  1. Nate, I believe you're speaking of the album An Evening with The Ornette Coleman Trio. I have it on CD. It's out there as an import and I believe you're right about the string piece as I haven't listened to it in a while, but the rest of it is really good. The piece is called "Sounds & Forms For Wind Quintet".
  2. My favorite album is 1984's Too Tough To Die. E-e-e-en-n-d-d-d-less Vaca-a-a-a-tion & Wa-a-a-a-a-a-a-rt, WART HOG!
  3. Skies Of America is my favorite Ornette album.
  4. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The guitarist with pioneering punk rock band the Ramones is fighting a losing a battle with cancer in a Los Angeles hospital, Rolling Stone magazine reported on its Web site on Tuesday. Johnny Ramone, 55, whose real name is John Cummings, was diagnosed with prostate cancer four years ago, and it has now spread throughout his body, Rollingstone.com quoted the band's drummer, Marky Ramone, as saying. "Johnny's been a champ in confronting this, but at this point I think the chances are slim," Marky Ramone said in the report. "John never smoked cigarettes, he wasn't a heavy drinker and he was always into his health. It just proves when cancer seeks a body to penetrate, it doesn't matter how healthy you are or how unhealthy you are. It just seeps in and there's nothing you can do." The Ramones, famed for playing their high-energy, unpolished songs at breakneck speed, rose to fame in New York City in 1974, paving the way for such British punk rock icons as the Sex Pistols and the Clash. The band made its mark with such tunes as "Blitzkrieg Bop," "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue" and "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker," but it never achieved the same commercial success as acts that followed in its path. The Ramones officially retired in 1996. The band's singer, Joey Ramone (ne Jeff Hyman), died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer, while bassist Dee Dee Ramone (Douglas Colvin) died from a drug overdose the following year.
  5. I think I got you beat Brandon. I also had all the singles, but when the complete B-sides came out, I sold my singles so I could have them all on one cd and make a little more room for others cds.
  6. I picked this up today & just finished listening to it. Overall, very good. I was half listening during the first 4 songs so I have to listen again, but I kept waiting for a Lee Randaldo song(s). There's only one and it's song #8 called Paper Cup Exit. It's definitely good, but what was better, believe it or not, was the next song, a KIM GORDON SONG no less called I Love You Golden Blue. She sings in a breathy voice and the lyrics are good! The chorus is in a major key and works really well in contrast to the verses. The last song Peace Attack is really melodic also, that's a Thurston Moore song. Overall, I didn't hear a bad song. Pick this one up.
  7. I'll be buying it on Thursday. I've got all their regular albums (Geffen, that is and earlier ones). I think they were great through Dirty in 1992. Since then, it's been hit or miss, but I still loyally buy each album.
  8. Good luck to the best darn avatar maker there ever was! I will miss the ever changing Cat Shatner.
  9. I'm looking for 2 Rahsaan songs on cdr. Can anyone help? Thanks. Please PM. 1. Carney and Bigard Place (from A Meeting of the Times &, I think, Does Your House Have Lions comp) 2. Lunatic Danza (from Simmer, Reduce, Garnish & Serve comp)
  10. I saw a book at Borders very recently that dealt with all of the shows that this group has done. There is quite a few. There's a cartoon drawing of Vyvyans face on the cover. I think it's called That's Anarchy! Pretty interesting.
  11. Can't forget the bass riff in Cygnus X-1
  12. I think those are the three longest posts on this board.
  13. Take 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon, take out the Kevin Bacon and 6 parts, And go from one jazz musician (leader & sideman, live or studio) and find a way to get back to the very same musician in how ever many steps it takes. More challenging to impose an amount, but it doesn't matter.
