Side note on PC CD drives: I bought a Plextor back when I put together my office machine in 2001. The damn thing is still rockin' hard. Yeah, it's kind of slow as far as burners are concerned today (only 12X) but man, it just keeps going. I've gone through several Lite-Ons and Sonys on other machines in the time I've had that Plextor. Regarding the disc, I would use EAC (Exact Audio Copy) to rip the CD to your harddrive and then burn multiple safety copies. Sounds like the disc might be starting to go.

Well, not really. All the organists that recorded for Blue Note starting when RVG moved from Hackensack to Englewood Cliffs played on Rudy's C3. When you think about that, and think about the wide range of timbres and the personal sound they each got out of the instrument, it becomes apparent that in the end the instrument doesn't really matter. That said, the Hammond B3 (and it's brethren) are remarkably well-made machines and if they are taken care of they will last forever.

Yeah, I know. It's one of those things on my to-do list... That's the downfall of being a completely self-taught musician, I suppose. Bob Evans used to be my favorite restaurant as a kid... I'm not joking. I loved the sausage. Now that you can buy it at the store, I have no reason to go to the restaurant and I can't remember the last time I was in one. Funny story: For years my wife and I had a newspaper clipping from the anniversaries section of this couple in Lansing that had been married 50 years. We kept the clipping because it said they celebrated their milestone by going to Bob Evans. WOOOOOOO!!!

So I can't read music worth a pile of beans, but I wrote some horn parts for the upcoming Root Doctor release. Last time we did this the horn players we hired charted my parts out themselves. This time I need to do it, which isn't a big deal since I arranged the horn parts in Cubase via MIDI and Cubase has a pretty handy score editor. Anyway, here's my basic question for those in the know (FFA, I'm looking your way!) Baritone: I'm assuming bass clef? I know tenor is Bb... what is baritone? Tenor: Bb - treble clef, right? Trombone: no idea Alto: I used to play alto, but I forget what it is... Eb? Trumpet: Have no idea... treble clef, right? Thanks! ----Jim

I think in general Gabriel's first solo record is over-produced. There are some great songs on there, including Solsbury Hill, but the production is just over the top. I'm glad he switched producers when he did.

I'm in the process of changing all my light bulbs over to the new high efficiency ones, as the old ones burn out. I like them a lot. The equivalent of a 60W bulb only draws 15W of power. That's incredible! Well worth the extra money they cost, imo. And they are guaranteed to last 5 years (some 7 years).

I wish I could see the rulebook where it says jazz musicians have to be gracious and unassuming. Seems to be a common complaint among people here lately (remember the Zawinul thread?)

Sorry, back to more pressing issues. Are Chauncey and 'Sheed wearing Pistons uniforms next year? As much as I love Billups, I would not overpay him. If a situation came up like with Ben Wallace last year, I'd say let him go. As for 'Sheed... I love him, too... but his style of play is quickly becoming antiquated in this league (which is unfortunate, I think). It doesn't matter because I hereby predict that the Cavs will win the championship next year! Stern will make it so!
