  3. Thanks, Brownie. Do you mean that those Fresh Sound CDs are drawn from real masters, and not from LPs? That would be great, as there are a couple of other Dauntless recordings that I would like to get.
  4. Is anyone familiar with this? Is it a hokey novelty item, or is it interesting music? I think there is a Spanish CD of it, and am interested. But I could not find any sound clips.
  5. I've just read about Whitney Balliett, and am thinking about getting a book of some of his reviews. Am wondering which one to get. Is his "Collected Works" the one to get? Or is there some other book that is a better collection/introduction? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.
  6. I've been listening to a couple of Ruby Braff recordings with Sam Margolis on tenor. These are "Ruby Braff Special" (Vanguard) and "Swinging with Ruby Braff" (Jazztone). Margolis seems to have been a player much influenced by Lester Young, but much more upbeat -- without the eerie neuroses of Young. Does anyone know anything about Margolis and about what other recordings he played on?
  7. I think at least 2 of the 3 we are talking about have been remastered & re-issued in Japan before -- that is, at a date later than when those awful domestic releases with purple borders were out. Couldn't Sony USA have borrowed/leased the remasterings from Sony Japan? In any case, I hope these are remasters w/ original covers.
  8. I'm rather new to LP buying, and noticed that some classical LPs are marked "Quadraphonic". Do these sound like other, regular LPs on regular stereo? Thanks in advance.
  9. As for non-jazz acts, the Police! I wish we had 3 more albums from the bums! Interesting. They would be a candidate for a "3 less" thread for me; after the first two, I lost interest. I think the last 3 are more uneven than the first 2; but each of the last 3 have some songs that are some of their best, in my opinion. "Synchronicity 2" is their absolute best. Of course, I may be biased because I started to listen to them (and pop music in general) in about 1983.
  10. Great. I usually go with Newbury & ImportCD, but they happen to not have a set I want. Will try blowit.
  11. As for non-jazz acts, the Police! I wish we had 3 more albums from the bums!
  12. I've had good experience with buying from Newbury Comics on Amazon. Am wondering whether people have had good experience with the Amazon seller called blowitoutahere. For instance, can one assume that they won't send a promo or cutout? Thanks in advance.
  13. Ah, I should have thought of Brownie. But I will stick with Booker Little. I think he was onto more unusual & singular things. My runner-ups to (2): Tina Brooks, Thad Jones, Louis Smith, and Cecil Taylor of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
  14. Here are a couple of frivolous questions. (1) Lots of great jazz musicians died quite young. Who, aside from Charlie Parker, do you most wish had lived a little longer to record 3 more albums? (2) Who do you most wish had recorded 3 (additional) albums with Alfred Lion? I expect many will name John Coltrane. My own answer to both questions: Booker Little. His 4 albums are all astounding; and he seems to have been on a very steep upward trajectory. Too bad he died so early.

  17. Unfortunately, there was no time to visit record stores. But thanks for the tip.
  18. I will be visiting Chamaign, Illinois this Monday and Tuesday, and wanted to visit a record store if I have the time. Judging from their websites, it seems to me that Exile on Main Street and Record Swap are the ones to visit. Does anyone know whether either or both are worth visiting for jazz vinyl? Thanks in advance.
  19. Hi folks. I would like to acquire over time LPs of some of my favorite Miles Davis, Blue Note, and Fantasy titles. The problem is that there are so many different versions of the more popular titles out there that I don't know where to start. There are the BN titles for around $10, some put out by Classic Records at $35-50, some put out by a couple of companies in 45 RPM's at $50. And those are just new versions out there. As for Miles Davis, there are the cheap $10 versions, Legacy 180 gm versions at $18, and then some other more expensive versions. Any advice or preferences out there? I am tempted to get the cheaper $10 versions, but then I don't want to get anything that would not be significant sonic upgrades from my CDs. Any advice or even just expression of preferences would be much appreciated.
  20. I just got a turntable, and also found a very clean copy of Steve Lacy and Roswell Rudd's "Trickles" (Black Saint) at a local vinyl store. I was looking forward to getting some vinyl versions of the Black Saint titles I have in CDs, as the CDs all sound pretty cloudy/opaque -- as if the recordings all have a cold. I'm disappointed to find that this LP, though a bit more transparent, is not that much better. Is this other people's impression of Black Saint LPs too?
  21. Last week, at a local record store: $50 for Mosaic George Shearing 5-CD set (no box or booklet, but everything else in tip top condition). Plus $5 for Disc 2 of the Nat King Cole set. Now, I wish I had the other 17!!
  22. I will be receiving my first turntable (Rega P1) in about 2 days. A person who seems to be quite knowledgeable about audio matters has told me that one needs to break in a new cartridge by playing on it for 20-30 hours. He has also told me that I should use clean LP's when I do this, and also that the LP's I use may get damaged in the process. I asked Vladimir, the audio guy at Cadence, about this, and he says that the last part of the advice I got -- about the LP's getting damaged -- is complete hogwash. Could people give me their opinion as to who is right? Obviously, if LPs will get damaged in the breaking in process, I'd hate to play my Commodore LPs in the first few days, and would want to go out and buy a cheap and clean LP for the purpose. Thanks in advance.
  23. Wonderful photo! I will probably get a turntable for my upcoming birthday. I am tempted to try a couple of these Blue Note 45 RPM's. But the fear is that once I listen to these, I won't be able to listen to the CDs I've amassed over the years. Has something like that happened to anyone here?
