Bear in mind that only one company, Apple, markets that platform, as opposed to countless brands of PCs. Furthermore, many of the latter are of poor, cheap quality.

Both program allow you to runWindows and OSX simultaneously—no switching. As for smugness? Well, let's call it a feeling of comfort induced by the Mac's ease of use and reliability. Remember, the Windows platform has its genesis in Microsoft's attempt to make their dreaded DOS Mac-like. They never really succeeded, because Apple was always a few steps ahead. Platform envy, that's all it is.

If it is so good, why are so many users having problems, and switching to the Mac platform? Unfortunately, I am forced to use Windows on my Mac, because the St. Croix Historical Association, for whom I do daily work, only uses PCs and have a problem with Mac databases. Well, Windows runs as smoothly on my Mac (with help of Parallel software) as it would on a PC, but it is very clunky, requires too many steps, and attracts viruses if one goes online with it. I never use Windows for the internet. Some people have not switched to Mac for fear that their investment in PC software may thus be a waste. That, however, is not a problem. Do yourself a favor, think hard about moving up to Mac.

I have had a Mac since they were introduced, 26 years ago, and Apple ][s and ///s before that. I agree with porcy62 that they are, in the end, less expensive. As a matter of fact, there was a time when businesses saved money on training by switching to the intuitive Mac platform.I, too, have never had a virus and I am happy to say that the money I spent on Apple Care has been a waste! These are very reliable machines. Snow Leopard is great, but next year's introduction of Lion promises to be another giant leap. It was Steve Jobs who had the foresight to eliminate floppy disk drives (which he also introduced) and he was severely criticized for it, but it turned out to be an insightful decision. The new, super trim MacBook Air, introduced yesterday, is another innovative design that the PC'ers will soon try to copy.

I have finally licked the sync problem by eliminating YouTube and switching to DivShare (which I have been using for my audio posts), so you will now find the first Jimmy Heath All-Stars upload on my blog, with more to come. I will also be re-posting the Rashied Ali footage in proper sync, but these transfers and conversions are time consuming, so please bear with me. As usual, let me know what you think.

Sorry, still not synced, but I'm trying to figure it out and will repost these clips if I succeed. The suggestion Rostasi linked to simply removed the audio, completely! If anyone has a suggestion, please post it. I have just posted the final number from this particular show, still out of sync and I cannot recall the title, so I hope someone ill name that tune!

Sorry about that! I'm still fumbling my way around YouTube. I just wanted to park the video there and have it accessible from my blog, exclusively. Perhaps that is not possible, but I have changed the options, so please try again. If the usual YouTube link (with the image does not work for you, click on the text link immediately above it (in red). Both work for me, but I have no way of telling if that is because it's mine—you know what I mean. Please post your findings here. If you get through to the video, I would also appreciate a comment. Finally, I don't know what I did wrong to get it out of sync, but I welcome any solution.

I have finally figured out how to transfer and post videos to my blog, so I am starting with a selection from my 1972 TV series, The Jazz Set. It features the Rashied Ali Quartet. Before you go to Stomp Off, please be advised that my transfer technique is a word in progress, so you will find this one to be out of sync—but I'm working on it.

I mis-read the thread header, sorry about that. As for LPs, nobody has mention the "variable groove" process introduced by Columbia in the late 1940s. By varying the space between the grooves, narrowing it during soft passages, they were able to obtain a half hour on a 12" LP side with uniform quality. Before that, as I understand it, everything was "microgroove," which resulted in distortion on loud passages. It was hell on Wagner's stuff.

I recall hearing that fitting Beethoven's Ninth was the criterion.
