Pictures Of Bad Ass Hammond Organs
Jim Alfredson replied to Soulstation1's topic in General Discussion
Let me know if you do, 'cos I'd be interested in making it sound better. -
That means you and Randy would have to come along. I want all the glory for myself.

Need an organist?

Sport: 2007 NBA Play-Offs Pool
Jim Alfredson replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I only watched a few minutes of the game before halftime due to being knee-deep in a home project, but I could tell just in that brief view that the Pistons would lose the game. No energy, no ball movement, sloppy play, one on one basketball. They just were not in it today. Hopefully they'll close it out on Tuesday back in Detroit. -
Yes.

1965 Downbeat Reader's Poll Best Organist
Jim Alfredson replied to Soul Stream's topic in General Discussion
And another thing: I don't see a problem with the majority voting for Jimmy Smith. In 1965, he was at the peak of his powers and putting out great records. -

Everybody not voting for Smith was a cool cat back then! p.s. Clare Fischer is a very good organist IMHO - he's pretty off mainstream as far as his registrations etc. are concerned. I still have to get me a copy of So Danco Samba, but his playing on Manteca and the Tjader LPs is very hip. Clare Fischer is not an organist. He's a pianist that played organ here and there. Big difference. -

No Lonnie Smith? -
Ah yes, Zora The Beaver!

They've been warning about it for months.

Jim, How long a go was this? I met Larry's son Larry III (nickname: Tyrone!) in September, and he said he had the organ. Bertrand. It was back in 2000 or 2001 I think. Maybe his brother gave it to his son.

We don't allow public trading of CDr's on this board.

I have the full version of AVG on this computer (my office machine) and the free version on every other. I do not care for it's spam filtering and the way it interfaces with Outlook, but other than that, it's great. And it does the same thing as Zone Alarm's firewall (ie, ask you whether a service can connect to the internet or not).

Larry Young's brother has his. A friend of mine visited Larry's widow in Newark and talked to her and she said Larry's brother has the organ.

The Live At Paul's Mall was the first Groove and the first McGriff I ever heard. My dad had that record (now it's mine!) and I probably played Brown Bread so many times the damn record nearly fell apart. I have a sealed copy that I got off ebay as well as that original one of my dad's. One of the guitarists on the record is Leon Cook, who sadly just passed away a few years ago. He lived in Toledo and I had the pleasure of playing with him in 2001 or 2002 at the now out-of-business Rusty's in Toledo. A very soulful player (played like Wes, all thumb), great musician, and extremely beautiful human being. His son Damon is an excellant drummer in Toledo.

Allen, that would be awesome.

It seems to me Bowen is looking at the ball (his head is up) the entire time. If he was purposely going for Amare's heel, then he'd be looking down, no? -
Tom, seriously... don't put McAfee back on your machine. It's a resource hog as well. Are you looking for anti-virus or firewall?

I couldn't watch the first half due to a gig, but I got home just in time for halftime and saw the box score. I said out loud, "What the hell?" Then I read that the Pistons only had one trip to the line in the entire 1st half. Uh... The third quarter was a thing of beauty, however. The Bulls are done. They'll be lucky if they don't get swept. -
I hate to do this, but I edited some things in this thread. One of these days I'd like the band to play this festival and unfortunately I always have to worry whether people (in general) can distinguish the band from the forum. Past experience tells me that they often times cannot. I apologize.

If you were on South Park...

Oh man... that is funny shit! Thanks, Aggie! -
I think it does everything these days, which is why it is so bloated. The Windows firewall does a good job. If you have a router (wireless or otherwise), it's built-in firewall will just as good or better as Zone Alarm. All you really need is a good anti-virus program and perhaps some spyware removal. AVG covers the first and Lavasoft Ad-Aware is great for the latter. Both come in free versions.

I can't imagine not doing anything to the tone generator, as most organs that have been not re-capped are so uneven in tone across the manuals that it is just laughable. The big bag from Goff did well by me. If you listen to any of the recordings on myspace, or anything from our CDs, that is all my '58 B3 with the new caps in it. It is nice a punchy and bright with lots of definition. I used to get comments all the time about that rig. "How did you make it sound like that?" As for cleaning the bus bars, I learned a really cool trick from a local tech (who is a genius when it comes to Hammonds and taught me everything I know about repairing them). You don't even need to take the manuals out to do this. Obviously, unscrew the large bolts that hold the manuals in place from the bottom and all other screws from the wooden rail up top and the like. Basically get it so the manuals move freely. Then unsolder 20 or so tone generator / key connections on the back of the manuals (the black wires) starting from the center and fanning out both sides (ie, 10 per "side" starting in the middle). You'll probably end up doing more, but that should get it started. Then have a friend help you put the organ on it's side. If you are looking at the organ from the front (like you're playing it), the organ needs to be on it's right side, so the reverse keys are sticking up in the air. I think... damn, it's been 10 years since I did a buss-bar job! Well, whatever side the little metal plate that closes over the buss bars is on... that's the side you want up in the air (obviously). Then pull the manuals out like the pages of a book. If they can't come out far enough, unsolder more wires on the back. Using this method you don't have to unsolder all the connections and you don't have to take the manuals out of the case, which is nice if there is no need to do either. A little bit OT: I've never cared for the TrekII percussion, although I have it in three older Hammonds that I own. It's never sounded right to me... perhaps it is a function of being solid-state vs. tube? It's works in a pinch, but there's something about it that has always bothered me. -
Screw Zone-Alarm. Download AVG from Grisoft. Best free anti-virus software out there. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390#avg-anti-virus-free
