  1. JMJK, Bleecker Bob's is not on Bleecker, but west 3rd street, fairly close to 6th Ave. near the Blue Note Club. At least it was last time I was there.
  2. I vote for General Zhukov!
  3. There's a place called Stooz in the East Village, it's on 7th street (or maybe 6th) very close to Tompkins Square Park. They have some rare birds there.
  4. Thanks for your reviews guys! Anyone going to see them tonight, like me?
  5. I own it and it is not one of my favorite Rollins records. The long title track is a little by aimless in my opinion. But I do like the other tracks and particularly "we Kiss in a Shadow" - is a compelling performance. I give it a mixed review.
  6. Free for All, I own the movie, so I think I can answer your questions. Sonny Rollins is credited in the film as the composer of the music, except for the title song which is a Bacharach/David composition. I don't think any of the Impulse CD is directly on the film, the Impulse CD contains the same band doing slightly different and often more extended versions of the tunes done in the movie. I don't know if there is an actual Alfie soundtrack, but based on my hearing of it (just the other night anyway), I think the Impulse CD is much better. In the movie some tunes are only very brief, as little as 30 seconds to a minute. These same tunes get much longer treatment on the Impulse CD. My impression is that the sound quality on the Impulse CD is superior to what I hear on the film.
  7. Love Alfie, And yes the versions on the Cd are not the same as in the film, but since Rollins wrote the music for the film, perhaps "inspired by" doesn't quite capture it. They are very similar. My other great jazz soundtrack is "Last Tango in Paris" with Gato Barbieri.
  8. good one catesta. Happy Birthday Bird!!!
  9. I know I'll be forgetting some and this list is too long but here it goes: Five Easy Pieces (Brad and Jazzmoose - which scene? I remember a lot of them) The Last Detail (maybe Jack Nicholson's best) Cool Hand Luke Lawrence of Arabia Last Tango In Paris (and you get Gato too!) Bananas Shampoo The Spy who came in from the Cold The Ipcress File Bedazzled (the original, of course) Alfie (and you get Rollins too!) Shoot the Piano Player La Dolce Vita 8 1/2 Amarcord The Apu Trilogy Goldfinger Knife in the Water ( and you get Komeda too!) Hard Day's Night Seven Samurai Seven Beauties Seventh Seal Swept Away Rashomon Wild Strawberries Virgin Spring The Deer Hunter Slapshot Glengarry Glen Ross (you get Wayne too!) The Long Goodbye Once Upon a Time in the West Duck Soup Vertigo Rear Window North by Northwest
  10. So Dmitry, If you went to see the Paul Motian Trio, give us your review, please.
  11. Well Brad, Not exactly, not sure what JT means, but I would have loved it if the sound didn't suck.
  12. Scroll down a bit brad, to page 2 and you can see my review and others. I think the playing is marvelous, the sound quality is atrociously bad, IMO. Yours truly, The Invisible Man
  13. I didn't know that The Mule. By the way, my comments about the ripoffs are not meant to discourage anyone from seeing the film or enjoying the rest of the music, which I did immensely and I think others will too.
  14. Dmitry, I would be definitely up for seeing that gig - they are probably my favorite working band. I couldn't go until Friday or Saturday, though or else the following week since I see they are booked for 2 weeks, right?
  15. I agree the Mule. It's a fun movie. Did you notice all the great music in the film, including jazz of course. But what about the "original" Freddy Freeloader and Blue in Green ripoffs? Miles could sue, or maybe it should be Bill, or both?
  16. You should check out "Nightown" or the "Bop Stop" in Cleveland Ohio.
  17. Thanks USE3D.Maybe it is working. Here's what happens. After I read the message in INBOX, it click on the reply button at the bottom. then I get a box with "welcome to your control panel" at the top, then Recipient's name. then a series of bars: One says "enter your message" but there is no box there. Lower down is "enter your post" and there is the text of the message I received. I guess I am supposed to scroll that down and put my message on top of it?
  18. I have internet explorer version 6.
  19. When I hit the reply button after reading a private message, i don't get a box to enter text and can't figure out how to do it. Anyone clue me in on what I am doing wrong?

As others have mentioned here I love the Spaces album and think it is very underrated and rather singular in that it doesn't fit the usual fusion record at all to me. Not sure what you mean JSangrey when you call it "wildly undisciplined" - I don't hear that so please clue me in?
  21. I am somewhat disappointed in the Horace Silver Trio RVG. I did not have it before and I am a big fan, but he appears on this disc not to have yet emerged from an overwhelming Bud Powell influence, not that Bud is a bad influence, but you might as well go to the source. Anyone else agree?
  22. I can't add much to what others have already said, but I wanted to say this is a favorite of mine. It's just to perfect in every way: the melodies, the voices, the instruments. I can't imagine it being done any better. One of the best jazz/bossa nova albums ever!
  23. Happy Birthday Lon!
  24. I like a lot of what has already been mentioned. But, I am surprised Keith Jarrett is not mentioned more in this thread. One could argue he was the dominant new jazz artist of the 70's with the Solo Concerts, and the American and European Quartets - whether you liked him or not, he was at or near the top. I think he made some great contributions.
  25. Well I picked it up and while the playing is marvelous, the fidelity of the recording is one of the worst live recordings I have ever heard. This has about the same sound quality as Bird at the Roost. Apparently done by Kurt Lundvall - this is a real shame because it so detracts from some great music.
