The burden here should not be on the consumer (Larry), it should be on the provider (the librarian). For better or for worse, the world is full of folks for whom B immutably follows A. End of report. -

For awhile in the '50's, she was as big (no pun intended) as anyone in Hollywood. Not too many women can claim that they had a bra designed specifically for them by Howard Hughes. Jane Russell could. Loved her in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Paleface and Son of Paleface. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/01/movies/01russell.html?hp

That was hardly the main gist of your response, which was more like "I know (or at least seriously doubt) that you're not serious", when, for the reasons I gave, I was completely serious. You have a point there, so let me amplify/modify. Your response to Medjuck's post seemed to me to say 1) that anyone who has the responses you understood him to have had is living deep in a semi-ancient past that may never have even really existed, and 2) that you're puzzled that anyone could think in those benighted ways in the 21st Century. I then took 2) to mean that you not only really didn't understand how anyone could think that way but also were puzzled that there even was anyone who still thought that way. This last is what I found it hard to believe that you believed. I'm sorry, but I'm going to need a translator.

Thought the passing of Duke Snider should not go without comment. Even though he killed the Yankees in the four World Series New York and Brooklyn played during the '50's (.323 BA; 10 HR; 29 RBI's) I always had a grudging respect for the way he played the game. Here's a pretty good remembrance from Michael Farber, one of S.I.'s baseball writers. Read it all the way to the end. You'll be glad you did. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/michael_farber/02/27/duke.snider/index.html?eref=sihp

I stand corrected.

I haven't seen The Oscar telecast since Shakespeare In Love won Best Picture instead of Saving Private Ryan. That was it for me. Nonetheless, I was somewhat disappointed to find that True Grit did not fare well. Thought is was Oscar worthy in several areas. IMO, the whole show is nothing but a self-indulgent love fest. Hollywood-phony in every possible respect. What's the point of actually watching it?

I came late to The Sopranos, but once I got into it, I was completely hooked. I think my wife and I mainlined the first three seasons in one weekend. Couldn't get enough of it. IMHO, the very best television that has yet been made. I love Mad Men, Six Feet Under and others that rise nearly to its level, but The Sopranos is at least a whole head taller than all the rest. Anyhow, a few weeks ago, I stumbled upon what may be the most thorough analysis of the final scene in the final episode that you're likely to run into. It's quite lengthly, a virtual frame by frame exegesis, with lots of extras, but if you're at all interested in what may have happened at the restaurant that night, here's a pretty good look: http://masterofsopranos.wordpress.com/the-sopranos-definitive-explanation-of-the-end/

Nice story in today's NYT about Yogi Berra and Ron Guidry. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/24/sports/baseball/24yogi.html?_r=1&hp

There's nothing in baseball that rises to the level of a great defensive play. Easily my favorite part of the game. I'm addicted to ESPN's Webgem segments during the regular season. Thanks for sharing those videos, David. The Jeter clip brings back some great memories, although I've never been completely convinced that Giambi was out on the play. That sequence and the one where Jeter goes into the stands behind third base to flag down a foul ball are two of his very best. Another shortstop who doesn't get his defensive due is Garry Templeton. Man, that guy made some plays. I'd post a video, but MLB keeps such a tight rein on their brand that there aren't any available.

Not to mention that he's a fair to middlin' timbales player.

Leave us not get too jacked up about what amounts on Mr. Steinbrenner's part to pure posturing. The big market teams are looking for some "cap relief" from MLB and this is just a shot across the bow.

Dan, Here's a picture of Colon taken right after he reported to the Yankees camp in St. Petersburg:

What does that mean? The idea that if you expose yourself to as many different things as possible (music, art, literature, science, etc.) you'll be a better person for having done so. I'm not sure I would limit that to the middle class or to the 50's. It's still true.

Whoa, Happy T. Just curious why you feel that way.

Ping has the look of something that might, and I emphasize might, appeal to a 10-year old. If you want to get rid of it, here's a roadmap: http://gadgetwise.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/28/qa-when-ping-is-not-your-thing/

News from St. Pete: Bartolo Colon, in an effort to ensure that his major league career is, in fact, over, has shown up in camp 25 pounds overweight. One of my all-time favorite sports nicknames was given to "Dinner Bell" Mel Turpin, a guy who pretty much ate his way out of the NBA. Sounds like the time may be right to blow the dust off and bring this one out of retirement. The Yankees' attempt to sign Kevin Millwood to a minor league deal similar to that of Freddie Garcia has been rebuffed by Mr. Millwood. Apparently he sees this as an unconscionable affront; totally disrespectful of a man whose record with the Orioles last year was 4-16 with a 5.64 ERA in 31 starts. If this doesn't prove anything else, it shows that there's at least one person on the planet who's dumber than Bartolo Colon.

I just wanted to mention how proud I am to be part of what may be the best example of a derailed thread in the history of Organissimo. -

Saw a list the other day of actual quotes from men having colonoscopies. The best of the bunch was the guy who asked the doctor to be sure to tell his wife that they didn't find his head up there. -
I'm late to the party on both of these, but I'm almost to the end of the 3rd season of Mad Men and, at the same time, getting into Foyle's War. Not to beat a dead horse, but Mad Men is around the bend terrific and Foyle's War has the makings of something that could easily crack my all-time Top 5. Also, with respect to an earlier reference to Office Space, I believe it's pieces of flair.
