  1. I'm glad aloc started this thread. Without getting too analytical about it, I'd say that seven of my ten favorite songs have been named. (No accounting for taste...and I'm not satying whether I mean "my taste" or that of "the person who doesn't like X" ) If nothing else, I'm going to have to rethink some future set lists.
  2. Happy birthday from your VERY old friend! All the best for the year.
  3. Sorry I missed you as a donor, jazzmoose. No slight intended. Reading the Org boards on my phone* makes me prone to oversights. Apologies to ANYONE I missed. * computer croaked. No money for a new one right now.
  4. Pop standards, to be more correct, I s'pose. Playing: Night and Day Listening: Alfie
  5. As much as I like levity, some topics will always hit a raw nerve with me, so I can absolutely relate to Dave James' post. But hey, since you dropped into the thread, consider joining GoodSpeak and me as registered organ donors.
  6. Well, I've no-showed a few. I've also had a few cancel after I'd booked the ticket (especially sad Eddie Jefferson). I went to a Hank Jones / Tommy Flanagan concert and ended up with solo piano. I saw Chet Baker, horn-less. Strange I can't remember more. Most of them were decades ago when concerts were just about daily events and jazz had more players with (hate to use the term) "demons".
  7. Are you talking about this label? I have the Shepp and a Dexter Gordon and a Chet Baker on the label...as well as some others I can't remember. I assume that's the label. Maybe this is a better link.
  8. A very happy birthday to you, Kyo!
  9. FWIW, I really like that Jessica Williams recording. The title track - one of Jessica's own - should be a standard.
  10. "Kind of Mobley"? What kind of crap is this?
  11. Excluding shows where I performed, and including only shows I paid to see (e.g., no street performers, "jazz, wine and art festivals") I'd say: - one a week in high school - five a week when I was in college/early career - three a week until about 2007 - during the recent economic/financial troubles, maybe one a month, Maybe.
  12. You're lucky. This is when they usually start counting our the five dollar bills they're going to give me.
  13. I hope it's a great one.
  14. Isn't circumventing the paywall kind of like illegally downloading music? Hey, just asking.
  15. Give me a minute to find my glasses.
  16. I've got clients in Santa Clara, San Jose, Mountain View and Palo Alto, so I see these things on the roads pretty frequently. It's sad, but I've ceased being amazed by technology, there's just so much out there. I do rather like the idea of piloting my own car, manual transmission and all.
  17. 15% off at Amoeba.com thru March 23rd - ENTER PROMO CODE SPRING15 AT CHECKOUT
  18. I'm not willing to whore myself out for $5 (i.e., give personal information, consent to be tracked, be on a mailing list, be sold to other mailing lists, agree to receive spam on the basis of "a prior business relationship") Ten bucks, maybe.
  19. Sorry to hear about your Uncle. Hopefully you were still able to enjoy your birthday - otherwise, you'll just have to enjoy the remaing 364 days this year. I've gotten to be pretty much on the airport to Metro shuffle. (I do Dulles and the Metro 5A, but same thing, conceptually.) The Metro is still one of the good things about the DC area. It works.
  20. In general, I head to Little Five Points for: Moods Music, 1131 Euclid Criminal Records, 1154 Euclid Wax n' Facts, 432 Moreland Satellite, 447 Moreland (all within about a block) Wuxtry, 2096 N Decatur Decatur CD is pretty good, if you're near Decatur. 356 West Ponce de Leon

I think of it this way, I would definitely rather hear bassoon in jazz than bagpipes (particularly by a guy who wasn't really in control of the instrument) and I don't really want to hear bassoon in jazz. Just saying... I'm with you on the bassoon. Oboe, on the other hand.... I buried my old Pacific Jazz stuff long ago.

You could always sample the MP3s at Amazon or iTunes. Worst case, it's not like this is hugely hard to find, if you redecide.

Agree on this part. Perhaps I'm just too (something), but I really tire quickly listening to Western music on non-chromatic instruments. So when Harley's substituting a major scale tone (say a third), when I minor scale tone is in the composed melody, it's cringe and flee time.
