  1. If this includes the "Basie Jam"s, I'd answer "yes".
  2. Can you sue someone for that? More relevantly, can I buy insurance against being the defendant in such a suit? I know, it's going to COST me.
  3. hehe BeBop, Are you in Reno? No, not in Reno. Or anywhere else for that matter. I travel. 365 nights a year in hotels, all over the world. I hit Reno from time to time. Roseville too. Rabat, Rio, Riyadh, Rotterdam, Riga, Reykjavik, Rawalpindi, Rangoon...
  4. ...y'all have been a great resource in the past. When I was in California a while back, I hit someone on the freeway from the rear. Am I automatically at fault, 100% According to the insurance companies involved, it's 'yes'. Doesn't matter that she was parked on the freeway, at night, in the rain, with her lights off (despite the fact that her car functioned perfectly and she was just lost - looking for the bus depot). What happened to negligence? I even posed the question (hypothetical) 'what if someone deliberately pulled in front of me and stopped to CAUSE an accident?'. The answer: if you hit him/her from the rear, you're 100% at fault. Wow. Metaphorical whiplash!

    Feb 15 RVGs

Got 'em. Every darned one of 'em. And paid too much (in retrospect) for 'em too.
  6. You're kidding, right? Okay, I'm kidding. Reno's basically got one store (other than the ubiquitous Barnes and Noble) Recycled Records 4930 S. Virginia St., 826-4119; 812 N. Virginia St., 322-4644 There's also the disappointing, IMHO Soundwave CDs 971 W. Moana Lane, 825-5044 You might also want to check out the local freebie paper for occasional jazz events. Maybe. http://www.newsreview.com/issues/reno/2004-12-30/default.asp
  7. As the moniker implies, I grew up in a relatively straight/trad bebop existence, sans organ, sans grease. So, I got through my formative/record buying years oblivious to this bastardization of the piano (KIDDING!). And yet, I find I've got 8 of the ten on the original list. So get with it, people! Spinning right now - placed in motion before I even opened Organissimo for the day - Jacquet with Jimmy McGriff/Willd Bill Davis. Oh yeah, Sweet Georgia Brown. Next up will be a taste of Milt Buckner - nice guy, whatever you think of his organ playing. (Again, with Jacquet..another nice cat.) By the way, the Organissimo CD was the only one I bought in 2003. Surely that must count for something.
  8. It's that time of year. Everyone's posting Top 10s, and I've seen a few Bottom 10 lists too. So what are your Middle 10 of the year? (I suppose I could list the one recording I bought during the year as Top, Middle and Bottom.)

    LP to MP3

I've got a few (thousand) LPs, some of which I would like to convert to MP3 or similar digital fomat for storage/transport on a portable device. I could: record the LPs onto a computer hard drive, edit as necessary, convert to MP3, then download to portable device. record the LPs to CD Audio-RW using component CD recorder (which I already have) then onto portable device. I have no desire to keep the music on CD-R; the RW format would allow me to more easily fix my missed track separator cues. Other options/suggestions?

    Uptown

Anyone heard an anticipated issue date for the upcoming Willie Anderson/"Detroit Jazz Before Motown, 1945-53"?

    Wardell. Yes.
  12. Great record. Someone should pick this up!
  13. Peace, friends.
  14. Gain weight Squander more money Hey, I set my goals in the 'achievable' range.
  15. Have a great one. Draft, if necessary.
  16. Let me be the first to say... Oh well, I'll have to settle for twenty-fifth. Happy Birthday!
  17. I asked for World peace. And look what I got.
  18. Peace and happiness to all. BeBop (Manila)
  19. Obviously, I was being a bit flip (I'll bet Flip has a nice version too...) It's just a great song with many great versions. Wardell played it about a million times - half a million with Benny Goodman. And I'm just a Gray hound at heart. Another nice one (IMHO) 'Deed I Do. Wardell didn't play that.
  20. Wardell Gray, Hollywood/Pasadena, April 1947. Actually two versions. I prefer the live. That's it. Question settled. You're welcome.
  21. I'm not convinced. I too am a jazz-aholic. Yet I buy no recorded music (anymore). I play and I listen to live music...and of course those recordings I obtained many years ago. In my opinion, y'all are CD-aholics or LP-aholics or... Jazz has many other manifestations; recordings are not - strictly speaking - a necessity. Nothing wrong with being a CD- or LP-aholic. And I know my opinion is the outlier. But I figured I'd share. Thanks for indulging me.

  23. As promised, I pulled this out last night. Thankfully, only one mumblin' number ("Never"); the rest is enjoyable, if predictible, material. The band appears to be having fun.
  24. Ain't y'all 'down' with the Dn'B thang? (Drum n' Bass)
  25. I'm not much for the mumblin' schtick, so it doesn't do all that much for me. But Terry is always an interesting player. I'll pull this out tonight for a fresh listen. It's been quite a while.
