That's the one. You got's it! Yeah, I love that version on the Naked City disc. I had heard little of Johnny Mandel's work prior to that but Zorn put me on the hunt for the real deal. -

I've got "side one's" answers all set and would post them if I knew you really had to have them now. There are still about a dozen folks who have yet to post. I have seen some of them perusing and most all of the others have been on the board recently. That might be just the way it goes though. I'll allow one of the alpha-males to come and pee on the other side of the rock before I post up the answers thread. -

Well considering how you all shake me up here I have been quickly devising my answers. Just to please a Morretti drinker at that (good stuff and the label model must have been my wife's late grandfather). Up to about five so far. Here's how I see it: 1-No one knows #1 except billyboy but he didn't quite hit it excactly. 2-Are you guys going to answer #2 or not? 3-couw's got this #3 he thinks. 4-Nate's onto this but tell me who the piano player is and you win a prize. 5-was hit on part by Nate but a few have given props to the bari on other cuts he's not on. 6-Pink Panther permeates this cut with the soloist that several have nailed down. I've got a soft spot for this flavor of cheese. 7-couw again! 8-who knows?...he's some british kids cartoon jingle jazz guy... there might be some 'avengers' connection but i don't know that. hopefully one of ya'll will let me know. 9-i've given hints all over here but couw again!! it's a trio setting. 10-yes this is solved within the thread. Tom Storer is right in how this guy's lyrics tend to sound high school after a time. but i love them here! 11-couw and mikeweil on this and the next. another cut from same was the intro to bft 5. 12-this disc should be required! if you don't have it ... i did see after the fact that a cut from this confounded mr. sangrey. 13-i wish mikeweil knew more about this band... i think he's heard of them before. 14-not european but maybe...who's playing guitar here??? the drummer's from #3. 15-with all that coleman vs farrel stuff you can do this...iknow i couldn't but i got the answers. and the soprano??? you're all better at this than this. B) and it really does somehow relate to #2. and #10. 16-completely soundtrack here. I think Jsngry had this guy but on the wrong cut. 'killer bob' on the vibes. 17-saxophonist here is on #19 too. another film score that Nate got. 18-does have that 'ascenseur pour itchyfoo' to it. almost all players here appear earlier but i threw it in for that Miles-y ref to compliment #s 2 and 15. 19-better Nate than... this is one gritty thing here. sorry that the piano player is not top shelf to some. it's the bassist's date and the trumpet player was on the same scene before the guy from 3 and 18. 20-you know this now. man I just cracked myself up with that long clue about this one a few pages back mikeweil had his sound on both instrument and vocal. and Jsngry had it up his alley all along. can someone tell me who is on the organ without looking though. he is playing rather reserved here as he probably didn't want to break it. ...answers I gots and some are ready to go. -

Blindfold Test Frequently Asked Questions
Man with the Golden Arm replied to randyhersom's topic in Blindfold Test
Yes. The moderator who sends out the disks is looking for reactions to the music. You don't really know if they are hoping you guess right or hoping you guess wrong. But you can be sure thay want to hear from you. If you don't like something, say so. Often that contributes to a lively discussion. But please post something about what you just listened to. Seems to me to be a great divide between sign-ups and feedback from the recipients of the BFTs. Even in looking back to the first half a dozen tests thus far one sees a great amount of discs being sent out, especially those twofers, and about a 60% discussion or reply ratio. For me as soon as that BFT hit the box I had it in the player and racked my wee wittle bwain trying to figure out what's what as well as simply enjoying the new sounds. I know my feeling is that I owe it to the compiler to give at least a check in within the discussion thread or even give it the standard short shrift if it is not one's "cup of tea". -

OK here is my hint on #2. I have already told that it relates in one degree of separation to one of the horn players (soloist / composer) on #15. The band in question playing on #2 is not his usual suspects and I am certainly not as well informed about all of the incarnations of this leader's various bands as you all have proven to be on prior BFTs (this was in place already and lo and behold he appeared on BFTs past). Maybe the "rinky-dinkyness" is that it was not recorded on "home turf" and the actual medium that this arranger was in charge of for this session turned out to be more of a spoof than anything to be taken seriously. Maybe it was the food. This way OOP CD, which I purchased as an import right when it came out and I really can't recall why, is a lot of fun when you get past a couple of very lame over the tops by a well known husky-eyed pop star. If I say it's a soundtrack... -

Still fifteen or so of the recipients have yet to respond but maybe that's the norm. Seems that the US postal service took about five days to get these things across the country. There are plenty of hints. Should there be more?? Looks like only six have really been identified within the thread links. Many of the players have been found out with some misplaced to other tunes than the one's they are on. Waiting for deus62 to get on board. He said he knew a bunch! -
Archie Shepp "French Ballads"

You found me out! Who cares about Archie Shepp anyway! :rsly: -
Having rekindled a recent Barney Wilen, Jazz in Paris etc... jones courtesy of this board I am curious as to what this title might be like. I have only heard a spit of Shepp and have been exposed only to his more outward bounding work. Any rec here??

