  1. I never heard of an "honorary" Pulitzer. Wynton was given a dishonored (or should that be dishonorable?) one for his crap on the fields.
  2. Aah, the good old days--thanks for the story, Larry. Down Beat was nice to work for, because--as you point out--Dan was and still is such great guy. The young lady who worked for him when he was running the New York office (in the Fisk Building, I believe) was also nice, but a piece of work. She knew all the musicians, sometimes more intimately than the job required, and she plunged herself full-body into the protest against TV's neglect of jazz--I bet she can be found on a few feet of Cavett footage. As I recall, Dan previously worked for Metronome. The sometimes hectic pace of New York never affected DB. I recall covering a concert and seeing the album of the concert appear in stores before my review was published!
  3. I covered many concerts and club dates for Down Beat, but they never gave me a pass--just a ticket or name-at-the-door and $15.
  4. To me, they were all significant--some longer than others.
  5. I occasionally read--here and elsewhere--complaints about e-Bay sellers, so I thought it would be nice to tell my fellow posters about a very pleasant one. I have been trying to find fragrance refills for a couple of Oust fans that seem no longer to be supported. A Google found several, but they want $43-49 for an item that was priced at $3.99, when the stores had it. Then, this weekend on e-Bay, I found a batch of 8 for $23, and they were just the fragrance I wanted ("outdoor"), so I ordered and received today. Also in the package was a piece of chocolate--a nice touch, and Mindy gets my recommendation! Tell me about your good online shopping experience(s).
  6. Keep going. Sometimes it helps to get it all out.
  7. How you can get into a hissy fit over nothing is truly amazing. If I "stand corrected" on anything, it is my belief (probably wrong) that the picture is doctored. So? How you can weave that into some kind of anti-right nonsense is beyond me, but this wouldn't be the first time you misinterpreted things. BTW, I never asked you to apologize for calling me all sorts of foul names when you were wrong about the WMDs, did I? Nor should I have--we all have differing opinions and there is nothing wrong with that, but don't start making stuff up just to stir up controversy. I think you need to cool off and re-read this thread, but try to do it with an open mind, and ask yourself why I would in such a devious manner express a disbelief in Heston's past moment of decency. I'm sure he did get involved in the Civil Rights movement--good for him--but that is not going to change the way I feel about his failure to see the need to ban assault weapons on Main Street. Anyone who so blindly supports the NRA lobby is a fool, IMHO, and you underestimate my forthrightness when you start reading hidden messages into my posts. Keep this going, if it gets you off, but I've had enough of your twisted deductions.
  8. Act now and we'll throw in an economy pack of toothpicks.
  9. If I had doubts about Heston participating positively in the Civil Rights movement, I would have said so--why on earth should I suddenly start posting innuendos? Besides, to me, the photo looked doctored and that conclusion was drawn without regard to who it depicts. What's with the paranoia? I expect that from Dan, but Moose????
  10. Tenor saxophonist Phil Urso passed earlier today (April 7). He was born in 1925. Details to come. Here's what AMG says about Urso's career. Subtlety and restraint defined the playing of Phil Urso, a member of the 1950s' cool school who owed a strong artistic debt to Lester "Pres" Young but never came across as a clone of him. Urso started out on clarinet, but the tenor sax became his primary instrument after he studied it in high school. Though not that well-known, Urso was a solid and expressive jazzman who played with Woody Herman, Jimmy Dorsey, Miles Davis, Terry Gibbs, Oscar Pettiford, and others in the 1950s. In 1954, he co-led a quintet with trombonist Bob Brookmeyer that recorded for Savoy, but Urso's best-known association came in 1955 and 1956, when he was a sideman for Chet Baker. Urso was prominently featured on some of the trumpeter's Pacific Jazz recordings of 1956, which make one wish he had become more visible instead of less so. But after the '50s, very little was heard about Urso on a national level, although he did remain active in the jazz scene of his adopted home of Denver well into the 1990s. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
  11. Sorry, Dan--you are having a bad day, aren't you?--was it Charles Heston who gave you that inside dope on WMDs in pre-Bushed Iraq? I remember him now, he was great in "Bowling for Columbine", and who could ever forget that wonderful NRA "cold dead hands" moment--a keeper, if ever there was one.
  12. Dan Gould: "That's a crock of shit, Chris. You questioned the authenticity of the photograph to cast doubts on Heston's involvement in the Civil Rights movement. 7/4 established that the photo is legit, Porcy noted that Heston's involvement in Civil Rights is being noted in obits. Tell me I'm wrong. Or why don't you explain your purpose in casting doubts on the photos in the first place? Its an incontrovertible fact that Heston worked for Civil Rights in the sixties, if you are aware of that fact, why did you/do you question the authenticity of the photographs?" Oh. so you are a mindreader now? It looks as if you are trying to start some controversy here, but--sorry, Dan--it ain't gonna work. If it makes you happy, you just go on thinking whatever you want.
  13. And what, may I ask, prompted that nonsense, RDK?
  14. Dan Gould: "Where's the apology, Chris? Where is the acknowledgment that you were wrong about Heston's support of the Civil Rights movement?" Apology for what? For saying that the photo looks like a botched PS job? I still think it, and the second one, look doctored. Did I ever say anything about the Civil Rights movement in this thread? Perhaps you ought to apologize for not reading a thread before responding to it and jumping to the wrong conclusions, eh?
  15. Conrad, that photo is obviously a poor Photoshop job. I think anyone with Altzheimers (or any disease, for that matter) is to be wished good health. I lie most of Heston's movies, but I am bothered by anyone's blind support of he NRA.
  16. Well, one less vote for the warmongers.
  17. Grandma Moses with a pick and a kick--I love it, Allen!
  18. DANKE, DANKE, DANKE!!!
  19. Perhaps it had no apeel? Besides, entertainers used to refer to NYC as "The Big Apple," while "the Big Banana" had an entirely different connotation.
  20. Is this annoying thing that today started to pop up at the bottom of each thread something I can get rid of? Did I, perhaps, click on the wrong thing to activate this nightmare? Please tell me that I can make it go away.
  21. Even with all that, Apple doesn't even come close to being as bad as Microsoft. That logo suit is ridiculous, however.
  22. "Lowe lacks the polish of Wynton Marsalis but has more soul." - Downbeat Huh? My old lava lamp had more soul than Gumbolina M.
