  1. Pppfff, first time that i feel a bit nervous, haha.
  2. It's been raining non-stop for two days here and the sun is nowhere to be seen. Feels more like fall, then like summer, bbrrr.
  3. Muhal Richard Abrams - Young at Heart / Wise in Times [1969, Delmark]
  4. Muhal Richard Abrams - Young at Heart / Wise in Time [1969, Delmark] Very happy with this find in the local record shop, as this is usual not the kind of Jazz (i.e. Blue Note/Impulse/Atlantic etc reissues) they have in stock.
  5. The Penguin guide is also a good recommendation, but it seems pretty hard too find indeed for an affordable amount. I did order the "As serious as you life", so I just start with that. Babysteps, babysteps, but even they will get you were you want to be eventualy.
  6. Wow, thanks for all the information and tips, this is really more than I could hope for!! Seems I have a lot of reading/studying to do in the comings months/years (which I don't mind at all). And as for Clifford Thornton's last advice (talk to musicians of an older generation), I'm planning to attend more live gigs starting after the summer. Unfortunately most (if not almost all) of my friends are still completely dedicated to NY/Chicago/Detroit techno/house/disco, so it's hard to get anyone of them to a 100% Jazz gig, but I'm at that phase in life (I'm 34) that I don't really care anymore and just will go by myself more often. I don't live too far from Amsterdam where there are often nice shows at the Bimhuis, so when the financial funds permit it I'm planning to go there whenever I can.
  7. Maybe not quite the right topic to ask this question (as it is not about album releases), but I'm guessing I have the best chance of getting a good answer here; I'm relatively "new" to the whole avant gare jazz scene, and so I wanted to educate myself somewhat on the history/culture/sociopolitical aspects of this music. I was browsing the internet for some good books and/or articles to read, and came up with two books which seems interesting to me: George E.Lewis - A Power Stronger Than Itself William Parker - Conversations (a book consisting of interviews Parker did with many musicians) Are these good books for a "beginner", of are there better books to read. I would also love some tips/links to interesting articles that I can read online.
  8. Part two of Javier Marias - Your Face Tomorrow / Dance and Dream It's been some time since I enjoyed a contemporary writer as much as I do with Javier Marias' trilogy. Very beautiful and intelligently written novel.
  9. Nicole Mitchell's Sonic Projections - The Secret Escapades of Velvet Anderson [2014, Rogue Art] Broetzmann /Adasiewicz / Edwards / Noble - Mental Shake [2014,OTOroku] Undivided - Moves Between Clouds [2011, Multikulti] Hera - Where My Comple Beloved is [2011, Multikulti] Hera with Hamid Drake - Seven Lines [2013, Multikulti]
  10. I would be interested to hear how this show was! I love the playing of Mario Pavone, and have the Streets Songs album high on my wish list.
  11. Yeah I also noticed the new Nicole Mitchell and Tarbaby albums! They are both available at Squidco, so I'm planning to grab them soon.
  12. I'm definitely not a hardcore soccer fan, but I do like big tournaments like this. And in the neighborhood my wife and I just recently moved into, it's impossible to escape the Dutch "orange fever" as all the streets have turned into this:
  13. Beautiful book!! I don't know how well know Louis Couperus is outside of the Netherlands, but this is really well worth the read if you like classic literature. Now starting with: Didn't really know the writer, but I read it is one of the favorite contemporary writers of Orhan Pamuk (which is my favorite contemporary writer). So a nice reason to explore some of his work.
  14. Also wanted to buy the new Angles 9 album on Clean Feed, but that one had to wait a bit longer.
  15. I have Serendipity (actually the only Perelman album I have), and love that one. That album triggered me, to also try the Book of Sound album.
  16. Thanks for the input! I think I will pull the trigger on this one eventually this year, but my next order will be the new Tamarindo, Angles 9 and Perelman/Shipp/Parker (Book of Sound) album.
  17. I heard samples on YouTube of the Angles 9 CD/LP and it sounds great. I'm intrigued by the Cene Resnik release - not familiar with him. Yeah, for me both the Tamarindo and new Angles 9 albums will be sure picks. I still play the Angles - Epileptical West album on regular basis. On another note: has anyone heard the new Matthew Shipp Trio album in full yet (Root of Things)? I'm still hesitating on this one.
  18. Finaly decided to read something from one of our (the Netherlands) most famous writers: Louis Couperus - De stille kracht (The hidden force)
  19. My copy finally arrived yesterday, and it's as good as I hoped it to be! It's always hard to tell after only one good listen, but I think this is my favorite Eric Revis album yet. More composed than his Paralax and City of Assylum albums, this album just bursts with energy and joy. And as Xybert also said, the Darius Jones/Bill McHenry tandem is really great.

    J.D. Allen

I'n not familiar with J.D. Allen, but an album with Orrin Evans on it is always worth checking out! It personally think the album art itself isn't that bad, but the typography (and unfortunately you see it too often) kind of ruins it for me, by using such a cheap and uninspiring looking font.