Anybody else hear this? You know, the intro to the retitled "Haitian Fight Song" thing on MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS? Well this track is live as in studio but who knows. This drummer has a knack for pawing those traps as well as some brushing here. And IMO he is the true star of this out 'quartet'. Back to #2 though...the disc I plucked this from features the same big band covering some raucous Mingus charts. B) -

I'd only made reference to him in my hints posting a page or so back but alas I had never heard of him or actually paid attention to the fact that he played on many of mike's skin thumping kindred idol's dates. It's funny that I originally had a latin large group cut in here with a female vocalist and him in the alto spot without even knowing he was on the session. I finally just did an AMG on him and see that he actually recorded on a big bander with Rivers as well. -

Glad you shared that! Would you like to buy a champagne split as well? Funny that couw almost pinned this one to another piece from same artist that was a soundtrack to just about what you describe. My hint is that his lips are far more perpetually purced than Betty's. -
PayPal's Exchange Rate
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Late's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I just did a quick look at their site: [q]How does PayPal determine the foreign exchange rate for currency conversions? PayPal is not a currency dealer and therefore must purchase foreign currencies from its bank. PayPal receives a quoted wholesale rate from its bank (twice a day) and adds a 2.5% spread above this rate to determine the retail foreign exchange rate that is applied to customers who make a transaction that involves a currency conversion (such as a payment in Euros from a U.S. dollar balance), or a withdrawal of dollars by a U.K. user to his local bank account. The dollars must be converted to pounds sterling before withdrawal.[/q] Be nice if a feature was there to determine the going rates. -

I've held off on any Japan for a while as the last time I checked I was slack-jawed at that PayPal rate. I've been curious about this as well. So I now only buy Japanese stuff from folks who have already done the leg work, Late. -

Is that what they make you do over there? I think Zorn and seclusion together might be something that went away after the wall. He's really playing against his sur-name here. Should I say that it is and he's elsewheres here too. I guess you'll now be able to google up and answer. ps: couw's onto #3 (but it's discography is un-available) and we know you know #9. As it stands (and I'm not sure whether keeping tabs is the norm in the FAQ section) you all are onto many of these and have of course nailed quite a few directly. The links you've been throwing up are for the most part the ones. But mo' hintz: I think the tracks that need more sleuthing might now stand at 2, 8, 15, 19(one right on this alto player and the trumpeter is white). Many correct answers for the players on trax 5 & 6 (#5 is really a "gas" and #6 is more exotic). And track #7 is one cut from a badly needed re-issue but at least the artist has a website courtesy of board members. I have no idea who is on #8 save for the leader who is playing bass (maybe someone in the UK could give it up?). And #2 and #15 are related in maybe "one degree of separation"! -

Nate, I'd love to get more of your take on Zorn here. You got him and he appears elswhere that I think you nailed too. His playing on track #4 doesn't seem to thrill you I know and frankly I agree that the Clark "Voodoo" on Black Saint is truly a must for any. I was going to toss on another of his from the Spillane sessions called "Skit Rhesus" where he really goes at it in his accessible post bop thrash. Aside from his Masada work, which seems to be becoming totally his own sole avenue for his soloing, I'd be curious for you, or anybody, to pick at him a bit more. I must confess that without that 'News For LuLu' disc from years ago that turn-on that was lying in wait with only a handful of BNs at the time might have never become a realization. The piano player is actually the leader of the date on #4. His relaxed excellence and comfort is the key to this cut. I really just love the bouncey-ness of it all, especially after it starts out with such a bright noir lick. Jim's classic quote here regarding it being "Monk with all the night-time removed" is perfect. The rest of the "orchestra" are the usual suspects with the very smiley guy, who for my money is the "trap god", being replaced. -

I dig the shit out of it everytime I hear it. Oh man guys. This is what's great about this whole BFT thing. That cut has some big shoulders. I put it up after that brazen intro just because of how they both seem to have those huge Red Sea breaks in the mix of all that's going on. Track #2 seems inconsequentail at the start when butted up to the first one but it's how Mike splains it that it just goes over the top. How often do we get a cuica with a triple shot in a so called cheese laden tune? Trust me on this one that the arranger knows his stuff! And then #3 just picks up the ball and ...
