OK, you guys have whetted my appetite, I have heard Freddie King but don't own anything. Is there any one cd (single, not a box) that is the best in terms of material and sound quality? I see that Rhino has a collection - is that good?

I recently got one of the Panasonic stand alone DVD player/recorders. I then plugged that into the TV and plugged my VCR into the DVD recorder. When playing VHS tapes through the DVD (which as I said above my VCR now is plugged into the DVD recorder), I notice that the the flesh tone of Caucasian actors drifts at times to slightly more pink or yellow. Is this a problem unit I have or what might be causing this?

Danasgoodstuff- I agree with a lot of what you are saying and I have never thought of Clapton's voice as particularly compelling - give me Jack Bruce or Stevie Winwood anyday- that's why they were the vocalists in those bands. DRJ- I am a fan of Jeff Beck's too. I particularly love the Truth album. But I think he engages in a form of sterility too, which is that he seems so amazed with his abilities. I often get the feeling that he is showing off and it comes through in the playing. Jimmy Page or Led Zeppelin for that matter, never did much for me except a few moments on that first album. JAZZBO- I have seen BB over a dozen times, the first time at Kent State University in 1968 or maybe 1969- you are right - he transfixes an audience. That marvelous voice has lost some of its gold these days and it may be time to hang up the mike. By the way, I saw Stevie Wonder open for the Stones in 1972 and he did not transfix anyone-maybe the context or maybe and off-day?

Thanks couw then if i understand this correctly, the data is actually on the "underside" of the label side- that is sort of in the middle of the disc. By the way, then by your explanation, putting NEATO label on the label side of the disc is great because it would prevent scratches.

Well said Jazzshrink!!!!!!!!! I think the best Clapton is the Mayall Bluesbreakers disc that Jazzshrink showed the cover of, Cream of course, and then the wildly underrated Blind Faith disc. I don't care for almost anything that followed. I think Clapton is about as about as good as the white boy blues stuff gets and he is quite realistic and humble about his place in the blues world, as other posters here have pointed out. I know EC acknowledges his debt to Freddie King, but it blows my mind so few on this board have picked BB King as an influence or even as great blues guitarist. For me it doesn't get any better than BB, and it doesn't hurt that he has the greatest blues singing voice.

Shrdlu, thanks for your comments. I guess I really don't understand that the label side is the one that carries the music, so please explain. Here's why I am confused: If you look at the way a cd player is set up, even a small portable one, the laser is on the opposite of the label side- that is it shines up from the bottom to the silver side. Also, all of the labelling stuff they sell like NEATOs etc, place a completely opaque label on the label side, so how is the laser reading through that?????

Yes, they are like pages and generally fit four cds to a page. Do they, in fact, abrade, anyone?

Those CaseLogic or other brand cd "notebooks" that hold cds - are these safe and effective storage mechanisms, or do cds need to be in some type of jewel box? Some notebooks I have tried seem to have sort of a tight fit, and if notebook is full there may be undue pressure on the cds- is it harmful???

Anyone bought any decent machine that does this? I have seen one box units that have both VHS and DVD and say they record. Does that mean you can chuck your VCR and transfer your VHS tapes to DVD and play either VHS or DVD on one machine? Anybody have any suggestions for good units?

Happy Birthday Dmitry!! Hey I thought you left this Board.

Thanks everybody for your helpful info.

I am supposed to take a bunch of kids to an Xmas movie. Has anyone seen this one and know if it is appropriate for kids who are young enough (around age 6) to believe in Santa or do they reveal the awful truth?

Evan, If you are looking for the big jazz names of international fame, well yes, they rarely pass through Cleveland, but there should have been some local guys playing that are quite good. Don't tell me the Boarding House or Nighttown, which feature live jazz 5 nights a week have closed? these clubs are on the east side and maybe you didn't go there.

I need a translation Chris.

Man with Golden Arm and Evan, Sadly Wax Stax went out of business about 5 years ago and so did the place in the Old Arcade- that is a beautiful place to visit but the store is gone. Oh Evan, not jazz related but if you get a chance treat yourself to a visit to Great Lakes Brewery near the West Side Market. This place has some of the best beers I have had on any continent.

Evan, If he's playing I would highly recommend seeing Ernie Krivda. He's a marvelous local tenor player who can really surprise you. the Boarding House in University Circle has some great local guys and Nighttown on Cedar Hill hass both local and national acts. Check it out. As for cds, Record Exchange used to be so good, but is dropping in selection over the years. Not sure there's a great place to buy jazz.

Bol, I think you did the right thing. The box is about one third alternates and other material that I found I rarely turned to. It's a bit of overkill and also the packaging and particularly the booklet for the box I found to be disappointing. With your 4 cds you have got what you need, I think.

Joe Henderson - The State of the Tenor Volumes 1 & 2.

I agree with you Clifton. That's why I started a similar thread a couple of weeks ago. I see you are having the same luck I had. And I thought it was just me.....

It's one of my all time favorites. This one should be a revelation to those who think Joe is strictly a "licks" player. The sound is not bad, but I would love an RVG of this one.

AOW November 16-22 -SAM RIVERS Fuchsia Swing Song

One of my all time favorite albums. Great tunes, great players and great playing. It's a monster. -
This is one of the greatest records of the 90's and one of my favorite tribute records. No attempt to ape the playing on the original records and the instrumentation is quite different- just drums, sax, electric guitar and bass. Brilliant playing by Motian, Lovano, Frissell, and Marc Johnson. Can't say enough about this great record. Just reissued on winter & winter from the old JMT label and the sound is now 24 bit and a bit more sharp at that!

Well, you have put a lot of restrictions in your post Hutch head. The best single Cd on lester young is, in my opinion, the Ken Burns Jazz series - it's a compilation but great picks and the sound is excellent, to my ears. my favorite Lester Young is with Count Basie 1936-40, but this necessarily involves multi-disc sets either the Decca Box or the Hep labels volumes 1 and 2. Next favorite is the Aladdin Years, but that is a two disc set - great stuff.

I am more in the camp of JSangrey, DR J, and others who are fans of Joe Henderson. He actually seems to me to be less of a licks player than a lot of other guys out there (and I note that if you compare his solos on the same tunes from different recording they are often quite different) And as for being a "mike" player, I managed to see Joe about a dozen times and in small clubs (such as Fat Tuesday's in Manhattan), he often turned away from the mike or else seemed to be completely unconcerned about whether the bell of the horn was on the mike and he filled up the room at all times. I can't get into a big analysis of why I think he's so great, others are more intelligent and articulate, but I can't get with the devaluation of the man.
