If you do decide to head up this way and want more suggestions let me know. I could try to find the contact info for Nectar's, if you are looking for the complete old-school Phish vibe. Possibly the FlynnSpace, too, but their website lists rental fees, which is probably not what you were hoping to see. -
I have to agree w/ Joe Christmas on this one. Caddy is a fine album, but nothing great. I never hear that spark, know what I mean. It is a solid, middle of the road Mobley album. Not anywhere near his best work but not worth getting rid of.

I was recently able to pick up sealed copies of Air Mail and Live Air. Other than the Nessa released Air Time I had never seen any of their discs for sale.

speaking of Peter Kowald (indirectly) and Brotz, I can't believe I forgot to recommend his most recent disc on Eremite - Never Too Late But Always Too Early, a live set w/ Drake and Parker recorded in Montreal in April of 2001. This set is dedicated to the memory of Kowald. This is a phenomenal set! 2 discs for $22 direct from Eremite.
-
great choices so far! a more modern recommendation - R.L. Burnside - Burnside on Burnside. This is my favorite disc of his right now.
-
impossible - thanks for the recommendations! I'll be checking out both bands soon. personally, I've been "discovering" a lot of new music recently. Cecil Taylor, for one. mostly his solo work. Up next is Art Pepper, who I have never heard before. I downloaded Straight Life, Meets the Rhythm Section, the Complete Village Vanguard and the Hollywood Allstar sets off of emusic, so i have a wealth of new material to explore. For non-jazz I've recently "discovered" King Sunny Ade and a band called SIANspheric, who are a nice mix of fuzzed-out noise mixed with My Bloody Valentine-ish drone mixed with some nice melodic sensibilities.

Harry Whitaker - Black Renaissance: Body, Mind and Spirit Tisziji Munoz - Divine Radiance (w/ Pharoah Sanders, Rashied Ali, Ravi Coltrane, Cecil Mcbee, Don Pate and...Paul Shaffer? I'm really not sure how the Late Night w/ Letterman bandleader is going to fit in with this band) Jaga Jazzist - The Stix Yo La Tengo - Summer Sun

Does anyone know where I can track down a copy of a disc called Light Blue: Schlippenbach Plays Monk on Enja? I've checked all my usual sources and it seems like this is quite an obscure album. thanks!

Well, if you enjoyed the bleeding and your ears falling off I would suggest listening to Machine Gun next, as it would be my choice for the essential early Brotz disc. FAS has gotten pretty much consistently positive reviews that I have seen. Other discs from that era that would be easy to pick up would be Balls, Nipples, More Nipples and F*ck De Boere. My personal recommendation would be to start with later Brotz. One of the Die Like a Dog discs with Hamid Drake and William Parker - Little Birds Have Fast Hearts 1 or 2, for example. Or the WELS concert on Okkadisc. The Dried Rat Dog, which is a duo disc w/ Hamid Drake is essential also. My top choice is unfortunately way OOP but worth tracking down if at all possible. Live at the Empty Bottle w/ Drake and Kent Kessler. This disc absolutely smokes!

Coltrane - Africa Brass disc 2 (I'm really digging the double bass on Africa and Elvin has never sounded better to my ears.) Italian Instabile Orchestra - Skies of Europe Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil Mingus - Mingus Three Clifford Brown - Complete BN disc 1 Yume Bitsu

In the past couple of days I grabbed the Complete Wes Montgomery Prestige set (12 discs), the Art Pepper Complete Village Vanguard set (8 discs) the Art Pepper Hollywood All Star Sessions (5 discs) along with a few random single discs (Screaming Headless Torsos for example) Not too shabby. I agree that the Desco label is well worth checking out. Beyond what Noj already mentioned I would recommend the Daktaris album Soul Explosion. Great Afrobeat!

Mny - what is your impression of this album? I am pretty sure I will be picking up a copy soon, but am curious about how the performance is. todays listening: Vienna Art Orchestra - Blues for Brahms Coltrane - Complete Africa / Brass Randy Weston - Saga Randy Weston - Marrakech in the cool of the evening Sianspheric - Somnium
