good athletes. You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I don't have to agree with it. Dig?
  6. Your name is BeBop and you're located on planet Earth. How would anyone find you to ask?
  7. Creepy, sure, but it tells the story it aims to tell. Thanks to auto-tuning. Today's crop of faux singers ought to pay T-Pain 10% of their gross.
  8. Interesting "what if" scenario. ***WARNING***MARINER FANS***SPOILER ALERT*** http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/thehotstoneleague/2014230192_revisionist_pondering_imagine.html?syndication=rss
  9. What's your opinion of Goldie Hawn? Reportedly, she smells bad, doesn't bathe very often. Now we're talkin'. Makes me feel like I've retreated to the late 60', the same place where goofiness and pretty women were not mutually exclusive.
  10. Seems to me there was some discussion of Cochran a while back. Part of another thread? Bobby Hutcherson perhaps?
  11. Oh joy. For Yankee fans, the hits just keep on coming (unless you're A-Rod). Sources tell ESPN that a noticeably slimmer C.C. Sabbathia has become more circumspect when asked about the possibility of opting out of his contract after the 2011 season. Up until now, he's pooh-poohed the possibility. My Lordy me. I fear that powers higher than myself have decided to punish my boys for all the success they've had over the years.
  12. Wait a minute, did you say that Sarah Palin is attractive? I was not aware. For a 47-year old woman? Yes. We're not talking Meg Ryan circa When Harry Met Sally attractive, but I've seen worse...a whole lot worse.
  13. I agree, from a jazz perspective, she's pretty insubstantial. I think there's a little of what I call Sarah Palin syndrome afoot here in that her physical attractiveness makes up for her shortcomings in other areas. I've said all along that if Palin looked like Janet Reno, she would have had trouble getting elected dog catcher in Wasilla, much less mayor. And if Spalding looked like Moms Mabley, I'd like to introduce you to Justin Bieber, best new artist of 2010.
  14. Wasn't that the one where he played cello in the marching band? I loved that scene. That's the one. I forgotten that scene. He has the cello and a chair and every time he gets ready to play, he has to get up and move to keep up with the band.
  15. How come no one ever mentions Take The Money And Run? If you're at all a fan of absurdist humor, it doesn't get much better than this. There are more memorable set pieces in that film that you can count. God, even the parents wearing Groucho glasses when they're interviewed is classic. Not to mention the whole bank robbery scene. I know this is far from anything deep or truly meaningful, but if you just need a good laugh, it's right up there with Blazing Saddles. The poor man's Cool Hand Luke.
  16. thank you, sir. benny is a delight. sixty feet straight up is awesome. i climbed a big fire tower in our forest a few weeks ago and it freaked 67 year old me. how do they service those huge metal transmission line towers? Carefully. Actually, I think they have a squirrel cage ladder system that runs up the middle of the structure.
  17. Interesting idea for a post. When I was in college, I worked on the Union Pacific in Eastern Oregon. Two of the summers I worked as a signalman. This involved digging post holes, setting poles, attaching cross arms, glass and stringing wire. I've climbed some sixty foot leaners in my day. I'll bet the ones we worked on are still up and running. Thanks for the video. That's a pretty cool version of the song.
  18. http://www.jazzwisemagazine.com/news-mainmenu-139/67-2010/11736-jazz-breaking-news-beatles-stevie-wonder-and-king-crimson-numbers-feature-on-kurt-ellings-new-album-the-gate- Oddly, Elling's voice fits that song perfectly, I bet. I can almost hear him singing that line "she sleeps in a chair"....just seems like the kid of material he'd pick. Just heard it last night. It works and quite nicely.
  19. I sent a note to the seller and received a response yesterday. He said he could either send another one (which he said he could get to me in two weeks) or he would give me a full refund. My question is, if he couldn't get the first one to me in six weeks, how can he say he get a second one to me in two? Is there a shipping method available to sellers in the U.K. that circumvents whatever it is that holds up the process?

  22. Interestingly enough, the Sox are looking at Aceves as a potential starter.
  23. News regarding the imminent demise of the New York Yankees has apparently been greatly exaggerated. I just learned today that my boys have signed Eric Chavez and Raphael Belliard to minor league contracts. And here I thought the offseason was a complete and unmitigated disaster. I guess that'll teach me not to fire before I aim. I take back everything bad I ever said or thought about Brian Cashman.
