Benny Golson in Indpls. Friday night
sheldonm replied to ghost of miles's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
So, that was you with the T-shirt. If I had seen the thread before the show, I would have introduced myself. Maybe we will meet next time. Yes, the show was great. I heard some of the same stories/jokes before, but they were still entertaining. As jazzdaddy wrote, the first tune was "Horizon Ahead". I think he also played "What is This Thing Called Love?" and "Beautiful Love" from the movie "The Mummy". There may have been others, but I don't remeber. ....ah, I knew there were some we missed! -

Benny Golson in Indpls. Friday night

Ah, hell.... I guess I can't wear mine now. Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend; I have a prior commitment. Darn! It sounds like a great show. Be sure to fill us in on all of the details. Hope you guys have fun. Golson was excellent, as was the local rhythm section of Bryson Kern on drums, Luke Gillespie on piano and Jack Helsley on bass. The band played for probably 1 1/2 hours or maybe more; played Stablemates, I remember Clifford, Mr. PC and many others I can't recall this morning; plus a couple of blues tunes. Ghost or JazzMessenger may be able to help with additional titles as they were both in attendance. Made lots of photographs but had permission to shoot during the first two tunes; luckily each were about 15 minutes long! Went backstage for a bit after the show and talked to Benny. He was preparing to do a Q/A with a handful of college students. I'll post some photos from the event in a couple days. While we were talking, a man came up and gave Benny a note that said Max Roach has been moved into a nursing home and wasn't doing well . Mark -

sheldonm replied to B. Goren.'s topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I've seen Buddy a few times and as recently as September and I feels his playing is still very good; one of the all time greats on clarinet. I wouldn't miss it! Mark -
No disrespect taken ! Thanks for the clarification; an oversight on my part! I'll see what I can do on the Unissued Beehive. Mark

The latest Crouch controversy
sheldonm replied to The Mule's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Basically, he put on a turban, changed his name to Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, shot a sheriff's deputy, and landed in jail for life. Nice! -
Mike, How can I link to this? Mark

Thanks AB!

The store behind this photo is a magician from Michigan had seen Golson some time before and thought he would make him this "sax" out of balloons. I was photographing Golson an hour or so before the show playing the piano when this guy came in to present Benny with his art. I asked Benny if I could make a photograph or two, which he was cool with. He also pulled it (balloon sax) out during the performance, which got a big laugh from the crowd! Mark

Ghost, Just got off the phone with the venue; they are attempting to let me photograph but Benny's manager is draggin' his feet. I'll be at the show for sure but we'll see on the photographs. I was invited to sit through an interview someone else is doing with him after the show; should be interesting! Are you going to make it? Mark

Gene Deitch
sheldonm replied to sheldonm's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Here's the cover of his book! -
There was conversation on this BB some months ago about Cartoonist/Author Gene Deitch. I wanted to share a piece of art he made for me about a year ago. I contacted him a couple years ago and traded correspondences with him for awhile, very nice and funny man! He has a great coffee table book out called "Cat on a Hot Thin Groove", which shows all the "Record Changer" magazine covers and cartoons that he drew for them and some amusing stories. I asked him if he would draw a cartoon using his original "cat" character photographing a jazz musician. I am a photographr and photograph about 100 shows per year, so I thought it would be something pretty cool! I was shocked when he agreed to do it, as he's reached 80th year. Mark

17 is the exact sum; I just counted my stash!!! I talk to Jim about cds everyweek; maybe one of these days he will say yes!!!! I forgot to ask him if he has any inventory left. I know he has copies of "The Beehive Session" which was pressed on red vinyl. If anyone is interested in that, I could see if he'll part with a few for a reasonable cost.
