Someone at the Keyboard Mag forum posted these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPycu5JVcNI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmWLAt_KSYE Very cool! I sent them to Danny Gottlieb and he remembered the gig but didn't recall there being any video. He was excited to see the performances again after so many years.

The Tonight from Steve Allen, Jack Paar to Jay Leno.
Jim Alfredson replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I saw it on the multiple widescreen flat panel LCD TVs that were on all night during Root Doctor's show at the Green Door (gotta love bars that don't give a fuck if a live band is playing and keep the TV's on even though NOBODY is watching... well, except for me when I got bored... maybe that's why they leave them on?) Anyway... it was Anthony Wilson. I couldn't hear the audio but it looked remarkably somber and I was afraid the drummer was going to nod off. I'm not sure what the fascination is with Krall. I have some of her records... they are nice. She's pretty enough. But Dave looked like he was going to cream his pants after the song. Maybe she's one of those women that, in person, just has that "thing", you know? -
To continue the thought about McGriff, I'm referring to those later Solid State sides that are predominately funky. I don't know the names of them, but they have tunes on there like "Fat Cakes" and "Blue Juice". The organ sounds much more... for lack of a better term... "mean" on those sides than on the previous albums like "A Bag Full Of Blues". The percussion is insane. Also... something I've been trying to figure out for a couple of years... how did John Patton get that gritty percussion sound on "Dirty Fingers"?
-
I had a hunch that RVG used a direct signal from the organ for a lot of those records. Is this verifiable? McGriff had to have done something to his organ. The percussion sounds like no other organ I've heard. Even if it was the simple resistor mod to un-do the volume drop when the percussion is on normal volume... he had to have done something. I've never heard another organ sound like that. I love the sound of the old field coil Leslies. I have a 21H that sounds gorgeous (with a nice quartet of NOS Tung Sols).

I'll look into it. -
Wow and flutter could be caused by the mechanism of the cassette itself. Those little pads that hold the tape against the heads in the cassette disintegrate and thus you don't have enough pressure to hold the tape against the heads correctly. Transferring the actual tape to a new cassette housing can solve the problem.

Groovadelphia back in stock!
Jim Alfredson replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Yes, it did sell out and rather quickly compared to our last releases. Not too bad! We have another 1000 copies printed up and we're ready to ship one to your door! -
Get your copy today either direct from Big O Records (click!), CDBaby (click!), or Amazon (click)! It's also available on iTunes! "...it's a beautiful record, a big advance over the previous two... Everything is so knit together, musically and as a recording job, and every track has several levels (at least) working at once -- hooks (or near hooks), rhythmic, timbral, and harmonic subtleties, etc. [Jim Alfredson is] a genius at registration... Joe is so damn hip but always in there, never flashy, and Randy is always thinking and feeling and sensing, always right." ~ Larry Kart, esteemed jazz critic and former writer for Downbeat Downbeat - Dec. 2008 Hammond organ trios are prone to some unfortunate expectations about rhythmic grooves and anti-climactic jams, but organissimo is out to prove the detractors wrong. Drawing on blues, Latin jazz, and even the repertoire of the drummer's father, tenor saxophonist Arno Marsh ("My Sweet Potato Pie"), the group's [third] effort makes good on the titular promise of a groove. But that's only part of the equation. Groovadelphia boasts a cerebral arc that moves away from the dance floor and into a series of gracefully phrased tunes, including the delicate, drumless ballad "Traces". With a strong emphasis on the different possibilities created by Latin rhythms and organist Jim Alfredson's innovative and bluesy approach to the '60s soul-jazz organ trio concept, the material is thoughtful without being too earnest; danceable, but never repetitive. The Lansing, Michigan based group opens with the title track's playful jam, easing its way into a carefree series of vamps that showcase the big sound a small lineup can get with a Moog, Fender [Rhodes] and Hammond in its midst. Once the foundation's been set, "Senor Buffet" introduces the first of many Latin-based rhythmic structures, followed by a blues shuffle that extends on the relaxed groove idea. ~ Jennifer Odell Many associate the modern-day organ trio solely with Medeski, Martin & Wood, but to do so means leaving out part of the picture. organissimo doesn't aim for the same kinds of funk experiment as MMW, moving instead towards a laid-back, soulful appeal. Groovadelphia signals the full range of possibilities within this musical arrangement, and fans will doubtlessly be returning to organissimo for years to come. ~ Jay Deshpande - All About Jazz

Some Cops Where Sangrey Lives SUCK
Jim Alfredson replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Reminds me of when I got the call that my wife needed to be taken to the ER after a routine doctor check-up (some of you may remember that incident). I had Zora with me and we were having lunch when I got the call. I split as fast as I could and was going 60mph in numerous 25mph zones to get to the hospital. Cop starts chasing me with his lights on. I keep going and get to the hospital. I start getting Zora out of the car (who's only 6 months old at this point) and he's giving me a bunch of shit. I say, "Look buddy, my wife is in there and there's something horribly wrong with her and I don't know what it is. Here's my license, my insurance and my registration." And I just ran into the hospital. After I found out that everything was okay, he came looking for me and was totally pissed off. But he didn't write me a ticket. -
Yep. Gonna start tracking probably in May.

Is this a bootleg release of Sonny Rollins in Stuttgart?
Jim Alfredson replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Re-issues
I don't mind discussion of bootlegs, just no trading or direct links to them. I do mind discussions of mp3s and sites like that. -
This is too good to bury in the Youtube thread

I think it proves that the sampling laws are obstacles to some really creative and interesting shit. I don't understand why the existence of this type of music threatens any other form? -
In celebration of such an awesome entry, I have added the ultimate emoticon to our library:
