  2. I haven't heard the album, but if the Seattle shows supporting it are any indication (albeit with a bit less band freedom) it seems like this would be a good one, at least for people with more love for vocals than I happen to have. (That's a compliment with no "backhanded" implied.)
  3. Late to the party, but best wishes from ol' BeBop too.
  4. I want to see this one: http://detroitmusichistory.com/W_Anderson.pdf <<(Willie) Anderson’s recordings have never been reissued and, like Anderson, were popular only in Detroit. Had he chosen to make the move to Manhattan with Gillespie, Hawkins or Goodman this article would be unnecessary. Most of his recordings will be included in a forthcoming CD compilation on Uptown Records – Detroit Jazz Before Motown, 1945–53: Rare and previously unissued recordings featuring Wardell Gray, Barry Harris, Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Burrell, Willie Anderson and others. Lars and I hope a worldwide audience will hear and appreciate Willie Anderson. He deserves a place in the pantheon of great Detroit pianists.>> C'mon Uptown!
  5. If I'm ever reunited with my collection for a long-enough period... I'd worked with Coover Gazdar a bit before he passed...just before we were to get together again on this project at an IAJRC convention. I know he'd have wanted me or someone to carry on, but for me, it just became impossible.
  6. Hmmmmm. What's meant by the "Africa" comment? (Sorry, I'm genuinely stumped.) I've been to almost every contry in Africa, except "Disney" Africa (safari countries and tourist-friendly). I've had ample opportunity to be busy or do nothing.
  7. Doing nothing - even watching television or a movie or sitting on a beach - would kill me. Painfully.
  8. One of the site's creators, Professor Varden, is also the keeper of the great Fats Navarro website. Still work to be done on the Gray site - he advises and you will quickly discover - but it's a nice start and deserved tribute.
  9. "3" owners unite! Really great value cars.
  10. Have a great birthday!
  11. Happy Birthday, Jim. Hope you made it out of Seattle before the rain really set in again.
  12. The bad news/good news for me is that I'm going to have to/get to retire "early". And I'll be enjoying Boiled Shoestring Soup in my Golden Years.
  13. I'm not even sure what country to place myself in, but my "timesheet" for October 2007 through March 2012 shows 92 hours a week. Yeah, I'm lovin' life.
  14. I like Goold and Riley as two distinctive sounds on today's scene. If I can get a high-speed/listening connection, I'll have to "tune in".
  15. If your neighbour's gone amphibious I suspect it wasn't yellow balls in the blue sky but rather the prolonged absence of same. As for me, my second week in Seattle has turned "Seattle-normal" and I'm checking my toes for webbing.
  16. Hooked? Not me. I can quit anytime I want. My gateway was playing: junior high school stage band. Hefti/Basie charts.
  17. Gotta join the choir for a round of Happy Birthday to Chuck in one-part disharmony.
  18. I haven't heard it in a while, but New York Jazz Sextet - Group Therapy (Scepter) Art Farmer, James Moody, Tommy Flanagan, Tom McIntosh, Tootie Heath and (help me out here..) Richard Davis? 1965 or so.
  19. Shepp/NHOP "Looking at Bird" is relly a great album - my favorite post-1970 Shepp. You can sense his love for Bird, even though there's no emulation. NHOP swings.
  20. Janiva Magness, tomoow night at Jazz Alley, Seattle
  21. I'd have characterized Jessica Williams as the Keystone's house pianist, for many years. And Eddie Marshall as house drummer.
  22. Same experience here - no shrink wrap on individual CDs
  23. $5 off $25 Purchase through May 16
