  3. You mean Amadeus wasn't realistic either ??!!?
  4. I know some muisician friends and bandmates of mine who were offended by the omission in the movie of any mention of Max Roach and the emphasis on Red Rodney, they felt at Max's expense, and they saw a racial angle in this. At the time, my comment was that the black-white angle was "better Hollywood". Not really a justification but more a comment on what I thought motivated the writers.
  5. I'm VERY bad about getting rid of music. I actually regret getting rid of the only two items I can think of that I've ever returned. One was in the early 60s. I bought the Kingsmen lp with "Louie Louie" on it, thought the band sounded like schittt and I returned it to the record store. The other was a Walter Becker cd that came out about 10 years ago. Again I returned it to the store. In both cases I wish I had the recordings. I know The Kingsmen won't sound like accomplished players to me, but I think I might get more of a kick out of it now. I can't actually bring myself to buy the cd reissue. It's kind of hard to explain. As far as Becker goes...I like Fagen and Steely Dan's work so much that I'm wondering if I missed something..just listened on the wrong day or something. Other than those two..anything I've given away or sold was duplicates or a cd that was replaced by a better quality issue. Even then I'd sooner give it to a friend than sell it.
  6. YEAH ! I dig it too. It's still in heavy rotation for me.
  7. Oscar Toney Spyder Turner Jerry Butler
  8. Just posting to say that I agree with the previous posts. Just go where the music takes you. It's like water flowing downhill. ...or your bank account falling below sea level.
  9. Actually, and I know it's hard for someone unaccustomed to early recordings to hear this at first, but the ODJB Victor recordings are very well recorded given the technology of the time.
  10. Sad news, Chris. I enjoyed his work not only as a producer, but also as an arranger. I liked his charts A LOT.
  11. I reacted similarly. I knew the ODJB records pretty well so I recognized them when it came on in Allen's set (I was listening on a discman while walking), but I definitely detected "something" extra that they brought to the music. It prompted me to listen to the RCA CD of all the 1917 ODJB recordings for the first time in a couple of years.
  12. Jimmy Rushing's "The Smith Girls". I think this is the only Jimmy Columbia that hasn't been reissued and I think this is the one that would benefit the most sonically in a Mosaic reissue.
  13. My take on it would be that there is a lot of early and pre-jazz here that not only is very enjoyable while also being informative, but that also much of this is off the beaten path. You are flat out not going to encounter the vast majority of material here anyplace else. So while there is King Oliver and The ODJB, etc, there are also bands you have not heard (or heard of perhaps) that also shed much light on what happened in the early development of Jazz.
  14. Not to over analyze anything, but I still listen to "The Sidewinder" 40 something years after it's release. I listened to it when it first came out and I still listen to it. I'm not comparing it to anything else by Lee or to anything else by anyone. I still dig it when I listen.
  15. YOU BET ! I'm IN ! I'll be emailing you today Allen.
  16. I'm running into the same problems.
  17. Yes, pretty darned good stuff, isn't it. PEE WEE! I have it on vinyl for many years. YES ! It is pretty darned good. I'm curious about the 4 extra tracks, although there is no doubt in my mind I'll dig them.
  18. The Company Of Strangers by Robert Wilson. WWII espionage. I previously read and enjoyed A Small Death In Lisbon by the same author. Similar subject matter.
  19. I agree that Thornel is underated. He was a great and interesting player. One question. The Jimmy Smith Respect album - I haven't listened in awhile and I don't remember if there is more than one "band" or more than one guitarist, but I know that's Eric Gayle on a major portion, if not all of that record. I don't recall a personel listing on my vinyl - anybody have the complete personel for that record? I'm thinking Bob Bushnell, Purdie, Eric and Jimmy.
