  2. I'm a big money launderer. U.S. currency holds up pretty well. The monies of, say sub-Saharan Africa, not so well. (generalizing)
  3. Absolutely agree. A fundamentally honest book (I think), punctuated by apparent ornamental lies (exaggerations, et cetera)
  4. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01lt0nj 90 minutes.
  5. Thanks, Head Man and mjazzg. Even if I never come up with a minute (or a pound) for a show or shop, it's nice to know that Rays and Pizza Express and (of course) Ronnie Scotts are still out there...even if I'll miss Mole Jazz.
  6. I've got work in London that's been put off until the end of the Olympics...so I'm heading over this week. In my dreams (and probably only there, knowing my work) I'll have a small bit of time for something jazz-related (shop during the day - albeit with no intent to buy - or a show in the evening). Anything going on?
  7. My connections to all of this are odd, to say the least. I took an interest in high end audio in the 70s. Met/befriended a lot of the luminaries. Spend some time working "adjacent to" (not "for") Sony/Phillips on the original CDP-101 CD Player (back when it was anticipated that the CD would aspire to quality sound from the git-go). I've written about the industry, and was involved in the first CAS show, and twenty or more years of its predecessors in California audio-focused shows. But I don't subscribe to the hype and would no more spend the sums demanded here than I would play the lottery - money wasted in either case. Not all of the "connoisseurs" have lost touch with the music side - isn't that what's all about? - in favor of the toy-of-the-week obsession, but...
  8. I don't know whether to claim surprise or not, but I have found many offers and, ultimately, a "home" for this one. Thanks for comments and interest.
  9. Once upon a time, I'd thought this great CD was actively sought-after (and pricey and scarce). Not sure that's the case any more. I did spot a copy in a shop for reasonable (about US$8, I think). If anyone's looking for it, I could pick it up and ship. Can't buy it for myself and haul it around indefinitely.
  10. "Doggie Doo". Rock on, RD!
  11. Absolutely all the best! (Send a bit of that heat over to Brussels. Actually, I'd like some Miles too.)
  12. I don't download, but I do want to hear samples (at least of really unfamiliar stuff), including samples of things not available other than on CD. So this is a bummer for me.
  13. Belated best wishes for 2012. And early "best" for 2013!
  14. ...And Seattle's Best got bought by S****ucks.
  15. I love the ING on Manhattan (58th and 3rd, give or take?). Hard to get a brewed cup of Peet's outside California, Boston, Chicago (Evanston) and a few other company-owned spots. I've been to the INGs in Los Angeles, Honolulu, outside Minneapolis and Philadelphia, but they don't all have Peet's.
  16. First off, I've nothing against private equity, per se. I'm a 40-plus year Peet's guy (having received my first retail cup of coffee from Alfred Peet himself). So, when they went public, I bought a few shares, and was proud to be a (tiny, tiny) owner. I'm a bit sad to lose a Bay Area company that meant a lot to "The Locals". But business happens. Peet's Coffee & Tea, Inc. to Be Acquired by Joh. A. Benckiser for $73.50 Per Share in Cash Peet's to Become Private in a Transaction Valued at $1 Billion EMERYVILLE, Calif. --(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Peet's Coffee & Tea, Inc. (NASDAQ: PEET) and Joh. A. Benckiser ("JAB") today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which JAB will acquire Peet's for $73.50 per share in cash, or a total of approximately $1 billion . The agreement, which has been unanimously approved by the Peet's Board of Directors, represents a premium of approximately 29% over Peet's closing stock price on July 20, 2012 . At the close of the transaction, Peet's will be privately owned and will continue to be operated by the company's current management team and employees. Peet's Coffee & Tea, founded in Berkeley, CA in 1966 by Alfred Peet , will remain based in the San Francisco Bay Area , with its home office in Emeryville and its LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certified roast-to-order facility in Alameda. "We are very excited about this next chapter in Peet's rich history," said Patrick O'Dea, President and CEO of Peet's. "Over many years we've demonstrated an unyielding commitment to craft coffees and teas of uncompromised quality. This commitment is what has distinguished the Peet's brand among all others and will continue to guide us as we go forward."
  17. Birthday best, Joel.
  18. We'll disagree on this thenn mjzee. I think it's Mosaic's business decision to define their community. If they want to limit an offer to people who are previous customers or who have agreed to share xontact information, not offer discounts to everyone, that should be their choice. If I thought they were selling at a loss (loss leaders) it would bother me more.
  19. So much for a "members of the Mosaic Records community"-only promo.
  20. Check your e-mail for promo code.
  21. All the best, Tom!
  22. Norway? Mid-July? I'd say "party 'til the sun goes down!" Do enjoy your day.
  23. All the happiest, EKE!
  24. Enjoy your birthday!
  25. I'd like to know the backstory on that one (even if I suspect more than a little tongue-in-cheekiness). Toronto's got a decent jazz radio station and a fine performance scene. Thanks for sharing. My wife will enjoy it.
