  1. Matthew Shipp - Nu Bop Wayne Shorter - Super Nova Orlando "Cachaito" Lopez - s/t Bill Evans - Last Waltz disc 5 The Daktaris - Soul Explosion
  2. The song: Mobley's This I Dig of You The cereal: Kellog's Sugar Smacks The reason?:
  3. The Associated Press is reporting that Elliott Smith has died of an apparent suicide. He was 34. I've only heard a few of his albums but I enjoyed the little that I experienced. Such a shame.
  4. Matthew Shipp's New Orbit John Patton - Blue John Wayne Shorter - Schizophrenia Woody Shaw - Little Red's Fantasy Gianluigi Trovesi Otteto - Fugace Black Uhuru - Chill Out Ozric Tentacles - Strangeitude
  5. some other choices would be Donald Byrd's Mustang!, Blackjack and the Creeper. I have never heard the Creeper, but really dig the other two discs. Or how about Bobby Hutcherson's Live at Montreux? That one commands huge prices on ebay these days and deserves to be readily accesible. Some smoking Woody Shaw on this set! I'll second Bev's James Newton selection.
  6. Not necessarily. Birth of the Cool was not originally engineered by Rudy yet was issued as an RVG.
  7. oops. read your post too fast and missed this. heck, I'm going to leave my post because these discs deserve as much hype as they can get.
  8. Don Pullen / George Adams Quartet - Breakthrough and Song Everlasting I know that there is no chance these will ever be issues as RVGs but if these two discs are not "essential" then I don't know what is.
  9. I did a quick search and didn't see any threads on this. I've always enjoyed looking over people's end of year best of lists to see what might have slipped under my radar. I thoiught it would be interesting to list our facorite new releases and reissues of 2003. So far, I know that my list would include: New Releases (in no particular order): William Parker Violin Trio - Scrapbook Brotzmann / Parker / Drake - Never Too Late But Always Too Early Andrew Hill - Passing Ships Whit Dickey - Prophet Moon Daniel Carter and Rueben Radding - Luminescence Chris Washburne and the SYOTOS Band -- Paradise In Trouble Lunge - Strong Language Brad Shepik Trio - Drip Keith Jarrett - Up For It Gianluigi Trovesi Otteto - Fugace Reissues - Roscoe Mitchell - Snurdy McGurgy and Her Dancing Shoes Miles Davis - Complete Blackhawk Schlippenbach Trio - Pakistani Pomade I'm sure I will think of more as they year winds down.
  10. William Parker Violin Trio - Scrapbook Andrew Hill - Passing Ships Herbie Hancock - Empyrean Isles
  11. This is a great idea. We could also get in on the Ayler tree material as well. Where does one start? 1. find someone who already has these discs who is willing to burn at least one copy of each 2. find someone to administer the tree and burn copies for 2 or 3 people, each of whom will burn copies for 2 or 3 people That is really it. My burner is on the fritz, so I am SOL for right now, otherwise I would volunteer to head this up. I should have a working burner in a few weeks, so, if someone was able to provide the initial copies of the Miles discs (or the Ayler discs, or any other interesting live trees we could come up with) I would be happy to organize the whole deal and start distribution once I was back up and running again.
  12. Lester Young - Washington DC 1956 disc 1 John Patton - Along Came John Randy Weston - Marrakech in the Cool of the Evening Black Uhuru - Sinsemilla
  13. wow! I had never heard of this before. The next tree (1980's) doesn't interest me quite so much, but the "lost quintet" material sounds fascinating. Does anyone here have all of this material and would be willing to start an Organissimo "tree?" 12 discs is a lot to ask for but those setlists will have a LOT of people drooling!
  14. this line-up: this being the last show they performed before Shorter left the group.
  15. Have you heard the Springheel Jack discs on the Thirsty Ear Blue Series (Masses, Amassed and the live disc?) I think many people would argue that these are directly inspired by this period of Miles and its sound.
  16. I agree with Noj on this one. This was the only track I knew after the first listen. I wasn't sure of the track at first, but knew it was Guaraldi, which narrowed it down quite a bit. I'm still trying to close in on a few of the others. #3 definitely sounds like Miles to me, but I'm not sure which track.

  18. Berkshire Record Outlet has Spiral available on CD for $3.99. Hard to go wrong at that price. I would also recommend the Live in Montrux disc, also on Freedom, which I have seen available at Berkshire from time to time. There is also a nice live solo set available for free download on his website. All three of these would be easy and inexpensive ways to start exploring his work.
  19. Booker Ervin - Songbook John Patton - Accent on the Blues Monk - Live at the It Club Complete Monk - In Italy Wes Montgomery - Full House Art Pepper - Straight Life Black Uhuru - Red
  20. There is something about Garbarek's tone that I'm not really comfortable with...at times his playing almost seems "new agey" to me on this disc. That being said, I really dug this album and am thankful it was chosen as AOW. I also picked up Stenson's Serenity and War Orphans based on this AOW. Serenity has resonated the most with me, so far.
  21. ...and have you seen the crazy prices this thread has been getting on ebay????
  22. forget the RVG, JRVG or TOCJ, this thread simply has reversed polarity.
  23. A fairly obscure tribute to Spacemen 3, this disc is hit or miss, but does features some nice covers by Low, Mogwai, Bardo Pond and others.
  24. Air - Air Time John Patton - Memphis to New York Spirit Irakare - Babalu Aye Morphine - Yes Blindfold Test #3
  25. No apologies necessary...thank you for making this music available.
