  1. I like Honesty from 1983. Mellow, more toward Al Green than Superfly, but definitely Curtis.
  2. Yes a good read and certainly has enhanced my appreciation of the lady's music. I did procure the available Classics mp3s that I didn't already have, so I'm down to those 5 tracks that are on 1944 but not The Asch Recordings to take me up to 1954.
  3. My absolute favorite among Cash songs, because it came out when I was very young and rebellious and dug the hell out of an older guy respecting and standing up for a youthful point of view. I bought a 3 CD set mainly to get at that one song.

The well has been mostly dry since the late 70s. Reissue availability is quite a bit better than it was then. And the exceptions to the rule would make for a fine weekend of listening at least - 80s Andrew Hill, Greg Osby, Mark Shim, Kurt Elling, Particia Barber, Javon Jackson, Dianne Reeves ... Stefon Harris, Jason Moran ...
  5. Honestly, I think if you paid Chuck Nessa minimum wage to answer your question, he couldn't answer your question for less than $100. Many of the Chonological Classics are out of print and commanding hefty prices. From Half.com: 1930, Vol. 2 Duke Ellington CD, 1996 $171.22 1945-1946 Duke Ellington CD, 1998 $91.49 1935-1936 Duke Ellington CD, 1996 $50.69 1938 Vol. 3 Duke Ellington CD, 1996 $58.08 1924-1927 Duke Ellington CD, 1996 $59.85 1931-1932 Duke Ellington CD, 1996 $62.49 1945 Duke Ellington CD, 1997 $63.15 1935-1936 Duke Ellington CD, 1996 $64.64 1941 Duke Ellington CD $65.14 1938 Duke Ellington CD, 1996 $74.37 1939 Vol. 2 Duke Ellington CD, 1998 $84.09
  6. I'm not sure of the technical compliance of Chonological Classics with US copyright law when sold in the US either, but that's not a problem for me either. I consider the stopgap extension of copyright protection to protect Disney interests to be a theft from the people of the USA. I hope european leaders continue to resist the pressure to pass a similar measure.
  7. If you put on one of these CDs and you think it sounds mediocre, then you don't love Duke. Yes, true audiophiles can recognize a fraction of a percent of increased pleasure by spending a lifetime and a fortune hunting down alternate issues, but the great, great music is here.
  8. This thread prompted me to discover that Concord's site is now selling MP3s of John Dennis - New Jazz Expressions, which is excerpted on this anthology. I think I'll grab them in a couple weeks.
  9. Chuck posted twice and didn't mention Roscoe Mitchell??? Leo Smith - Kulture Jazz Michael Howell - Alone (kickin acoustic guitar version of McCoy Tyner's Sama Layuca) and yeah there's hundreds of worth solo piano sets. One favorite is Roland Hanna - Perugia McCoy Tyner - Echoes of a Friend
  10. Evan Parker Lines Burnt in Light, Chicago Solo, Monoceros Leroy Jenkins Solo Concert Walt Dickerson - Shades of Love Jay Hoggard - Solo Vibraphone (India Navigation) Ralph Towner Solo Concert Keith Jarrett - Solo Concerts Bremen Lausanne And, even though I'm still wrestling with it some Peter Kowald - Was Da Ist
  11. Here's an alternative, seems to be complete studio recordings through 1947: Dukle Ellingon 1924-1947 40 cd box I'll be supplementing it with the post 1947 CCs from eMusic.
  12. There are 5 tracks on 1944 that aren't on The Asch Recordings. The Asch Recordings has a single alternate take which is not on the Chronological Classics series. 13. With the appearance of Chronological Classics mp3s on Amazon and eMusic I'm figuring out a strategy to get most of the Mary Lou that has been issued on that label. I already own The Asch Recordings (great) and will be trying not to overlap. There are 7 Mary Lou volumes on CC: 1927-1940, 1944, 1944-1945, 1945-1947, 1949-1951, 1951-1953 and 1953-1954. Emusic has 3-6, Amazon has 1 and 3-6. #2 has been spotted only on Half.com for 192.70, hope it's all on the Asch set. I do own one volume on CD, can't remember which at the moment, I'll look that up when I get home.
  14. Only the risk of actually winning the auction.
  15. I've got some downloads to burn before cutting back my eMusic subscription, so I'd be interested in hearing some top 10 Sony (any genre) and top in print obscurities. I'll throw out a top ten to get things rolling 1. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue 2. Bruce Springsteen - The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle. (The first three albums are very close) 3. Robert Johnson - Complete Recordings 4. The Clash - London Calling 5. Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks 6. Kate Bush - Aerial 7. Weather Report - Mysterious Traveller 8. Santana - Lotus 9. Sly and the Family Stone - Greatest Hits 10. Earth Wind and Fire- All 'n' All In Print Obscurity - Jeff Tain Watts - Citizen Tain Of course the bottom twelve million are any disk that went out intentionally infected with Sony's infamous Rootkit computer trojan.
  16. When you fall below 12, you use up your remaining downloads on tracks from an album you want to complete next month and are seemingly not penalized for completing the purchase in the following month. Or you find some BIS classical, (or other track pricing holdouts) for now.
  17. Ugh. I'm staying, but I'll soon downgrade to the minimum plan. If they plop the DIW catalog out there post haste, I may remain at the current plan. If they apply album pricing to Chronological Classics where I really want it, I may remain on current plan. But they made lots of things worse and not very many better. I hope it's better for the artists and indie labels. It's not for me. Only the ability to redownload past downloads justifies remaining at all. Naxos was a happy hunting ground before album pricing, now it's overpriced. I gues I should grab all the BIS classical I can while it's still track priced.
  18. I recommend you get a separate enclosure and put an internal hard drive in it. The externals have a high failure rate and the failures are in the enclosure, not the hard drive. This saves you a later choice of whether to void the warranty in an effort to save the data. We have used three different brand names and have had failures in each (Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor).
  19. Barbara Dennerlein Duo - 10th anniversary concert Bill Heid - Asian Persuasion (first 7 tracks, awaiting refresh)
  20. Ther original albums from Talking Book through Songs In the Key of Life are absolutely essential. You do need That Girl and Do I Do which are compilation only tracks, so if this has both, then maybe a good way to go, but first time buyers are advised to get Innervisions, Talking Book, Songs in the Key of Life and Fulfillingness First Finale in that order, then supplement with Original Musiquarium or Song Review. Right now I'm not sure what the best option to get the early songs like Signed Sealed and Delivered is.
  21. Umm, a guy named John Lennon fits in there somewhere. No dis to Michael to note that Lennon's legacy was larger in both scope and volume. Let's not undervalue Quincy Jones contribution to Jackson's adult period. But make no mistake, a great and tortured soul has passed.
  22. Picked up 10th Anniversary: It's Magic from eMusic and I am very impressed. Wailin', not particularly reminiscent of either Jimmy Smith or Larry Young. Some rock went into it, but definitely not rock. Not too many organ duos out there.
  23. I am quite willing to trash the title as sensationalist and unnecessarily accusitive. Anything with a timeless quality that is preserved at all is not destroyed. One of these days I may or may not read the book. The Beatles did not destroy Rock 'n Roll. Neither did the Seeds, the Monkees or even the Archies. Interesting that rock 'n roll does not figure in the chapter subjects until chapter 13 of 17.
  24. I just put on a 1991 date with Mal Waldron this morning, beautiful and on a level with the Mal Waldron - Marion Brown duets. Wonder if the daughter from the US was Monday Michiru? Thanks for the music.
  25. Enja too, and some of the remastered Fantasy's.
