  1. I picked it up and am enjoying it a lot. I think the tracks added to what was the original lp are superior to the one left off, "It all comes back to you" which as Cuscuna explains in the liner notes, was chosen for its more commercial sound and had more "airplay potential" At first I thought the sound was good, but a bit thin, but the more I listen the more I like it.
  2. I agree with everything Allen said, including the last sentence.
  3. I enjoyed this one and fans of Jimmy Jones will like this article.
  4. Jim, I am sure you have thought of this already, but I would ask the club owners about parking and maybe what kind of vehicle is best- I would think they would have experience to advise you. That location, yes it is in the heart of the Village, the streets can get very packed any day or any time of the week and NYC has lots parking restrictions and they can be different for every street. Street fairs and parades - we do have them in the fall, can add to the complications. Also, do not underestimate NYC's ability to have a traffic jam, any time any place, so give yourself a lot of extra time. Wish it weren't Sunday night, but I am looking forward to seeing you guys play.
  5. Anyone get "the Big Beat" yet? Curious as to other opinions on the sound quality....
  6. Hey Lon, As a fan of this series, I am curious about your opinion on the sound quality of the "The Big Beat" RVG? (see my comments above) anyone else can chime in too.
  7. Hope you had a great birthday!!!

    August 2 RVGs

I picked up Oblique and Judgment and was very happy with the sound, particularly after the what I felt was a horrible job on The Big Beat. I will say however that my copy of Judgment had finger or lip prints in red all over it - not sure if paint or nail polish, lipstick? Back to the store and second copy did not have it.
  9. My condolences Berigan
  10. Stop the presses!!!! I am usually a big fan of this RVG series and recently picked up 3 from the current batch: Inventions & Dimensions, Fuego and The Big Beat. While I&D and Fuego sound great, the sound quality on The Big Beat Sucks!! It is actually worse, IMO, than the Mcmaster first cd issue many years ago. The RVG sound is muddy, the horns are muted - it sounds so bad. I am very disappointed.
  11. Happy birthday Guy
  12. [ I'll let you know when I get there. Chris did you already say where you a moving to or is that a secret??
  13. have a great birthday!!!!!!!!!
  14. Sitting here in Manhattan, my thoughts and prayers are with you Londoners and your city...
  15. ← Guy, I find the poor sound quality of On This Day ruins the whole thing for me.
  16. I can't believe I forgot to mention the two latest records with Hank Jones, George Mraz and Paul Motian. They are great!!!
  17. I agree with a lot of the above opinions. I think Lovano is a great player, not an innovator, but he does have a unique sound. Where I think he falls short is his writing, I wish that more of his compositions would grab me. I have a number of cds where he is the leader and "from the soul" "landmarks" and the "Quartets:at the vanguard" (not the 52nd street band at the vanguard which had horrible sound) come to mind as being very good. But I do agree with others who say that my favorite work of his is with the Paul Motian Trio.
  18. Well I have said before that I find the occasional Ratliff sentence to be completely incomprehensible. On the other hand, I would say his recent listening session interviews with Pat Metheny and Josh Redman have been great.
  19. Ted thanks for posting Ramsey's comments. He's a guy whose writing and opinions I have a lot of respect for. On the other hand, I think what Ratliff was saying was not that any of the pianists playing in the tribute concert would be boring, it was that tribute concerts to Ellington, Monk, etc. have been done so many times at these JVC things - that it can get old. Maybe Ratliff is saying other musicians can be explored for tribute concerts.
  20. He says the NYC JVC is really no good (big surprise) but that the Newport festival has now become the best of the the JVC festivals and I am really envious of you Rhode Island folks.
  21. Actually the track where Dewey plays is not the last tune, but rather track 8 "remembrance of things past" and I've always thought, though I am not sure, that Lovano lays out on that tune, making it still a trio track
  22. I have always liked this album and it is perhaps my favorite of the Milestones.
  23. thanks for posting the whole article ... I didn't see your post in the other forum.
  24. very interesting as usual. Josh and Ben listen to the music and Josh reacts. They discuss Rollins's "Saxophone Colossus", Trane's "Transition" and the Paul Motian Trio's "Trioism" ( I told ya'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
  25. Have a Great Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!
