  1. OK, folks. I already have more recommendations than I can handle. Thanks though. I've just gotten copies of a Shins CD and a Spoon CD. Spoon seems like I may like it. I'm a bit down on the Shins -- a bit too tepid on the vocals. There is a distinct possibility that one necessary criterion for me is nostalgia! I may be unable to really get into pop music that I didn't go to high school with. (By the way, it is Sting's first solo album that initially got me into jazz. But then I didn't listen to jazz again until grad school.) I like the drummer for Rush, but I find the songs a bit dated -- too seventies. And the singer is a bit too shrill for me. And I find Cold Play really annoying. I think the Guardian calls them the "Mope Squad", and that seems apt. My animosity may be partly based on jealousy though -- I've always had a thing for Gwyneth Paltrow. The popular music singers I like best are Willie Nelson and Debbie Harry. Too bad they don't play with bands that have moving parts. The backing music sounds all so static. I'd love to hear Willie Nelson with . . . say, the BassDrumBone! Wouldn't that be exciting? How about Paul Motian or Han Bennink with Bill McHenry and Nate Wooley behind Debbie Harry? And one mystery for me is why there is no jazz that really takes advantage of the country and western idiom. Bill Frisell should be interesting but he is not. All his CDs are so damn boring. I once suggested to Ab Baars that he should record a CD of Willie Nelson songs. As you may know, he recorded a really great CD of old Native American songs. Ab said he'd think about it.
  2. Thanks, everyone. And thanks to Lon for the welcome. I've just listened to some sound clips. And the Shins and Spoon sound really good. I will try them next time I'm at Waterloo. One thing I've noticed about the recent pop music. It seems that the squeaky, girlish singing among female vocalists is really quite popular. I thought we had left that behind some time in the 1930s. Even Shelby Lynn, who has this throaty, earthy, wonderful voice when she performs live sounds girlish on studio tracks. What gives?
  3. So here I am a new resident of Austin, TX. Indie rock is all the rage here, and the local record store (Waterloo) seems to stock only about a dozen jazz titles. So, I am thinking that I should go the Roman route and get into a little bit of rock. Any recommendations? I haven't listened to rock music since the 1980s. I still like a bit of U2 and a bit of REM. My favorite I guess is the Police -- I went to 3 concerts during their recent reunion tour! I like Stewart Copeland's drumming especially, and Andy Summers's transparent guitar-playing, and Sting is not bad as a singer. Here are some of my criteria for what I think I would like. If you think that there is something out there that fits or approximates, please let me know. (1) Quartet or smaller. Don't want a lot of instruments or a lot of processing (i.e. heavy production). Would like a basic rock outfit. (2) Good instrumentals, esp. good drumming. Preferably no cheesy guitar solos. (3) Preferably no embarrassing or cringe-inducing lyrics (like Sting!). (4) Preferably something recent. Don't care for psychedelic stuff. (5) Preferably not a group heavily into pastiche or postmodern approach of combining different styles to show that they have done homework and are clever. (6) I like clarity of sound. I find some of REM and most of Sonic Youth frustrating to listen to because of the murky sound. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.
  4. I've picked up, and am now enjoying a lot, a couple of sax-bass.drums trio abums: Stephen Riley's "Inside Out" and J.D. Allen's "Shine". I am a little perplexed. Why do I find these players more listenable than countless other tenor players out there? I can tell that people like Joshua Redman, Mark Turner, and many others are just as accomplished and technically proficient as these two, but the former don't do anything for me. Whereas Riley and Allen are really enjoyable to listen to. I wonder why.
  5. Up for air.
  6. Does this have all of Twardzik's Paris recordings with Baker? Thanks. I don't think so. This CD has just some selections from the Barclay dates. It's a very nice selection with a very nice cover. But if you are looking for a complete set, you need to get the Barclay box issued by Universal a couple of years ago.
  7. I'm very happy for those who like Threadgill. But where is the Ahmad Jamal set???
  8. I've just picked up the following 2 titles from a used record store, and came to realize that they are not my cup of tea. Would anyone be willing to trade? I would be particularly interested in acquiring some other OOP Verve Elite titles -- esp. George Russell, Jimmy Cleveland, Lawrence Brown, Herb Ellis w/ Jimmy Giuffre. Stan Getz with The Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band, "Change of Scenes" (Verve) [both CD & digipack in excellent condition] XXXAlan Shorter, "Orgasm" (Verve) [CD has small scratches that do not affect sound; digipack shows some age] If no one is interested, I am planning to return these to the record store in a few days. Thanks. XXX: gone.

