I'm just waiting until midnight to give her another dose of Tylenol 3. At around 11:15am this morning Zora and I were in my basement studio jammin' (me on organ, she on drums) when she decided she was tired of playing and went to spin around in my computer chair. I kept playing organ, only to look up mere seconds later to her launching herself off the computer chair, which rolled out from under her, causing her to lose her balance and she hit the floor on one hand. The floor is a thin layer of carpet, no padding, and then concrete. I knew she had really hurt herself instantly. I felt her arm, which she wasn't moving, and it was like a wet noodle. I took her upstairs, cut open her shirt to get a better look, almost lost it (had to breath deep a few times to catch myself), got some ice, called my wife and told her to come home now (I didn't have a car with a car seat in it). We drove to the ER and just got home around 10pm. The doctor had to do surgery, putting three pins in, and she has a big cast on her entire left arm. My poor little 3 1/2 year old sweetie. I think I can feel my hair turning grey. I'm sure those of you with children have experienced something like this, but it was my first time. One of the worst moments of my adult life, for sure.

Not true. All you'd have to do is play a new melody over the changes. The changes could be exactly like the ones on the record, right down to the rhythm and it wouldn't matter. As long as you put a different melody over the top, it is considered a new composition. You can only copyright words and melodies, not chord changes. But I still stick to the fact that nobody cares. Just put it up there. It's not like Freddie Hubbard is going to find it and say "WHAT THE FUCK!?!? WHERE'S MY 50 CENTS!!!"

Nobody listens to or cares about jazz. Don't worry about it.

general thread of BapTizum bitching
Jim Alfredson replied to baptizum's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
baptizum, you seem like a cool guy. Upon entering any well established place on the internet, you have to assume that the "regulars" will take umbrage with the new guy strutting around like he knows everything. I hope you stick around; there is a lot to learn here. But this thread is a bit of a waste. Sorry. -
The Turbanator is still based in Ft. Lauderdale. Like Joe, I want to hear a big band version of "Move Your Hand" with Paul singing the lead vocal!

Interesting article about the "Radiohead experiment": http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9811013-7...?tag=nefd.pulse

Yes, I'm pretty sure he did at one of the universities down there. For a long time, too.

I'm the organist, yes. Member Joe G (Joe Gloss) is the guitarist, and member randissimo (Randy Marsh) is the drummer. I appreciate the iTunes purchase. We used to have a distribution deal with a company that supplied CDs to CDUniverse, Amazon.com and others but we never saw a cent from them and now they are basically in bankruptcy. There's $2000 we'll never see. PM me your address and I'll send you a real disc. I've got enough of them lying around. Maybe Radiohead has the right idea; offer the "basic" product (ie, the music) free and then offer a physical alternative that is much cooler than just a standard CD in the jewel case.

Didn't Nat Adderly teach down there for a long time?

There are legal channels for exposure. For instance, we have tens of thousands of views of our videos that are on YouTube, which I posted there. Those are there with my permission. I did not give my permission to have any of my CDs (organissimo or Root Doctor) on the torrents or usenet or whatever. However, taping live shows and trading those is fine. But of course people do not respect the wishes of the artists, even people who claim to be "fans". If they can get it for nothing, they do. There are still those, like yourself, that enjoy the tactile experience of a physical product and there always will be, but I see those numbers dwindling with each passing generation of kids that grow up in our increasinly digital world. What it does is force musicians like myself to do things cheaper, so we're not stuck with 1,000 discs. If we were a shit band that nobody liked and we had 1,000 discs, I would understand. But we're not; people dig us. We should be selling CDs at a decent clip. But we sell far more downloads (legally, through iTunes) than CDs these days and that's just the way the wind is blowing. What's better than buying mp3s? Downloading them for free! So now I'm thinking about how I can still make records (because I love making records) but not lose my ass financially. All of our CDs have been recorded at a professional studio here in town with a top-notch, world class engineer at the helm and gear that costs more than most people's homes and cars put together. I love working with him, but we can't afford to anymore. More and more musicians are trying the "home studio" thing to save money and that's going to directly affect the quality of the product while at the same time putting world-class engineers like my friend out of business. Like Jsngry said, it affects the entire food chain. I'm also thinking the next release will be on CD-R, printed up myself. Why press a bunch of CDs when all you need them for is to send to radio? People don't buy them, so why pay for them? In a month or less all the music is going to be on the internet for free anyway. Nobody has the answers, but the mere fact is that if an artist does not consent to having his/her material on the internet for free, then that should be respected. Of course, a lot of things "should" happen in this world and they don't, so boo-hoo.

The thing is that illegal downloading is not going away. I'm doing my best to try to work around that and not against it, since there is nothing to be done. I agree that this place can be way too "boys club"-ish.

I hope the responses will cause you to leave. Best wishes for a troubled future. I'd rather he stick around and learn that there's more to the story than just "promoting" a band.

Welcome to the world of "sharing". In the last 6 months I have discovered about a dozen "blogs" offering my stuff. When I object I get very negative crap back. Yep. Not much you can do about it. My only hope is that the people will like the music and come to a show if we ever play in their town. Then again, that would require spending money to support an artist, which they don't seem to care about. It's only about "me and mine".

The new Root Doctor CD is already on the torrents. It took us nine months of hard work and over $12k of our own money to make and some asshole (most likely a DJ since we haven't sold that many yet) has ripped it off for everyone! Yay! It's easy to say it's okay when it's not your livelihood.

The policy is that we do not allow active trading of copyrighted material, such as trading CD-Rs, mp3s, and such.

So... what's up with the Lions? Conn, I am concerned about you. You need to take off the tinfoil hat and come see an organissimo show! -
Cell phone jammers

Gotta side with Dan on that one. The guy is a vigilante that intimidates people. No hero. -
I'll take the Lonnie. HEEEEYYYYY!

Yes, thank you Mark. You do great work! It was really nice to see you again, too. It's been too long.

Cell phone jammers

If it is illegal, how could they? I've been in buildings that are the same way (most of UofM's campus!) and I always figured they had jammers, but the article says they are illegal. -

Call me crazy, but I think it should be legal for a business to have a jammer that operates within the confines of their business. The airwaves are supposedly "public property" right? If they don't want the airwaves in their business being used for that purpose, then they should have that right. -

Talk about lowering your expectations. Criminey! It's hard not to like the Packers and it's great to see Favre having a "comeback" year of sorts, but as a Lions fan, I was really hoping the Broncos would pull that one out. As soon as it went into overtime and the Packers won the toss, however, I knew it was over. Favre wasn't going to let that one slip away. -
That's some wild vibrato. Holy smokes!
