Does anyone know where I can track down a copy of a disc called Light Blue: Schlippenbach Plays Monk on Enja? I've checked all my usual sources and it seems like this is quite an obscure album. thanks!

Well, if you enjoyed the bleeding and your ears falling off I would suggest listening to Machine Gun next, as it would be my choice for the essential early Brotz disc. FAS has gotten pretty much consistently positive reviews that I have seen. Other discs from that era that would be easy to pick up would be Balls, Nipples, More Nipples and F*ck De Boere. My personal recommendation would be to start with later Brotz. One of the Die Like a Dog discs with Hamid Drake and William Parker - Little Birds Have Fast Hearts 1 or 2, for example. Or the WELS concert on Okkadisc. The Dried Rat Dog, which is a duo disc w/ Hamid Drake is essential also. My top choice is unfortunately way OOP but worth tracking down if at all possible. Live at the Empty Bottle w/ Drake and Kent Kessler. This disc absolutely smokes!

Coltrane - Africa Brass disc 2 (I'm really digging the double bass on Africa and Elvin has never sounded better to my ears.) Italian Instabile Orchestra - Skies of Europe Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil Mingus - Mingus Three Clifford Brown - Complete BN disc 1 Yume Bitsu

In the past couple of days I grabbed the Complete Wes Montgomery Prestige set (12 discs), the Art Pepper Complete Village Vanguard set (8 discs) the Art Pepper Hollywood All Star Sessions (5 discs) along with a few random single discs (Screaming Headless Torsos for example) Not too shabby. I agree that the Desco label is well worth checking out. Beyond what Noj already mentioned I would recommend the Daktaris album Soul Explosion. Great Afrobeat!

Mny - what is your impression of this album? I am pretty sure I will be picking up a copy soon, but am curious about how the performance is. todays listening: Vienna Art Orchestra - Blues for Brahms Coltrane - Complete Africa / Brass Randy Weston - Saga Randy Weston - Marrakech in the cool of the evening Sianspheric - Somnium

I'll second the recommendation for Verge. They can be a bit slow sometimes but they have always come through on everything I have ordered. $22 Canadian is about $16 U.S., at current exchange rates, fwiw. Not a bad deal for FMPs.

Pakistani Pomade and Hunting the Snake are the two albums I have heard by him. Both are reissues on Atavistic's Unheard Music Series and readily available. Of the two I prefer Pomade. You can hear a sample off of HTS here: Atavistic sound clips

I agree that the Altschul is a great disc. I love the sly Braxton joke in the title, too. I think Woody Shaw might have the title for the most 32Jazz covers that make me go that one is not too bad Pirates of the Caribbean meets 1950's EC Horror Comics? from the "high school text book" school of cover art this one I kind of like.

pretty sure it has already been released, but I have yet to hear it. One Great Day and Kulak 29 & 30 are both favorites of mine. Both are great discs with the same trio (Andrea Parkins and Jim Black) as Arcanum. I also like The Sun Died, which is his tribute to artists such as Gene Ammons. It is a trio with Marc Ribot and Kenny Wollison released on Soul Note. Some people have issues with it due to the lack of bass, but I really dig the session.

they also recently added Drimala to the list of labels they offer. Discs with Matthew Shipp, William Parker and Joe McPhee are all available.

wait until BFrank sees this thread.... I've been using it for a few months now and have been very happy so far. It was worth the monthly cost for the box sets I have gotten alone. also, check out this thread: emusic thread

Coltrane - OM definitely one for when my wife is not home. Not an album I need to hear very often, but worth pulling out once a year or so. recently: Sunship, Living Space, First Meditations, Heavyweight Champion discs 1 &2 DKV Trio - Trigonometry

Drimala still has three sound clips up and working even though they are sold out of the set. www.drimala.com I also HIGHLY recommend grabbing a copy of this set while you still can.

I'm going to cheat and put a late 2002 disc down here. This will not be an easy disc to track down, unless you got o one of the musicians themselves. I got my copy at the Ray Anderson show last night: BassBrumBone - March of Dimes recorded live at the BIMhuis Sept. 26, 1997. Features Ray Anderson, Mark Helias and Gerry Hemingway. Great live set! Also, on the reissue front: Schlippenbach Trio - Pakistani Pomade Tim Berne - Fractured Fairy Tales
-
there are some great recommendations above...I will try to avoid any overlap. I'm not sure of your definition of "obscure," but none of these discs seem to get mentioned a lot around these parts: Brad Shepik - The Well Aldo Romano Quartet - Canzoni Romano, Sclavis, Texier - Suite Africaine Italian Instabile Orchestra - Litania Sibilante Billy Bang - Vietnam: the Aftermath BassDrumBone - March of Dimes Ray Anderson's Pocket Brass Band - Where Home Is

I loved going back and reading these lists over on JC when I first discovered the site. It quickly became very informative and very expensive. I found some great discs I would otherwise have missed this way. So far I haven't really heard too many 2003 cds, so it is going to be tough to come up with a list. The Brotz . Drake / Parker will definitely be up near the top...that set smokes! I still haven't heard the new Shorter...why didn't it work for you?

I was lucky enough to find a new copy of this disc for $12 in a store in Providence a few years back. I really enjoy it. If you are a serious fan of Patton's you will really dig it. back to the original subject: check out Luther Thomas' Funky Donkey on Atavistic's Unheard Music Series. This one definitely has the funky grease that you are looking for and is definitely a lot more "out" than the BN Rare Grooves mentioned below.
