    Jim Hall

I like Jim Hall too. One of my favorite Jim Hall moments and a Sonny Rollins moment too is from The Bridge. After Hall's solo on "Where are you" he plays a chord expecting Rollins's return with more of Sonny's solo, but Sonny comes in so, so late, agonizingly so, you wonder if Sonny was rushing back from another room. The reality is more probably that Sonny is just showing his mastery of stretching the time. But does Jim Hall get flustered, lose his place or stumble at all? Not in the least. 2 masters in action.
  2. Update on above, apparently Mingus 1968 is not out of print, but the Oslo concert apparently is. So I change the Oslo video to $25.00 Mingus 1968 is $20.00
  3. this is a great 1966 interview of Bill by his brother and it includes a lot of discussion about Bill's ideas on jazz and music in general, a bit of theory thrown in. It's got a bit of narration by Steve Allen and also Bill plays some of his tunes like "Very Early" and "Time Remembered". It's unlike anything about him I have seen. $20.00
  4. These are out of print on not on DVD 1) Charles Mingus Sextet (Oslo Norway 1964 with Eric Dolphy,Johnny Coles, Clifford Jordan,Jaki Byard, Dannie Richmond) $20.00 2) Mingus 1968 (directed by Thomas Reichman) (features club performances including John Gilmore and Charles McPherson, interviews and Mingus getting evicted) $25.00
  5. I bought this cd some time ago and although I am a fan of McLaughlin's, I have to say that I was disappointed. I found the orchestral piece to be a bit on the bombastic side and the guitar quartets sound a bit on the "lite" side to me. My 2 cents.
  6. Well I am glad some people bought Montreal Tapes with Joe Henderson and that the discussion has begun, but I disagree with the criticisms of this Cd. I do not hear that Joe's playing diminishes when Foster and Haden comes in on "Round Midnight" as Dr. J. finds. I also have no problem with Al Foster's playing on this record as JSngry does, but I am no expert on drummers. The more I play this one, the more I like it. My apologies to anyone who bought this and feels I overpraised it.
  7. I think his best album, as someone already said, is "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs" followed closely by the "Crystal Silence" album duets with Gary Burton (the studio one, not the live one) and "Tones for Joan's Bones" and then the first Return to Forever album (that's the untitled one I guess) with airto, flora, clarke, and farrell. I think these 3 hold up well today, but god he made a lot of awful ones.
  8. OK FFA, I am not nearly as eloquent as a lot folks on this board, and you yourself gave a very nice review. I guess I am trying to support this Cd and urging others to get it because, like you, I think it is a great performance. As for my impressions, as I said in my initial post, the personnel (Charlie Haden, Al Foster) is the same as the marvellous "An Evening With Joe Henderson" that came out on Red and that is the obvious Cd to compare this to (although as you said, it brings to mind State of the Tenor too, except that's Ron Carter). One key difference from "An Evening With" is the recording quality in that Montreal has much better sound. Another point is that the tunes are a bit longer on this new one- a couple of the four tunes around twenty minutes-but not boring at all. Although it is a Charlie Haden cd, JoeHen gets most of the soloing space and so it seems like his cd to me and, as you said, these are masterful performances if you like JoeHen, including another "Round Midnight" which stands up well agains the Live in Japan and At the Lighthouse versions. But I should add there are good, lengthy solos by both Haden and Foster. What can I say - I have loved almost every Henderson Cd, except Porgy and Bess and that Big Band one. I don't find him to engage in the pet lick or rote behavior any more than any of the other greats and so that is not an issue with me- all of these great solosists sort of develop a language so to speak. Not that anyone's reading this........................................................
  9. Scientists are reporting a strange phenonemon. Apparently, planet Joe Henderson's orbit has altered, taking it further and further away from the Organissimo Sun. A shame.
  10. I have the Conn or Rare Groove or whatever it was called that came out in the 90's. I have seen on this Board or the BNBB people saying that the new RVG may have used a much better master. Does anyone know?
  11. this is all great guys, but I hope somebody wants to discuss the Montreal Tapes!!!
  12. Hey posters on this thread, It's awfully lonely on the Joe Henderson planet, isn't it?
  13. Just picked this one up and it is quite, quite, good!! Same trio but much better sound quality than "An Evening With Joe Henderson" on Red. JoeHen fans where are you????
  14. The one that comes to mind is Pat Martino's "Live at Yoshi's" !!!!!!!
  15. I have a paperback book of her photographs, maybe it is the same one. I don't know anything about her, but I love her pictures.
  16. The more I listen, the better it gets. Always a good sign. Am I really the only one on the board that has this? What about you Brits?
  17. I picked this one up and am amazed at what a straight ahead and good jazz album this is. I'm digging it a lot on my initial listen. Not as good as Extrapolation, but sort of in that vein.
  18. I have never heard it, but I like him and like McLauglin (who's on it) and the other guys on the album. would love to hear your opinions as it is very pricey
  19. Mahavishnu Orchestra, Cleveland OH, small university concert, would have been early 70's since they were playing stuff from Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire. Awesome.

    Pat Martino

I'm a big fan too. I love the Yoshi's cd and the Head and Heart twofer. I like also the new Think Tank.
  21. well deus 62, I'll offer a conflicting opinion just to confuse you more. First of all, I love this music (most of it- as I explaint below)- so yes you should get it-but the issue is which version. Not sure how much of an audiophile you are, but I think the box, which came out many years ago, definitely has inferior sound to the japanese mini-lp version currently available in 24 bit and probably to the more recent american versions. I also think that the Brown-Roach stuff (with Harold Land or Sonny Rollins) is the best stuff and also the Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington dates are great. However, I did not care for the dates with the other vocalists and I think some of the jam session material is a bit on the weak side. Given the above, I think you could spend the same money for better sound quality but fewer sessions and come out better. Just my two cents!
  22. OK, you guys have whetted my appetite, I have heard Freddie King but don't own anything. Is there any one cd (single, not a box) that is the best in terms of material and sound quality? I see that Rhino has a collection - is that good?

    DVD burner

I recently got one of the Panasonic stand alone DVD player/recorders. I then plugged that into the TV and plugged my VCR into the DVD recorder. When playing VHS tapes through the DVD (which as I said above my VCR now is plugged into the DVD recorder), I notice that the the flesh tone of Caucasian actors drifts at times to slightly more pink or yellow. Is this a problem unit I have or what might be causing this?
  24. Danasgoodstuff- I agree with a lot of what you are saying and I have never thought of Clapton's voice as particularly compelling - give me Jack Bruce or Stevie Winwood anyday- that's why they were the vocalists in those bands. DRJ- I am a fan of Jeff Beck's too. I particularly love the Truth album. But I think he engages in a form of sterility too, which is that he seems so amazed with his abilities. I often get the feeling that he is showing off and it comes through in the playing. Jimmy Page or Led Zeppelin for that matter, never did much for me except a few moments on that first album. JAZZBO- I have seen BB over a dozen times, the first time at Kent State University in 1968 or maybe 1969- you are right - he transfixes an audience. That marvelous voice has lost some of its gold these days and it may be time to hang up the mike. By the way, I saw Stevie Wonder open for the Stones in 1972 and he did not transfix anyone-maybe the context or maybe and off-day?
  25. Thanks couw then if i understand this correctly, the data is actually on the "underside" of the label side- that is sort of in the middle of the disc. By the way, then by your explanation, putting NEATO label on the label side of the disc is great because it would prevent scratches.
