I'm off for a vacation!
Christiern replied to Bright Moments's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I heard that you are spending your vacation in Hackensack, NJ--what, other than a great view of NYC, does Hacky (as we call it here) have to offer the vacationing Florida couple? Anyway, have a really great vacation--we expect pictures. -
I think it was a real one. Our set designers were meticulous, they wanted the set to look like a real club--even bought a jukebox and filled it with jazz. It apparently worked, because when the show started airing coast to coast, we began getting cards and letters from all over--people were planning a NYC trip and wanted the address of the club. We weren't even in NYC, we were in Trenton.

I probably was! I quit not long after we finished taping the series.

You either have a tape or a very good memory, Marcello! I recall Jimmy telling me--in the interview--that he does not like the term, "jazz." Many people didn't back then in the air of militancy. I also recall that Jimmy and I were seated at a table and when the camera was looking at Jimmy over my shoulder, his face was seen behind the smoke from my cigarette. Glad I kicked that nasty habit.

manhattan mayhem/crane collapse
Christiern replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Terrible tragedy--imagine if it had happened on a weekday. The totally demolished building in the photo, where parts of the crane landed was a very popular watering hole called Fu Bar. Ironically, FUBAR is a military acronym for Fucked Up Beyond All Repair! -

Glad you are ok. Looked terrible on CNN, that apartment house with the roof totally missing! Incredible. Guess you'll remember this birthday -
It was May 30, 1972 and Bill Evans had to subject himself to yet another interview, check out the guy's outfit! Parts of this is out of synch, but you can always read the subtitles! The intro Part 1 Part 2

Quincy Jones is the one who defines "slick" here, and I don't care if it was his work load (don't believe that one), he let his ego stand in the way of other people's careers--there can be no excuse for that. He was a lousy trumpeter and I am not so sure that his arranging talent is as impressive as many people think. Quincy Jones was an exploiter of other people's creative talent and possessing artistic talent of his own does not make that any less despicable, IMHO.

Nice monitor, Randy--I see that you keep abreast of things. BTW, I had no idea that George and Abe were lovers! -
The first time I had an inkling of Quincy doing that sort of thing was in 1961, when Melba Liston all but told me as much.

My first computer was a TRS-80, but I upgraded to a Apple ][ 28 years ago. -

I'm the only ham here, Chris. Where do you see something that might be a ham radio? -
Since we almost always communicate with each other while seated at our computers, it occurred to me that it would be nice to have a visual to go with it. Therefore, here are photos of my computer spots. Let's see yours... This is my main computer, in a small room that I call the Computorium. ...and this is my "annex" in the adjoining living room.

Rosetta Reitz gave twisted lectures, accompanied by films that were edited in a ridiculous, but characteristic fashion, She would, for example, have someone edit out any shots that showed men! Her claim to fame was that she wrote a book about menopause, but her knowledge of jazz was minimal. She twisted facts to fit into her myopic feminist agenda. She also attempted to push her way into documentary film projects, falsely claiming ownership of material, etc. She once came to see me and told me that she was writing a book on the relationship between Louis and Lil Armstrong. She did not know that I was a personal friend of Lil's and that we were collaborating on her biography, so I asked Reitz to tell me about Lil. I was appalled by what she told me, it was not only pure fabrication, it included a sick description of Louis and Lil having sex! I told her that she should not write such a book, and she left my apartment knowing that she would not again be welcomed. This is/was a very, very undesirable person, IMO. Ironically, one of the albums she released on her bootleg label was a 1961 Ida Cox Riverside session that I produced. I don't know what she did--if anything--to license it, but she had her nefarious ways. Ironic, too, that I once wrote a letter to the Village Voice (which they printed) lauding Stanley Crouch for pointing out how Reitz was an unscrupulous fact twister and exploiter.

I'm glad to see that you agree, Allen. I often wonder how such books get editorial approval, this one was so blatantly twisted, like the crap Rosetta Reitz used to churn out.

Pay? Well, I think that may be a new wrinkle!

what was you dumbest purchase ever?

Whale meat is ok, if wisely prepared. Since I don't ever eat fish, I never liked the fishiness of this meat, but with the right spices... I prefer to eat horse meat, which was an alternative in Iceland, but it, too, has its drawbacks--too sweet, for one thing. Canned whale? No way! How big was the can? -
Let us send good thoughts to all the creative people whose work this man took credit for.

My ex-wife's Corvair--an embarrassing car that I rarely drove, and gave away to a guy who paid the parking tickets it had accumulated for non-use. This isn't it, but it was also white... -
I recommend registering at Photobucket it's free and very effective--I have 300 photos there now, including:

What radio are you listening to right now?
Christiern replied to BillF's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
In 3 days it will be 55 years since Humphrey Lyttleton gave me my very first interview. It was in his London office and I was not only very nervous, I was awful. Loved those early Parlophones, which is why I went to London. An amazing man. -
She's still in your computer Chris. 1) Go to utilities and open Terminal. 2) In terminal type emacs. 3) When the editor has loaded, hold Shift and hit the Escape key. 4) Type xdoctor and hit return. 5) Answer the 1st question and proceed from there. You'll have to hit return twice for each answer you type. 6) When you're done control-x control-c will quit the editor. Pretend you're Mr. Spitzer and that you have some urges. Hell, if Elliot had "talked" to Eliza he'd probably still be gov. Great, we had a nice conversation--it was like old times! Thanks
