  1. Please identify the specific bands/records which identified "soul jazz ... right from the start in the '40s". The early leaders were mainly tenor players: Illinois Jacquet, without whom there would have been no honkers; Gene Ammons; Ammons/Stitt (though half or maybe more of Stitt's career is Bebop); Arnett Cobb; Ike Quebec; Big Jay McNeely; Paul Williams; Willis "Gator Tail" Jackson; Hal "Cornbread" Singer; Wild Bill Moore; Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis (first tenor/organ records in '49). Other big names included Tiny Grimes & his Rockin' Highlanders. Among vocalists, Dinah was the Queen. In the early '50s, there was Wild Bill Davis and other pre-Smith organists like Milt Buckner & Bill Doggett. MG None of these people played "soul jazz" as the term is used. I'm not at all disputing that there is a continuum from those you mention to soul jazz as the term has been applied (by everyone I know save yourself). You might want to call those folks "pre-soul jazz". This is also the view of Bob Porter, a man whose views on this subject are not to be sneezed at, I reckon. MG Bob Porter is never wrong about anything....just ask him!!!
  2. Damn, that's crazy! Although I don't really know Margurite that well, I've met her several times and certainly associate her with Hot House. Hopefully this will be worked out soon and she will be back in place. I love Hot House!!! m~

  5. Bebop, Not to worry as I'm sure most of the comments regarding hookers were all in fun and not to be taken seriously! ~Mark
  6. Bebop, No problem with your post, very useful indeed. To keep with the levity of the thread, you would need to post something on hookers! . m~
  7. I'm not sure Lena is able to jump much at her advanced age but I wanted to pass along my Birthday wishes to Lon as well!!!! ~Mark

  16. It's interesting that if you go to the link above, they have another link to the current contributors.....they appear to be the musicians that played on the recordings and the others that have offered moral support. I will go on record as saying that I will offer my moral support as well. I guess I expected to see the ones who have contributed monetary support as that's basically what they are looking for. BTW, I love these recordings!!! m~
  17. ...agree with Chuck!
  18. I love Magic Sam....seeing this post has made me throw on "Black Magic", his late 1968 date on Delmark; wonderful recording! m~
  19. Jason Curry quartet with Ameen Saleem on bass, Quincy Davis on drums and Miki Hayama on piano....Jazz Kitchen/Indy.
  20. I finally got my first order of 20 yesterday....only three plus weeks to get them.
  21. I was waiting for someone to mention this. IMO, 8 out of 10 marriages fail when one of the spouses is cheating. Soul-searching or not, odds are your former spouse was porking someone before the marriage went south. I've had some married lovers, but noone divorced because of me, I think. Immoral perhaps, but I was in my early to mid twenties, single and had my own apartment. If anything I was being preyed upon by the unfaithful wives. At least I got to fulfill my "older woman" fantasy. So the women tempted you? Sounds right out of Genesis. It's a total cop-out, Dmitry. Sleeping with someone else's spouse, besides being wrong, is a betrayal of the woman's husband. Where is the brotherhood that men seem to be so proud of having? Patricia, I'll let you in on a little secret - the brotherhood bylaws are automatically suspended the instant the nipple shows its little smiling face. Furthermore, here's a Georgia Peach commemorative quarter, go buy yourself a little sense of humor. ...now that's funny!