  14. What kind of teenager was I? Withdrawn, now get the fuck out of my room!!!
  15. I'm totally serious about the drums. I was in a punk (alternative, whatever) band for over 7 years and our drummer was ADHD. It did cause problems with timing, but damn we were quite fast for a while. We threatened to kick him out and he responded great after that. He was predictable in that he'd speed up or even slow down in the same spots during any song, he just didn't realize it. He doesn't like our older stuff as much now because of that. On our last album (our 4th), he felt that it was his best work ever & I agree. He works in computers, got promoted and had to go back on ritalin to focus in meetings he always had to attend. He did very well. The funniest thing though is he is the human equivilent of a dog who loves your attention. He's a cartoon in 3-D really. I think if he believes in reincarnation, he wants to come back as Daffy Duck. I love the guy. Still friends.
  16. Thank you brownie. The track listing is different from the most recent cd release. I retorically wonder why?
  17. Why n...yes, yes I am. Me & my wife, ehhhh, Morgan Fairchild, yeah. That's the ticket. It's called, ehhhhh, Morgan Fairchild's guide to Rahsaan Roland Kirk, yeah, that's it. Actually no, I'm not (nor is my wife...Morgan Fairchild). I've been putting the albums on cassette (yes, cassette) like they were originally released, and I noticed this one the track listing has two songs in different spots compared to another discography I've seen. So I wanted to just check as...I have nothing better to do.
  18. Anyone have this? Just wanted to check something. Thank you.
  19. The way I feel about longboxes can be summed up with a few lines from a Bugs Bunny cartoon with the word longboxes in place of the word rabbit: Cowboy: "Longboxes. I hate longboxes. If there's one thing I can't stand more than one longbox...is TWO longboxes." All my cds are in a big open "box" where I can keep things in chronological order or as much as possible with box sets. But I put mine two rows high & two rows deep so long boxes just fuck it up. Although if I want to get to the bottom first row in back, I have to take a bunch of cds out, but I've gotten used to it. I've got two of them & haven't filled them as I get rid of some cds after a while, but those days might be over with trimming the wheat from the chaff (spelling?).
  20. I thought OnoffOn was songs they had from when they were together originally rather than new written ones. I think a song called Dirt is on there & it's also on Horrible Truth & the radio sessions on Taang.
  21. Here in Connecticut it just went to over $2. I said to myself, "I'm not gonna pay $2 a gallon for as long as I can. Ahh, here's a place where it's $1.97. That's not $2, ha, ha! Time to pretend to be sticking it to the man!" It's wasn't until I started filling that I noticed I grabbed the premium pump by accident @ $2.13 a gallon.
  22. Bright Moments, where were you????
  23. Yeah, it counts down minus 2 seconds between each track. Side 4 of Audio Dream is still there. it's 12:41 long. As I made sure to be doing something else while waiting for it, it scared the shit out of me when it came on. I figured that was the desired respone.
  24. Here's an email I just got from Hyena Records after I passed along my feelings about the Collectables label: Dave, Thanks for writing. First off, you learned the hard way to never buy anything from Collectables. They have no intention of serving the music. It's like a chop shop. Secondly, I'll pass your email along to Joel Dorn, but there is nothing whatsoever he can do about it. He hasn't worked for Atlantic records since the mid-70s. As I'm sure you know, Atlantic is owned by Warner Music Group, which up until a few months ago was part of AOL, and still remains a mega corporation. Joel Dorn is so far off their radar to not even be existant when it comes to the masters they issue to licensing labels for reissue. Even if he were to complain about them mis-representing his original productions, it would mean exactly nothing to them. It's a drag, but unfortunately it's the reality of the situation. If it were Rhino reissuing those records, he could have more say, but the licensing to other labels is a lost cause. If you're a Rahsaan fan, you should check out Compliments of The Mysterious Phantom on HYENA. It's a live recording from '74 in San Diego. It's must have Rahsaan! Stay tuned and keep in touch. Kevin HYENA www.hyenarecords.com Upcoming on HYENA Skip Heller (Fakebook) & Mocean Worker (Enter The MoWo!) just released The Frank & Joe Show (33 1/3) / May 11th Stan Getz (My Foolish Heart: Live At The Left Bank) *Reissue* / May 25th Lafayette Gilchrist (The Music According To Lafayette Gilchrist) / June 29th Thelonious Monk (Monk 'Round The World) / *Thelonious Records* / June 29th
