  1. For a thread entitled "Box sets to avoid", I sure haven't seen many warnings! I guess we're all positive thinkers here.
  2. Supersax - Plays Bird
  3. Never noticed this smilie before. And now, it seems absolutely made for the topic:
  4. To each his/her own. Me? Can't STAND the stuff. Soap is a pretty good description, says my taste bud.
  5. I hope I'm not contributing to the delinquency of any (bin) miners.
  6. The local New Times Newspapers publications (East Bay Express and SF Weekly) have two dollar off coupons on their back pages this week. Minimum purchase is $2.99. Beats the dollar off coupons in the Oakland phone book, I suppose.
  7. Smokin' indeed. Recommended, especially for those needing something stronger than morning caffeine.
  8. I believe Jaki Byard also played piano. (...in addition to saxophone and trumpet) And Herbie Mann and Sam Most both play(ed) a nice tenor sax, in addition to flute. Than again, flute/sax doubling isn't much of a novelty.
  9. Ya heard of H*ll? Older than that. Heck, I've got reeds older than you, my friend. No lie.
  10. Welcome indeed! I remember when I was 17... Okay, not really.
  11. I used to carry a pocket watch on a chain. It swung.
  12. So, what do you want, an accurate watch or a syncopated one?
  13. I've got several of the Montreux 'jams': OP? Benny Carter? Joe Pass? (Sorry, they're not with me.) The Basie's the only one I remember fondly (non-Montreux, as I recall.)
  14. The Duke has been priced at around $900 when I've seen it. Then again, it's not OOP.
  15. I haven't seen the Bird in a while, and the Miles may have reached the end of its 999 unit run. The Duke Ellington is still around.
  16. If this includes the "Basie Jam"s, I'd answer "yes".
  17. Can you sue someone for that? More relevantly, can I buy insurance against being the defendant in such a suit? I know, it's going to COST me.
  18. hehe BeBop, Are you in Reno? No, not in Reno. Or anywhere else for that matter. I travel. 365 nights a year in hotels, all over the world. I hit Reno from time to time. Roseville too. Rabat, Rio, Riyadh, Rotterdam, Riga, Reykjavik, Rawalpindi, Rangoon...
  19. ...y'all have been a great resource in the past. When I was in California a while back, I hit someone on the freeway from the rear. Am I automatically at fault, 100% According to the insurance companies involved, it's 'yes'. Doesn't matter that she was parked on the freeway, at night, in the rain, with her lights off (despite the fact that her car functioned perfectly and she was just lost - looking for the bus depot). What happened to negligence? I even posed the question (hypothetical) 'what if someone deliberately pulled in front of me and stopped to CAUSE an accident?'. The answer: if you hit him/her from the rear, you're 100% at fault. Wow. Metaphorical whiplash!

    Feb 15 RVGs

Got 'em. Every darned one of 'em. And paid too much (in retrospect) for 'em too.
  21. You're kidding, right? Okay, I'm kidding. Reno's basically got one store (other than the ubiquitous Barnes and Noble) Recycled Records 4930 S. Virginia St., 826-4119; 812 N. Virginia St., 322-4644 There's also the disappointing, IMHO Soundwave CDs 971 W. Moana Lane, 825-5044 You might also want to check out the local freebie paper for occasional jazz events. Maybe. http://www.newsreview.com/issues/reno/2004-12-30/default.asp
  22. As the moniker implies, I grew up in a relatively straight/trad bebop existence, sans organ, sans grease. So, I got through my formative/record buying years oblivious to this bastardization of the piano (KIDDING!). And yet, I find I've got 8 of the ten on the original list. So get with it, people! Spinning right now - placed in motion before I even opened Organissimo for the day - Jacquet with Jimmy McGriff/Willd Bill Davis. Oh yeah, Sweet Georgia Brown. Next up will be a taste of Milt Buckner - nice guy, whatever you think of his organ playing. (Again, with Jacquet..another nice cat.) By the way, the Organissimo CD was the only one I bought in 2003. Surely that must count for something.
  23. It's that time of year. Everyone's posting Top 10s, and I've seen a few Bottom 10 lists too. So what are your Middle 10 of the year? (I suppose I could list the one recording I bought during the year as Top, Middle and Bottom.)

    LP to MP3

I've got a few (thousand) LPs, some of which I would like to convert to MP3 or similar digital fomat for storage/transport on a portable device. I could: record the LPs onto a computer hard drive, edit as necessary, convert to MP3, then download to portable device. record the LPs to CD Audio-RW using component CD recorder (which I already have) then onto portable device. I have no desire to keep the music on CD-R; the RW format would allow me to more easily fix my missed track separator cues. Other options/suggestions?

Anyone heard an anticipated issue date for the upcoming Willie Anderson/"Detroit Jazz Before Motown, 1945-53"?
