  1. Good thing for me the Hemphill was reprinted! I only learned about these re-issues after joining this forum, December 2012. I love all four I got so far (Dixon, Hemphill, Carter/Bradford, Steig). Fabulous albums, exemplary re-issues.
  2. Yesterday, I ordered two more Rollins titles, Plus 4 and Tenor Madness, both released in 2013. For Worktime I definitely prefer the SHM to the K2. I'm not so sure I need SHMs of the Davis titles with Coltrane, however. The box set from a few years ago with 24bit mastering by Joe Tarantino is really nice.

  4. If you have those two double discs (no longer available cheaply) from Delta/Laserlight, you have everything. The same if you have all three Trema digipaks. The part 3 digipak from Trema is track 5 from disc 1 and the whole of disc 2 of the first concert (Delta/Laserlight). Round Midnight and Night in Tunisia were the only tunes also played during the second concert. The first 1993 Trema double CD you list contains the first four songs from the first concert and the whole of the second. That one is still available cheaply. So Delta/Laserlight spreads all material from the two concerts over four discs. The Trema digipaks spread the same material over three discs. The 1993 Trema double CD is incomplete and contains everything from parts 1 & 2 from the digipaks, though in slightly different order.

  6. Are the UK in need of their own Delta Works?
  7. Is this the one? I downloaded that one with bittorrent (FLACs) and it didn't sound good. The samples on Allmusic from Parts 1 & 2 from the 2000 reissues sounded more promising. I'll await the arrival of part 3 before deciding. p.s. You might say what does sound quality matter on a release like this, but the 1960 Davis Coltrane Olympia concert sounds quite good.
  8. I hope that's because you found another version of he material...or becuase you're broke (not hoping that you're broke, mind you, just that that was the reason)...those are some "smoking dates", as they say in the former vernacular. In the recently resurrected Blakey thread one poster remarked that on set 3 in particular Wayne nukes the joint leaving no survivors. I managed to find an affordable 'like new' copy of part 3. The other two sets in this 2000 Trema reissue elude me at the moment. Too expensive. I bought the Miles Davis Olympia 1960 concerts on these 2000 Trema reissues on release and am very happy with them. Still, perhaps I should buy the previous 1993 Trema 2 CD release of parts 1 & 2 which is still available affordably.
  9. Better to cut his Housing Benefit. I'm sure he has plenty of excess bedrooms.
  10. Nothing resembling a real winter here, so far. I'm fine with that.
  11. Yeah, that's a pretty great CD. No idea how hard or easy it might be to find these days. Since it's a bootleg, you could just as easily download it from that torrent site. Côte Blues (JMY 1010-2) contains material from 26 & 28 July 1963 (the official release being from the 27th).
  12. I'm also a big (Blue Note) Hutcherson fan. I bought two 70s Hutchersons on BNLA999 reissues, one of which is not on the Select (the live album with Woody Shaw). Frankly, I'm more interested in next month's Head On SHM. I've downloaded FLACs of the Select and in the end only got the studio album with Woody Shaw on it.
  13. I'm currently listening to John Patton's That Certain Feeling on repeat. I love the granular quality of the organ sound, which becomes even more pronounced on certain passages. Ponder sounds terrific as well. A quality release for sure.
  14. There was an item on NPR about that , last week. Was it someone here who posted this link earlier on?

    Jimmy Ponder

Now listening to the SHM of John Patton's That Certain Feeling. Sadly, I wasn't aware of Jimmy Ponder at the time of his passing last year, even though I had a copy of Andrew Hill's Grass Roots. I bought his solo disc Live at The Other End then. Now I realise I need even more Ponder. Since Woody Shaw's composition Moontrane is a favourite I ordered Somebody's Child today. Jimmy Ponder didn't even have his own entry in the 4th and 8th Penguin Guides.
  16. Other people might disagree. I'm no audiophile. I do not even really like comparing different masterings. Unfortunately, it's a necessity.
  17. I didn't call you dishonest ... read my post... I said that if you are suggesting that you don't mind people changing the subject on you when you are talking in person to people .... then I find that statement to be dishonest.... as I said I don't believe anyone likes that. You were the one who made the analogy between live conversation and the discussion in threads here and I make a comment on that and then you tell me I am not using an apt analogy.... It's YOUR analogy dude ....Sheesh I wonder why you can't read erwbol's posts? Can't we just talk about Bootleg Vol. 3? For the same reason I can't read his since his return from absence. The guy plainly likes to divert any topic he participates in to his own current preoccupations. He also likes to pick fights with people he knows he fundamentally disagrees with anyway. (For example with Lon over cables, hi-fi equipment etc.) I'm not saying Scott is a troll, but I do not care to read most of what he posts. I'm sure some people don't care about my posts either. That's fine with me.
  18. Now listening to Speak Like A Child (again). I listened to the first track right after Maiden Voyage and felt a bit let down. This disc is a bit louder and does not sound as impressive in general. Perhaps to be expected from a dressed up piano trio recorded by Rudy Van Gelder. Some time ago I downloaded the RVG and didn't like what I heard. Last year I found a cheap near mint copy of the BN Works on ebay. That one had too little highs (what people refer to as the rolled off top?). Great record, though. Nice photo of Herbie with prehistoric headphones on on the inside of the back artwork.
  19. Oops, I forgot about Somethin' Else. I had the RVG and now have the hybrid SACD. Thanks for the suggestions.
  20. I have none of Cannonball's records except the one with Trane and the Davis rhythm section. I'll probably regret this sooner or later. The early sixties discs I previewed through the internet didn't do much for me at the time. Would this be a good place to start correcting my neglect of Adderley's discography?
  21. Which versions do you have? The Maiden Voyage SHM is certainly an improvement on the BN Works. Generally very dynamic, and the horns are much better defined, better detail on the drums as well. Very pleasant on the ears. Impressive. I have only the RVG... I do not keep more than 1 version of any cd I have... don't have the space... I have the RVG because I thought it was better than any prior version... yet still not without problems.... have you compared the SHM to the RVG? I got rid of the RVG after I bought the BN Works. I got hold of the eighties McMaster by accident. (An Amazon marketplace seller send me Maiden Voyage inside the case of the McMaster of Empyrean Isles. I got to keep both.) Of the three the BN Works had my preference.
  22. Which versions do you have? The Maiden Voyage SHM is certainly an improvement on the BN Works. Generally very dynamic, and the horns are much better defined, better detail on the drums as well. Very pleasant on the ears. Impressive.
