Happy Birthday!

As a stanch Conservative, I'm in favor. (Looks the same on my mobile device.)

Right up there with Jackie Mac, white or black?

Chicago's a great place, so you SHOULD be looking forward to it. That said, it's been a couple of decades since I lived there, and I'm still getting some of the cold out of my bones. Are you planning to play in Chicago? If so, let us know when/where. At least let me know. It was nice seeing you at Andy's a few years back.

Have a great birthday, JoeG!

Is this one of those "horse shoes and hand grenades" things? I lived in Clovis, but not Fresno; Wasco, but never Hanford or Bakersfield; Porterville and Tulare, not Visalia; Encino not Los Angeles; Fountain Hills, AZ, not Phoenix; I wasn't in Louisville all that long; Kiev, but Chernobyl was off-limits by the time I got there; probably no closer than 100km from Kabwe; Sukinda looks kinda close to Calcutta, but...; Dzerzhinsk surely isn't as close to Moskva as it appears. Yep, I'm feeling like a lucky boy for having dodged all those bullets.

Are there any box bargains currently available?
BeBop replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Just to close the loop here, J&R really came through. I re-ordered. I was too lazy to call (and out of the country), so I wasn't worried about the five bucks. But they adjusted the price and I got the original order price without lifting a finger. I'm not much of a shopper, but I'll be dropping by when I'm in New York next week. Support the good 'uns. -

I've got the two Konitz/Broadbents. Then again, I'm a fiend for sax duos. (Also have Broadbent's Concord live session with Gary Foster. Nice.) The Konitz/Broadbents are nice because Konitz plays well and Broadbent avoids straight comp-ing, so it's more interplay-ful. -
Sunday afternoon, that was beginning to feel like swinging on a jackhammer. And so, on to... Rein de Graff - Drifting on a Reed (Timeless) Much better fit for my mood.

Cap'n John Handy with Claude Hopkins (RCA)

I mainly remember him from the recordings with (Rahsaan) Roland Kirk. I'll have to pull out a couple of those. I've only got them on LP, so I don't hear them often these days. Some must be on my Complete Mercury set (CD).

Wishing you a GREAT one!

Thank you Chuck and others. I'm away from my collection and posted a few favorites, but there are many good ones I didn't think of. Some of the Monk, the Hampton Hawes (!), Charles Tolliver, Stanley Cowell's Brilliant Circles, Dollar Brand, Mal Waldron, Teddy Wilson, Oscar Pettiford, Art Ensemble, Bud Powell (obviously I'm reading off my MP3 player now) and good Brew Moore, a Cliff Jackson that I love,

Thanks. FWIW, J&R currently has free shipping on $25+ and a bunch of RVGs @ $5.99. I broke down and ordered the Waldron set fron J&R. The order got cancelled without any explanation. Too good to be true, I suppose. I ordered three "free shipping" boxes from J & R over an 8-day period ending Sunday 4/15. [Edited] Received the Waldron, first one ordered. The second one has shipped. The third one wound up getting cancelled - initial e-mail was a little weird, but after further investigation it appears to be a simple case of "out of stock". I do notice, however, that the "new price" for "forward delivery" (4/30 or later) is some $6 higher than the price of my cancelled order... I sent an e-mail to their customer service about the cancel and upcharge. The reply calmed me a bit: Thank you for your email. The item was cancelled from your order because it is sold out when your order was filled and we do not backorder CDs or DVDs. We do not warehouse CDs and DVDs as they are housed on the selling floor of our NYC store. Titles shown as in stock on our website are not necessary in stock but rather are current titles which we may still obtain from our many different distributors. We will certainly honor the lower price of the same item. Please call us to place the order and reference order number XXXXXX. We apologize for any inconvenience. We truly appreciate the time you took to write to us and hope that we have addressed your concerns. If we may be of further assistance, please call us at 1(800) 426-6027 or 718-340-0397. Monday through Friday from 9am to 6pm Eastern, Saturday 9-5, or write to us again. Thank you. -
Happy Birthday!

This link is to MusicDirect, though I'm sure these are available elsewhere. Black Lion had some really nice stuff that isn't in this batch (Wardell Gray, Frank Lowe, "Kenny Dorham" 52nd Street, Ben Webster other than the one listed here...some, I guess with suspicious provenance.) We can hope. And we can hope for down-to-Earth prices, maybe (?) $50? Ouch.

Says CNN, though no details yet. A real icon from my youth.

I was first exposed to him through those West Coast recordings with Wardell. Nice stuff. Sad to hear (assuming true).

Yes, Valerie. Record Surplus moved from a spot they had on Pico forever. It was a big two floor warehouse full of pretty good, but usually picked-over stuff at reasonable prices. I haven't been to the new location, but it's probably worth a visit, unless your tastes run toward the non-mainstream. They may have a heap of really cheap stuff, uncategorized. There are still stores opening here and there (Oakland, Salt Lake City) but they usually don't offset the losses.

Amen. Records stores for me were THE source of discovery. Conerts, from time to time, might send me a new direction. But there was nothing like sitting around, spinning LPs with Rick Ballard, Berigan Taylor, Tom Madden for finding something new. Now, we've got sound samples, YouTube, this forum; then, we didn't even have the internet. Or computers. Ah, good old days. Another Amen. I can recall a great conversation about Berkeley (and all things American) as I fished kroner from my pocket...and ultimately, my wife's purse. Big ol' picture of Bud on the wall.

May your birthday joy be undiminished.
