  1. Very nice, Larry. I always liked Norvo (Was he ever on "I've Got a Secret"? ) Gives me a good opportunity to post a photo of Red and Louis, taken in the 1940s at WNEW. Thanks for posting this, and doesn't Kessel look like Pavarotti?
  2. Perhaps you were catching some Z's in more ways than one.
  3. That wasn't burnt cork, Allen.
  4. Love "Night of the Hunter." Also, "Nothing but a Man," w. Abbey Lincoln and Ivan Dixon—a beautifully done low-budget film from 1964.
  5. I, too, love Aretha on Columbia. Perhaps Mosaic ought to move the bar just a tad and let the lady in. When tight categorizing gets in the way of glorious experiences, it is time to rethink self-imposed limits.
  6. So was Leslie Gourse, so is Ann Coulter, so was Frank Kofsky, so were/are countless other inept and/or hateful people. It says something when you have to hide one handle behind another. I see that Jerry's death made the NYT front page, beneath the fold. That should bother our... photographer to the snorters?
  7. When I had received a few hundred VDs and it became clear that LPs were going the way of 78s, I took aside about three hundred LPs and sold the remaining 18,000 to my friend, Karl Knudsen (Storyville). They are now in storage in Copenhagen, along with even more (i.e. his old collection) awaiting unknown disposition. BTW, ABC News did a segment on vinyl this evening—sales are picking up, manufacture almost doubled since last year. One artist said she loved it, because her portrait on the cover was bigger.
  8. Guess he knew he was on Fox, so he went into tabloid mode. Sad.
  9. How far behind the times is Powhatan, VA?
  10. The media has again done what they do so well—they have made me (and many others, I suspect) sick of hearing about or seeing Phelps.
  11. Sue was a NY label—I visited their office once.
  12. If Atlantic is mentioned in this respect more than other contemporary labels, I think it is probably because there is a lot more money involved when it comes to Atlantic than, say Riverside, Prestige, or Blue Note. Atlantic's roots were in jazz, but it blossomed in the pop field and where there's a lot of money, there's often also more creative bookkeeping. True - but there's another factor. If you're doing a news or current affairs programme about this issue, who are you going to mention? Wilson Pickett, Ray, Aretha, Ben E King? Or Fontella Bass, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Muddy Waters, Little Walter? Atlantic artists get mentioned because they're more recognisable names. MG That is the same factor, MG—those artists brought in the money.

  14. I don't think Atlantic was any worse than the others.
  15. I had many occasions to see and talk to Ahmed and while I felt a closer bond with Nesuhi, Ahmed was always courteous and helpful. Ask the anonymous creep who posted above to define "scumbag."
  16. I'm enjoying Jonathan Schwartz's Saturday afternoon show on WNYC. He plays great records and has interesting commentary, including the occasional reminiscence of his father, Arthur Schwartz. It's always a pleasure to hear music presented by someone who really digs it. ANyone else here a listener? If not, it's also available online, check it out.
  17. I am no defender of record execs, and I have been very critical of some, but I don't hide my identity when I relate uncomfortable truths. That, I think, is not only cowardly but it also invalidates the finger-pointing. No, BM, "Morehouse" is not DEEP, although that is the name of a drummer from Chambersburg, PA, and Danny would be very familiar with him. I don't know who this guy us, but he clearly has a problem—let us not make it ours.
  18. I think you are wise to spew your hatred from behind a handle (poor Chauncey Morehose, he must have spun past China by now), but I wonder if you have made any effort to seek help.
  19. ESP might want to release it.
  20. We listen and visualize something like this... ....they hear the same thing and see only... I much prefer the former.
  21. Atheists don't go to heaven or hell. We go to Weehauken, NJ, which is also open to y'all.
  22. During the intermission at the MJQ's first farewell concert, Jerry took me aside and suggested that we "soon" get together at his place and listen to Lester Young, who, he added, represented the music he really likes. It never happened, but I thought his choice of listening material was a good one. Sad to hear that he is leaving us this way.