  11. That is very good to know. So, do LPs that have been newly remastered for the LP release say so obviously on the packaging? Or do you need to do more investigation to know? There are a bunch of LPs released by a company called Classic Records. These are marked as "Audiophile" LPs on Mosaic/True Blue website. Are these the kind of records that you are talking about? Thanks a lot.
  12. So, I am thinking of buying a turntable. I have sort of inherited the Mosaic Commodore sets, and would like to buy a turntable to play the LPs. I have a couple of naive questions that I hope someone could answer. (1) Where does one buy LPs? I see that Mosaic/True Blue sells LPs. But are there internet sellers who offer better prices? I am of course talking about new LPs. There is a local record store that sells new LPs, but their selection is very limited. (2) I see that there are multiple versions of many recordings -- with different weights of vinyl designated. Which version is worth getting and what exactly are the advantages of heavier vinyl versions? I am expecting (or at least hoping) that I won't get into LPs very much. I am thinking that over time I will get 20-40 of my favorite jazz recordings in LPs. So I won't mind spending a little extra on each LP if the improvements in sounds or in longevity of LPs is marked. Thanks in advance for your answers!!
  13. Shouldn't that be "MD4" for Shorty Rogers? Boy! I'd love to jump, but that's too big a jump for me!
  14. I am wondering whether people ever have such an experience. I used to love Anthony Braxton's early 1970s quartet recordings with Holland, Altschul, and G. Lewis or Wheeler -- especially the rhythm section of Holland & Altschul. For the last few weeks, I'm finding this music just not very exciting -- almost (not quite, but almost) as uninteresting as Dave Holland's recent recordings. Whenever I listen to their recordings now, I find them a tad forced, a tad uninteresting. This quartet used to be one of my favorite jazz groups -- along with Miles Davis's second quintet and Ornette Coleman's 1959 quartet. Do you ever have such experiences -- a sudden drop in your interest in what used to be a favorite group? Does the interest and excitement return eventually after a while? I feel like I've lost something special in losing my interest in this group -- sort of like becoming blind to certain colors.
  15. Mine is 1997 too. Are you sure your copy does not say 24-bit on the lower left side of the back tray insert? Mine does.
  16. Up with many additions.
  17. I would like to find a good home for my set of Fremeaux’s definitive Complete Django Reinhardt. Mastered by Daniel Nevers, there are 20 volumes of these, and each volume has 2 CDs -- 40 CDs total. Each volume also comes with a fairly thick booklet with discography and notes (in French & English). Here is the link to the Django page at Fremeaux’s site: http://www.fremeaux.com/index.php?option=c...mp;limitstart=0 And here is the link to Amazon’s listing of these volumes: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw_0_10?...efix=integrale+ All of the volumes I have are in like-new condition, and I have retained even the little Fremeaux advertisements that come with each of the volumes. I believe that some of the volumes are out-of-print now. I am asking $415 plus insured shipping for all 20 volumes. If you for some reason cannot send a paypal payment (from a bank account), I’d be happy to receive an electronic or actual gift certificate from Amazon, Mosaic, and/or some other internet merchant for the same amount. This is probably the last time I will post a sale notice for this set here. If there is no taker, then I will post individual volumes on Amazon. Thanks for looking.
  18. Up with many additions.
  19. Obviously, Lon, you have a much more nuanced understanding of these matters than I do. I've just noticed that the K2 remasters sound very full and natural-sounding to my ears, whereas many of the RVGs and other remasters strike me as quite artificial and super aggressive so that I feel a bit worn out by the end of an album. In any case, I have a pretty modest stereo system, so perhaps I am not the best judge of these matters.
  20. Up with some additions.
  21. I wish that Fantasy/Concord had kept their 20-bit K2 line. Those were the best remasters to my ears. I have many of the Japanese K2's, but not this one. Concord's decision to scratch the K2's and to opt for RVG and Keepnews remasters always seemed to me a cynical marketing move.

Thanks to Ghost and others for the recommendation of Josh Berman's "Old Idea". A fantastic recording!! Has anyone tried other recordings with Berman?
  23. I just bought this remaster, and found the remaster so shrill and artificial that I decided to go back to the OJC remaster. Did anyone else have this experience? I don't think I've had such a visceral dislike of a remaster since the RVG remaster of Jackie McLean's "Fickle Sonance".

But so far we have the following CDs for sale or trade. (Straight ahead CDs to follow; and both lists to be supplemented subsequently.) Shipping within the US is included.
