  1. 30% thru July 24th. Live it up. http://f.chtah.com/i/9/276579820/071905_coupon.htm
  2. This is most unfortunate. I only wish I was in a better position to assist.
  3. Same is true here in DSM. They've got a dozen or more titles. The two I've named are just the ones that I want, but don't already have. Red Garland, Wynton Kelly, Barry Harris (several), Dex/Al Cohn/SamNoto/Blue Mitchell and others also in the racks.
  4. CD. (XCD 1227) Just one of several nice looking items in the Half Price bins. Heading back today for Dolo Coker's California Hard.
  5. Not sure how I missed it before. But there's more electric piano that I'd recalled. Still, doesn't spoil the album for me. Just makes it more of a period-piece.
  6. Picked up this one yesterday. Farrell - Tenor Chick Corea - Piano, Electric Piano Bob Magnusson - Bass Lawrence Marable - Drums January 29, 1979 Nice stuff. High energy, start to finish. Inspired, I'd say. And one of the best recordings of Speak Low I've heard. Chick sounds like Chick of this era, especially on electric piano (Bara-Bara). For my tastes, just about the right amount of electric piano for me - not much. This is also the last of the really good straight-ahead material I've heard from Farrell. (Haven't heard Vim 'n Vigor.) Marable good as always. Can't comment on sound quality; I've only heard on junky car system and PC. Picked this and several others up at Half-Price Books for $4.98 each. A good 'un indeed.
  7. I'll follow Lon's pattern Jo Jones. Oh, bop/hard bop? Art Blakey, Tony Williams, Billy Higgins
  8. At present, I'm just putting my ear really close to the stylus and turning up my hearing aid to "high". It's a tough way to go, but ever since the dog knocked the horn off the Victrola. I'm planning to use this with my Sumiko Blue Point Special; 2.5mV, I believe. Agree. Variable impedance would be nice. Mono switch too. Probably both shortcomings could be addressed by a little at-home tweaking. And, on a $150 device, I'd be willing to take the risk. Amp? You mean, like, for speakers?
  9. http://www.rolls.com/new/vp129f.html I've been eyeing this item for about 18 months. I've heard that the gain is limited - my principal source of hesitation - but I suspect it'll be sufficient for my relatively high output MC cartridge. Much of the appeal for me is size. It does no more than a preamp with a MC/MM cartridge input and headphone output. No line inputs. The price is also right: $200 MSRP, with $150 prices widely available. And it looks cool. (FYI: Cool Counts) So I've taken the plunge. If anyone else has an interest, I'll post impressions when I've received and installed.
  10. I bought my first Apple, a Apple II, or some such thing in college (1982). I learned to use a mouse on my IIc. That said, it's been a while. Haven't owned a computer in quite some time, though I usually find myself on Windows when I have one at my disposal (e.g., employer's computer, net cafe). I don't like Starbucks because, as I like to say, I want my grandkids to have a choice what coffee they drink. By extrapolation, you can guess how I feel about Microsoft/Windows. I preferred Beta too.
  11. ← Sorry if you took my comment as even SLIGHTLY serious. Perhaps I chose the wrong smiley. (sarcastic?) And yet, as I write this, I'm not sure how serious your reply was.
  12. Anytime I hear the term "Mac users", I feel like someone's really stretching the use of the plural. I mean, what are there, five of you guys?
  13. Appreciate advice received in '04. Heading back for a longer stay. Any updates or new info? Thanks.
  14. Update anyone? I'm running low on drool. Not available (yet) for pre-order at CD Universe.
  15. Tribute to Cannonball, already mentioned, is indeed a good one. A couple of others: Anthropology on Black Lion is a late-era date that captures some really high-energy playing. Early material now reissued on Classics is great. Second-tier, but still fine stuff: Bird's 'Birth of Bop' material - I suppose Byas' contributions could be called incidental, but the music is essential and Byas' recordings with Basie (can't go wrong with The Count)
  16. http://f.chtah.com/i/9/276579820/borderscoupon_704.html 25% on one CD thru 11 July.
  17. Can't seem to find either of the Smiths at CD Universe, other than as imports. Am I missing something?
  18. Plain steel-cut oats. No milk (vegetarian). A little water and, when my sweet tooth aches, a few raisins. Oh yeah.
  19. Somewhere out there is a recording where Jon Hendricks sings impressions of various bass players (Chambers, Mingus, et al.) Unfortunately, my music is 8,000 miles and 6 months away. But someone is probably familiar with this. I suppose the focus of the distinctions made between bassists is on ideas, rather than sound/tone.
  20. Zoot Sims - or so he relates in a story once told
  21. Record, heck I'm on a Mosaic (Select). I'm in the audience on the Dex Select. I'm on a few recordings (playing) that, with any luck, have been lost to the sands of time.
  22. Since I'm homeless, I can confidently answer "no". On the other hand... My name is BeBop and sometimes I start new threads at Organissimo without thoroughly researching whether or not existing threads adequately cover the intended topic. As a result I CREATE CLUTTER. Sorry, off the soapbox now, Unk.
  23. First show, for sure. Second? PMed you.
  24. Ticket to see Ernie Krivda at Sweet Rhythm tonight.
