  1. This was an interesting and enjoyable gig. Andrew's surprise guest was Charles Tolliver on trumpet!! And Revillot played the whole set. The drummer was not the Leroy Jones, but Eric McPherson. As usual in an Andrew Hill gig - moments of brilliance, moments of ragged ensembles, all combining into a wondrous thing that is exclusively Andrew. It was nice to see a fellow board member there and he was lucky enough to stay for the second set.

    Joe Lovano

I just got this one and am playing it now. I agree with those of you who think it is great. CLeveland Rocks!!!
  3. I have been watching the Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Fest 2004 DVD and there are several interviews with McLaughlin. THe guy has the strangest English accent I have ever heard and I have been to England several times and have travelled all around and I have never heard anything like that. His accent sounds almost eastern european. anyone else seen this DVD or heard him speak? I saw him in concert in the early 70s with Mahavishnu and don't remember this accent so either I have forgotten or this is a change.
  4. I only have the option of Friday and prefer the first set, if anyone wants to meet, let me know.
  5. I like this set a lot. It's some of the best Getz!!
  6. In my opinion nothing compares with the originals - nothing, nada!!!
  7. well duh! his hamster of course!
  8. A groan-o-meter? Or a tool that prevents his head from bobbing up and down and around like it did on that evening on the Isle of Wight?
  9. What are you saying Maren? That the rest of us boys weren't good looking?
  10. anyone want to speculate as to what Keith Jarrett had in that leather pouch he wore on his belt??
  11. I had a good time too. Sorry I didn't get to talk to you guys down at the other end of the table.
  12. Oh God Sundog Yes, yes, yes, I adore them both!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  13. Two more things: 1) I love Mick's singing but I agree that of late it has been a bit silly. 2) I like Tom Jones and wonder if many of you remember how popular his TV show was here in the States. I think his singing on the theme song for the Bond film "Thunderball" was fantastic and is my favorite Bond theme of all.
  14. I agree totally Bev. Those early Mercury (in the States anyway) albums and the early Faces stuff - he is just awesome as a singer and I can't forget his work with Jeff Beck.
  15. Interesting.. I once read an interview with Mick where the interviewer asked him how it felt to be the greatest rock and roll singer and Mick said that honor goes to Van Morrison.
  16. Thanks JAW, What's interesting is that I was holding a copy of this in my hands and nowwhere on the cover or the obi strip does it say anything like 24 bit like it does on many of the japanese issue cds. I know what Amazon says but they are sometimes wrong. wow - are you saying this japanese Extrapolation is already out of print? It has a 2005 date of issue on it.
  17. Does anyone know if this series which has a catalogue prefix of UCCM is 24 bit? I am salivating over the reissue of John McLaughlin's "Extrapolation".
  18. BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. I finally got this one. Love the concert portion, but the interviews and other footage are for the most part pretty sorry I think. They fall into one of several categories: 1) Irrelevant - Perhaps Miles did follow Tiny Tim at the concert but must I be forced to watch Tim footage -even if it is about 15 seconds 2) I have heard these people say these things before 3) these people are talking more about themselves than about Miles 5) some of the meaningless platiitudes were almost laughable I am the only one that feels this way?

    Renee Rosnes

I like her too and you guys have pointed out some good recordings of hers and I have nothing to add there. I do want to tell a littlle story to show what a classy person she is. She had published a transcription in Downbeat a few years ago ( I think it was Downbeat) with some explanation of how a solo worked. I had some questions about the explanation thinking maybe the editors had screwed up a point and called the mag. They said they had no idea what I was talking about but would pass my questions on to Renee. A couple of hours later the phone rang and it was Renee. I almost fell out of my chair!!! She nicely and very clearly answered my questions.

    FREDDIE IS 67!

    Love ya, Dude!!!
  23. Catesta, Let me know the where and when of lunch/dinner with Maren- if I possibly can, I'd love to join you folks. I can then meet my first board members. Very cool. I'm going to leave picking the place to maren. My guess, lunch would be somewhere around Union Square. I'll be in touch. Can I join in on this lunch? Chuck is probably right, but what the hell. I sent maren a PM for her to pick a time and spot. I'm coming from Queens in the morning. Anybody else? I'm interested, depending on the day and time, and if anyone needs any suggestions for restaurants or bars with good draft beer selections, I'm your man.
  24. You know rostasi, If you had been willing to discuss the new Paul Motian Trio album, then I probably would never have seen this thread.
