  1. ! I love that CD. It was one of the very first Gerry Mulligan CDs i ever bought.
  2. Just placed a pre-order for this set: The Girl From Chickasaw County - The Complete Capitol Masters -- Bobbie Gentry I eagerly await its Oct. 12th release!!!
  3. Discs 2 & 3 of 4. (First listen to these discs and I guarantee I am not going to try to force them back into the stiff, unyielding, top-loading hardboard pages that were designed to imprison/deface them. I hate product design which looks nice on paper but actually makes the product more frustrating to use by the consumer.) A lot of great music which I have not heard before.
  4. Speaking of taking "a great original in a different and equally satisfying direction", here's Aretha at Monteux, 1971
  5. Disc 1 of 4. Lots of great competition on this particular disc, but the winner for favorite song today is "Mr. Big Stuff" by Jean Knight.
  6. :Gaston" by the Bad Plus is a hoot!
  7. A touching song by, and in memory of, Dave Catney, who passed away 24 years ago this month.
  8. Earlier: Currently: Eddie Chamblee and Billy Mackel were there in 1956 and 1977!!!
  9. Granted, I only paid 95 cents for this disc, but this 2001 release is actually a pretty good album with some strong songs on it.
  10. My guess is that the label is showing that this record could be sold by the record store clerk under three different categories: Instrumental, Sweet or Be Bop. Nowadays, the label might be printed in such a way as this: "Instrumental / Sweet / Be Bop".
  11. Dick Hyman was just 23 when this concert was recorded 68 years ago and he's still going today!
  12. I've never been a big Popeye fan, but I caught this cartoon, in its original black & white, on TV and found the gags to be kind of funny and the (uncredited) swing music a pleasant surprise.
  13. Part of this 2 LP set was reissued on this CD:
  14. Some other stray entries in the Woody Herman discography: All apparently from 1978 on Century Records. (Flip being Flip Phillips) Released in 1998 on Chiaroscuro Records.
  15. No personnel listing is provided, but the leader did give shout outs to Sal Nistico, Carl Fontana and Kenny Asher on piano. Mel Torme completely ruins "Fly Me To The Moon" in an attempt to make sure his version would not be confused with that other singer's.
  16. From 2015. I wish the band had stayed out of her way. I also wish she had made an entire album of just her singing & accompanying herself on piano.
