An orgy in rhythm?

Because they've been played to death? I mean, I'm sure Papa John plays the hell out of them and Organissimo plays those tunes live sometimes but I would never record them unless I figured out a way to totally re-arrange them. Why? Well, how can you improve on Jimmy's version of The Cat? How many people have covered Milestones? I'm not saying people shouldn't do these tunes anymore but in my opinion this is one of the problems with jazz today... too much focus on the old by both the artists and the listeners. Yes, it is good to have a strong foundation in the tradition of the music but there comes a time when you have to forge ahead and try to do something that's yours. I'm really not attacking anyone here. I'm just stating an opinion. I realize that one of the critiques of the organsisimo record revolved around the strength of the compositions but in my mind I'd rather take chances with original compositions and fail than re-hash the same tired standards over and over again. Just my opinion and again I'm in no way bashing any artist or listener.

So, what is better, Direct TV or the Dish????

Here's my question: In these days of consumer choice that we're living in, why doesn't a cable company offer fully customized service? In other words, why can't you pay for just the channels that you want each month? Why do my wife and I, with basic cable, have to pay for TWO NBC channels, TWO CBS channels, TWO ABC channels, about FOUR UPN channels, a bunch of boring ass local community channels that no one in their right mind watches and stupid crap like the golf channel and we don't even get something cool like TLC or Discovery for our $30 a month? Bullshit. -
I watched Raiders last night over at a friend's house. There are a couple of extra shots I think but nothing that alters the story. The snake pit/cobra effect is cleaned up. That's all I really noticed. Great movie! I never cared for the other two, but Raiders is a classic.

Truly a funny sketch. Another favorite of mine is not from SNL but from Conan O'Brien's show. He was talking about reality shows and had a fake show called something like "Ultimate Survivor". The premise was simple: put the members of 80s super group Survivor in a house together and watch what happens. It was hilarious. The first scene is some dude in a leather jacket cooking on the stove and his bandmate behind him drinking a beer. The guy drinking says: "Hey man, remember 'Eye of the Tiger?'" "Yeah man. That was awesome." "Yeah. That was sweet." In the next scene two guys are in a bedroom and one of them is looking in a mirror. The guy looking in the mirror says: "Hey man, you know what shirt this is?" "Yeah! Isn't that the one you wore for the video to "Eye of the Tiger"?" "Yeah man! That was sweet." "Yeah. That was awesome." End of skit. So stupid it's funny. -
Welcome to the board, Claude. I can't help you with Stan Kenton research, but hoepfully someone here can.

That would be way cool. How can we make that happen?

Wow! Get me their number. I have a couple of old Jensen V-21 drivers that are lying around that are blown. The problem with the old Jensens is that they are only 30 watts, so on a live gig you can pop them easily. Supposedly BT Productions makes a driver for around $80 that is 60 or 80 watts and sounds close to the old alnico jensens. The crazy thing is when I'm hearing the Peavey driver live I don't like it, but it seems to record well. It sounds great on the record and on the live DAT from Clearwater. -

It's actually a 147RV. The speaker is still there but the reverb amp and chamber is long gone. My dad traded some piano tunings to a guitarist for the Leslie cabinet. When we got it, it had been wired for guitar and was painted black. My dad refinished it and I restored the internals which included putting a new Hammond/Suzuki 122 amp in it. The Leslie still has some weird Peavey driver in place of the Jensen that the guitarist put in it. It doesn't sound bad, especially live, but after hearing the 21H, it's starting to bug me more and more. Then again, it's what we recorded the album with and it sounds nice so maybe it's dependent on the mic you use on it. I have played through 122RV's before and they are ok. I don't miss the reverb really. Having all your reverb come through a tiny 6x9 speaker from the side isn't all that great. -

The B3 is mine! Joe and I actually drove. They would've provided one, but we had planned on booking more gigs along the way and carrying the B3 anyway so when they asked me if I wanted one I said, "Naw, I'll bring my own". Of course, the gigs on the way thing didn't pan out, but it was too late to tell them to get an organ. But it worked out fine. As far as hearing it, I'm listening to the DAT right now... I'll discuss with the boyz if they want to put it up on the web. -

It was great to meet you as well, Dan! Sorry we didn't hook up on Sunday. I tried Mike's number, but I must've typed it in wrong into my phone as I kept getting some strange older woman! Anyway, we didn't get to meet Herbie. He was pretty elusive and surrounded by security. I did get to meet Eric Alexander, although just for a split second. He and the rest of the band pretty much hid in their trailor the whole time... I was sort of bummed. I wanted to pick Hazeltine's brain. I did get to meet Terri Lynn Carrington after Herbie's show, which was an honor. She is AMAZING!!!! One word summation for her: ferocious!!!! The other cool person we met Sunday was Chick Corea. He lives in Clearwater and came down to see Herbie. The festival head-honcho introduced Joe and I and Chick was very nice. I gave him a copy of the CD and we talked about software synths and such! Again, sorry we didn't get to hang. But Saturday night was the best gig I've done yet and chillin' with you and Mike and the boyz afterwards was just icing on the cake!!!! I'm glad we got to meet face to face! Oh, and thanks for the kind write-up! -
Hey all, Joe G, Randissimo, and I will be heading to Florida tomorrow to appear at the Clearwater Jazz Holiday. Use3D will be around if anything pops up. I don't know if I'll be able to pop in or not but in any case I'll be back Monday night. Have fun! By the way... Dan Gould... did you get my PM?
