  1. Perhaps.... Aldous loved her.
  2. Is this the Laura who inspired your aimless thread?
  3. You might be interested in this.
  4. Thanks for testifying. Hadn't heard that song, but it sound like Sam, and I'll search for it.
  5. Whether you got along with him or not, Chris, shouldn't distract from his importance to this music. Thanks for posting, Bev. You are right, but I never thought much of his music,at least not as it was in the mid-Sixties.
  6. 4 closets, one of which is a walk-in.
  7. That would possibly explain why he was such an irascible fart in the mid Sixties when I had more than my fill of him.
  8. I recall being dismayed in the early sixties when Stanley Dance told me that Decca (mca, probably), in an effort to preserve their jazz archive, was systematically transferring their masters and adding reverb! I heard some of these transfers and there was no presence on them, whatsoever—cavernous.
  9. The article mikeweil links to has led me to this incredible site.. The bad thing about it is that you may end up spending hours, days, listening to thousands of cylinders. The ODJB may not have been as pioneering as believed. The audio quality is amazing. Listen to this version of "Didn't He Ramble" sung by Arthur Collins 106 years ago.
  10. And just as I was planning a pilgrimage to Decca.
  11. It has been years (make that, decades) since I heard Billie Poole. Her singing was not memorable, so I can't tell you anything about it.
  12. Here is a link to Terry Teachout's rememberance.
  13. Hi Joel, sure has been a while
  14. Steve, Dave's son reports that his father has been in the hospital for this past week, having been admitted with a severe urinary tract infection. Fortunately, the infection now seems to be almost completely out of his system, but they discovered a blood clot in his right arm on Wednesday, and he is now on medication (thinners) to dissolve the clot. They also found a lump in his right shoulder area. "It could be no cause for worry," Steve wrote yesterday, "or it could be an indication the cancer has spread (he was diagnosed with lung cancer roughly a year ago). We will know the results of the biopsy in the next day or two." If you wish to lift Dave's spirit, Steve urges you to send him a note or card to: Dave McKenna 285 Pine Grove Rd State College, PA 16801
  15. Wow, Randy, I'm not the only one who goes digging up the old stuff. That was 43 years ago! What can I say, I was an agent of change BTW, it worked, our subscription went up.
  16. Did you know that Alberta Hunter had more foreign policy experience than Palin? Well, this is from a 1940s issue of The Reader's Digest...
  17. The homophobic creep returns. :tdown
  18. It came at a time when I had a very busy schedule. I could have added this to it and I probably should have, but.... Allen, I wouldn't want to be any stripe of Ratliff

    Jimi Hendrix

Found this page from my 1969 appointment calender. The Shep interview was exhausting, the concert was excruciating.
  20. In NYC they not only automatically bag every item, the plastic bags are so thin that they generally have to use two. When supermarkets hit a slow time, it is common to see check-out clerks doubling up their empty bags. Ridiculous waste.
  21. In January, 1954, Leonard Feather brought his Jazz Club USA troupe to Copenhagen. Billie Holiday, Red Norvo, Buddy DeFranco, and others, including pianist Beryl Booker's trio. Beryl's bassist was Bonnie Wetzel and the drummer was Elaine Leighton. I arranged a jam session and we introduced our distinguished visitors to Danish open-faced sandwiches as well as the beer and aquavit that goes with them. It was interesting to see that the women handled aquavit much better than the men, and I didn't see them holding back. I later met Elaine again, when she came (with trumpeter Norma Carson) to entertain the troops in Iceland. Here are Elaine (left) and Bonnie enjoying our hospitality.
  22. Those HP color laser printers do a fine job (with the right paper), but I see the high cartridge cost as a big drawback. It costs me as much to renew the cartridges as it cost me to buy the damned machine!
  23. I have 3 printers in a closet, but the following are hooked up to my Macs: Hewlett-Packard Photosmart 8150 Excellent for printing photos Hewlett Packard PSC 1610 All-In-One Excellent for printing photos and for light scanning Hewlett-Packard Color Laserjet 2550 Excellent for color printing, but far too expensive when it comes to its 4 cartridges (about $80-90 each!) Hewlett-Packard Laserjet 1200 My favorite, the one I have had the longest, the least expensive to run, etc. So, for your needs, I definitely recommend a b&W Laser printer. The Brother were always cheaper, but I think HP has become just as affordable. The current models are far less expensive (start at $99), look better, and probably function better. Check them out here.
  24. I absolutely hate having to remove these ridiculous stickers from fruit—there is often no way of doing so without puncturing the skin.
  25. Did I read "goodbye" in post 14? I join those who wish you wouldn't flip-flop.
