I've spun this disc a few times and have been digging it more and more each time. Imagine the Italian Instabile Orchestra interpreting early 20th century American jazz with a dah of electronica thrown in. Great fun! I think a lot of people - not just fans of Italian jazz - would really enjoy this disc. The performances are exciting, the writing is fresh and the entire program is so joyful and exhuberant that I can't help but feel better after a few tracks. One of my top discs for 2003.

I didn't think I had ever heard Elliott Smith live, but one of my friends just reminded me that we saw him in 1995 opening up for Mary Lou Lord at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA. I hadn't realized that was him, as I wasn't aware of his music at the time. I enjoyed his set, but wish I could go back and see him with the fuller appreciation of his work that I have developed since.

The Associated Press is reporting that Elliott Smith has died of an apparent suicide. He was 34. I've only heard a few of his albums but I enjoyed the little that I experienced. Such a shame.

some other choices would be Donald Byrd's Mustang!, Blackjack and the Creeper. I have never heard the Creeper, but really dig the other two discs. Or how about Bobby Hutcherson's Live at Montreux? That one commands huge prices on ebay these days and deserves to be readily accesible. Some smoking Woody Shaw on this set! I'll second Bev's James Newton selection.

This is a great idea. We could also get in on the Ayler tree material as well. Where does one start? 1. find someone who already has these discs who is willing to burn at least one copy of each 2. find someone to administer the tree and burn copies for 2 or 3 people, each of whom will burn copies for 2 or 3 people That is really it. My burner is on the fritz, so I am SOL for right now, otherwise I would volunteer to head this up. I should have a working burner in a few weeks, so, if someone was able to provide the initial copies of the Miles discs (or the Ayler discs, or any other interesting live trees we could come up with) I would be happy to organize the whole deal and start distribution once I was back up and running again.

wow! I had never heard of this before. The next tree (1980's) doesn't interest me quite so much, but the "lost quintet" material sounds fascinating. Does anyone here have all of this material and would be willing to start an Organissimo "tree?" 12 discs is a lot to ask for but those setlists will have a LOT of people drooling!

Have you heard the Springheel Jack discs on the Thirsty Ear Blue Series (Masses, Amassed and the live disc?) I think many people would argue that these are directly inspired by this period of Miles and its sound.

I agree with Noj on this one. This was the only track I knew after the first listen. I wasn't sure of the track at first, but knew it was Guaraldi, which narrowed it down quite a bit. I'm still trying to close in on a few of the others. #3 definitely sounds like Miles to me, but I'm not sure which track.
