  1. As I recall it was comprised of the raps between tunes. It's something you listen to once.
  2. Slim Pickens Slam Stewart Slow talkin' Jones
  3. How is this so? Would a stereo cartridge take a click and put it to one channel instead of both? Yes. With a mono cartridge you'd get the same thing on either channel. But, if you have one quiet channel, take a Y chord and use that channel for L and R. In general, mono records, whether 33. 45. or78 sound better played with mono cartridges.
  4. Hot. In general I thought the women were better cast than the men.
  5. ghost of miles: Did they strip BLACK DAHLIA's storyline down as well as the writers did in L.A. CONFIDENTIAL?I thought so. The flaws in my book were a certain quirkiness that I'll attribute to De Palma and possibly the casting and acting of the two male leads. Werf: What a bummer. Werf, I can see you're a JE fan and you really disliked the movie. And that seems to be the opinion of most of the criticism I've heard and read of BD. I don't see where it's that bad.
  6. My wife and I went to see it it yesterday. Clifton Commons multiplex theatre. The theatre I was in was empty. Myself, my wife and maybe two other couples. I guess this flick is offically a flop. I dunno. I dug it. Was it as good as LA Confidential ? No. Not imho. My wife thought it was good. Nothing special. Not bad. When I read the reviews panning it I thought ..well..that's what someone who doesn't dig Ellroy as an author would say. Also, I dig Ellroy; so I'm going to see this flick. At the end it all comes together. Anybody else see it? Anybiody else who is an Ellroy fan?
  7. Has Horace ever made a bad one?
  8. Captain Hook KD Lang Jerry Springer
  9. For starters - I'd like to know if it's variable speed. Nothing in the blurb about that. Edit to add: AHHH! it IS variable spedd. I missed that in the first read thru. I wonder if there's anything like this that would play 78s. http://www.amazon.com/Ion-iTTUSB-Turntable...0320722?ie=UTF8
  10. If it's funny ... it's funny. Hip people take the humor as intended, racists make something else of it. And the (majority of?) people who are neither...? MG Those who get it being hip and those who don't (or misconstrue it) being unhip.

  12. One more thought about Amos and Andy. Do we make a distinction between the blackface white guys doing it as opposed to the black actors who did the 50s tv show? Did we enjoy one more than the other?
  13. I think Clem's got the microphone on this one and I pretty much see things as the same way. This is wayyyyy complex and cuts all ways. Almost to the point of the Fats qoute ( or Duke quote - or whoever said it). If you don't get this you'll never get it. (Or it will take a lot of thought and experience.) BTW #1 - I know what HNIC is. BTW #2- I bought "Check and Double Check" for 99 cents in Paterson last year. I still haven't watched it. I bought it because of Duke. I've seen that clip. I think a lot us here have. It's the one where Freddie Jenkins fans his ax. I thought I'd like to see it in context. Haven't watched it yet and I suspect that there is no context. Just a flick with Duke in the middle of it.
  14. Has anyone noticed that ALL the pop stations, whether oldies or contemporary, are really WAYYYYY over compressing everything? I can't stand the sound of these stations what ever they're playing !
  15. I've recently reread "The Sirens Of Titan". After 40+ years. I still think it's one of the best books ever written. Chuck...you're fortunate to have hung out with him. That HAD to be interesting.
  16. What Lon and Brownie said pretty much sums it up for me as well. In SOME cases the sessions ARE complete. The first session on the set (McKenzie/Condon) IS complete most others are just a sampling. The entire Bud Freeman Decca lp "Wolverine Jazz" is there and the entire Bud Columbia "Comes Jazz"lp. The Rhythmakers is just a sampling, but if you can find the whole set - don't miss it. There is one Art Hodes session with 3 of the 4 tunes recorded that date. AFAIK that is the first appearance of any of those 4 sides on cd and maybe even lp. I would love to find that 4th tune !
  17. I don't believe so. The chepness may manifeest itself in relativly bad sound, but I don't believe the pitch is affected.

    Eddie Gomez

Yeah. My post sounds a little harsher than I meant it, but I DO think Ron's intonation tends to go out and Eddie's is more on target, espescially on solos. It's a tough ax to stay in tune with and overall I love both Ron and Eddie's playing.

    Better intonation (for one thing.)
  20. Happy New Year to you and your loved ones. All the best.
  21. They do make variable speed cd players. I've never owned one and I'm not sure how they work, but it's not the same principle that applies to turntables or tape players. In tt and tape, when the tape travels faster or the tt turns faster the pitch increases, the tempo gets faster and vice versa. This is ususally just a variation between machines that can get magnified over several generations. In digital media you can intentionally change the tempo without affecting the pitch AND if so desired you CAN alter the pitch. So ususally DDD recorded are true to the pitch origanlly recorded (unless intentionally altered). ADD or AAD can be off pitch because they are subject to the variables that are effect pitch and tempo.
  22. So there are just 4 tracks that weren't on the lps then? Still, I find this hard to resist. The sound will probably be great. PLUS session info. Non existent on the King lps.
  23. You can. It depends on the mastering (or remastering). It shouldn't happen (unless intentional) with something that was recorded digitally from the start, but when tape or turntables (vinyl, shellac etc) are involved speed diffferences between machines can caused pitch problems. If the person doing the digital transfer is aware and takes the trouble to correct it (JRT Davies did) then the finished product should be accurate. BTW, many early turntables had variable speed to allow for pitch correction.
  24. I'm shocked! I assume you mean that it's a quarter of a semitone up. I find it incredible that a firm would manufacture a series of decks that doesn't quite run at the correct speed - and not correct the problem! But it occurs to me - how would I know if my own machine were out? I don't know. MG It helps if you play or own a musical instrument. You compare the pitch you know is correct to the pitch on the record. The problem is that records can be off pitch also, so it has to be a record you know is perfectly in tune. OR you can buy a test record. A variable speed tt usually has a visual strobe where you can tell if it's at the right speed. Enough records are off pitch that for me a variable speed TT is a necessity.
  25. I gotta say...... Ursala has me smiling all weekend. I went to the gig last night - picked up my bass- and started playing the bass line to "A Shot In The Dark" to check the amp. Everybody in the band smiled. I showed the video to my wife and she cracked up. I find myself smiling and it's becase I'm thinking of this routine. Thanks Jim.
