  1. Thanks, Bev, I was going to school in Canterbury, so I still possess remnants of functioning memory.
  2. Allen, are "veternas" female veterans? Seriously, very interesting idea, but an enormous task (especially when you already have a fair-sized project going). Good to see that you feel up to it.
  3. Devastating!
  4. The England I remember and lived in as a young man was one of a very sooty Waterloo station where one applied her majesty's yellow, glossy paper to one's bum and killed one's time in a small movie theater, tucked away in a corner. I guess the fares were reasonable then, I mostly traveled between London and Canterbury. As I recall, I was in England when they nationalized the rails—could that be? Shortly after the War? Getting back to Sweden, I took a train from Stockholm to Copenhagen (over Helsingør) in 1984 and don't recall balking at the price. The trip was somewhat tedious, but pleasant. Of course, 24 years can make all the difference.
  5. Figuring that the ordeal was over, I did the civilized thing: grabbed my Bellmans plunta, a sealed copy of a J.R. Monterose album, and poured myself a modest glass of well-herbaled—and in other ways seasoned—schnapps. Not much left in this bottle, but I have had it for 36 years!
  6. When I saw this on the news, I was ready for it. Terkel had been in poor health for some time and, at his age, this is to be expected. That does not make his passing less sad, but, on the positive side is the fact that he left a rich legacy. His books will continue to give valuable peeks into history and, if anything become even more important with the years. One of my favorites is Hard Times—I learned a lot from that and I love the concept on which he based it. How fortunate we are that he was so prolific.
  7. Allen, I am still waiting for your instructions as to disposal of items depicted in bottom post of this thread.
  8. How did those Swedish guys get in here? I remember seeing them a few years back when I was on a fact-finding trip (for Conrad) in Lövånger. They were lending their ears to regional folk music and doing the darnedest dance with a three-legged elk.
  9. I second Brownie's old suggestion, the Vasa ship is a must, you won't find anything like it anywhere else—not even in England. I picked up a beautiful book there... Also, try to visit the Drottningholm Court Theatre. It is 250 years old and remarkably intact, even still used from time to time. I know that you are visiting from a country of great antiquity, but there is something very special about this place (which served for many years as a storage place, in essence, hiding the theatre beneath).
  10. Jonathan and Darlene Edwards —seriously.
  11. Call him by his original name, Fritz Jones, and you'll see him get real mad!
  12. Garner, at least, didn't adapt a Muslim name. So, he's ok.
  13. Allen, I thoroughly checked the nooks and crannies of the sofa you sat on, and I came up with this. Must be yours. Let me know what to do with it.
  14. MG, as you think about a new computer, bear in mind that you can install Windows on any new Mac. The only reason you might wish to do that is to run some of the applications you already have invested in—other than that, I am hard put to fathom why anyone would want that operating system installed.
  15. In my last few years—having enjoyed an eventful, spiritually (in a non-religious sense) rewarding life—I am constantly reminded of how fortunate I have been to have had so many dear friends. That is the greatest gift (besides health, of course) and one that I continue to enjoy even as I mourn the passing of all too many of them. I have for many years been dedicated to perpetuating the legacy of others and if, in the process, I leave a legacy of my own, so much the better. I am still working on that. Mainly, I hope to leave the kind of appreciation for the past that I developed when I stumbled upon jazz and fell in love with it sixty years ago. I also hope that I have contributed positively to the more recent past.
  16. Fantastic to have you back MG!!!!! You do mean to say "then I'll have to buy a Mac," don't you? Or has this period of involuntary absence not taught you a thing?

  19. Much of what you have seen could arguably be classified as human sacrifice. Thanks for all the positive feedback.
  20. I did not intend to dominate the thread "I came across...", but that is how it has turned out. I don't mind (although some input is always welcomed), however, it is getting a lot of access and I would like to know what my fellow O'ers and frequent flyers think. Is it becoming a bore? Does it seem so personal that you hesitate to pop in? Should I continue posting? If so, what would you most like to see? I realize that it looks like one big ego trip, but the stuff is coming from my nooks and crannies, so I guess it is inevitable that there's a lot that is related to me. I try to make it somewhat diverse, but it always ends up kinda one-sided. If you have an opinion of this thread, please share it—and don't hold back on criticism.
