  1. I grabbed this from an interview with Thomas Edison in the NY Times of January 20, 1901. I thought it might be interesting at a time when politicians and elections are so prominently in the news.
  2. As far as I can recall, we had the Riversides and Jazzlands mastered and pressed at the same place (Abbey).
  3. It usually had to do with having a product available at a lower price or geared towards a different market. In the early days, when 78s were all there was, companies like Columbia and Victor had budget labels. Sometimes it was important to maintain whatever prestige the main label had built up. It really had nothing to do with not inundating DJs with a particular label—I don't know where that story came from!
  4. Almost all the labels had their own alleged, patented audio process, but many of them were pure fantasy (Riverside's Judson blurb certainly was), in the tradition of Paramount's "electrically recorded" claims, which aural evidence indicated meant nothing more than that there was an electric bulb lighting the studio. That said, I used to frequent a wonderful opera-oriented restaurant in Philly and vaguely recall seeing on the walls old Victor posters from the 78 rpm period claiming "high fidelity". I looked for something like that online, but in vain.
  5. Install another OS? Guess you are behind the times, all Macs now also run Windows.
  6. So, for once, everything isn't peachy in Atlanta!
  7. How about "Chris Albertson does not want you to give me a Movado watch"
  8. Absolutely, a current Mac of any kind beats the hell out of Dell.
  9. Well, it can, actually, because Wyton's success—though undeniable—is really not based on his performance as a musician, not on his writing.
  10. Well, Chuck, it was actually 1939 and they went the way of the Bolden cylinder. Has Bob Sunenblick found that one yet?
  11. I found this (from the UK Amazon site) to be rather odd. What does it tell us about the 1000 Jazz Covers book? Hmmmmm
  12. Check Amazon—I think it's $70 or 75 But there is something about a design flaw...I'll dig it up. Here's a link re the alleged flaw.
  13. That will be 5 days before he, Chuck Berry, and I have a birthday How will he celebrate it?
  14. The police periodically warns that they do not make phone calls for the purpose of soliciting donations. We live in a largely artificially created climate of compulsory patriotism, and this is something these scam artists exploit to the hilt. When my mother passed, I went through her papers and checkbooks and it was amazing how many of these scumbags are out there: Wounded veterans, animals and just about any "cause" that brings out the Kleenex bombarded her with solicitations (mostly from Florida, I might add—she lived in Seattle) and I'm afraid she fell for these things. Even the Reader's Digest was scamming her.
  15. I was getting a lot of automated calls or calls that start out automated. They were often about credit cards that I don't own and such scams as police support, veterans support. That there is only one DNC registry makes perfect sense. One can register either or both numbers. There is also a renewal option, so I assume the "will remain on it permanently" pertains only to pre-February 2008 registry.
  16. Thanks for the reminder, my original 5 years were up and the pesky calls were coming in again. This thing really works and it does cover mobile phones, so I highly recommend it. If you are unable to use the phone in question, opt for the online solution—they will ask for your e-mail address and send you a verification link.
  17. Yes, I recall that, too, Valerie. Jazz was definitely also on the menu at Wells. I believe I read somewhere that Roscoe's was inspired by Wells.
  18. To me, chicken and waffles will always conjure up memories of many a night spent at Wells, in Harlem. This was the perfect way to cap an evening and the place was always filled with good times. Wells Supper Club (it closed about 9 years ago) had been serving c&w since the late 1930s—it was supposed to be a dinner to breakfast transition, of sorts. All I know is that it was great food in a great atmosphere.
  19. A search for Bessie Smith brought me right to a bio by Scott Yanow, who—as usual—screwed up readily checked facts. Then, imagine my surprise when I saw this photo of Bessie Smith's niece, Ruby...
  20. Have they solved the Goo Gone problem? That stuff had a foul odor of the lingering type, that's why I swore off it. I did, however find another solution (literally), plain old rubbing/isopropyl alcohol. It works very well, doesn't stink (at least not for long), and it is inexpensive—besides, we all probably have a bottle around the house.
  21. I believe my mother drank a cup of chocolate syrup before each feeding.
