Hello. I will be traveling to Chicago this weekend. Any record store recommendations aside from Jazz Record Mart, Dusty Groove, and the two Towers?

Given that Bechet spent so much time in France, such a set would be really nice to have. Too bad it is oop. Perhaps we should start lobbying Mosaic for a set -- something like their Django set.

Well, thanks all for your very helpful suggestions. It seems that the Storyville CDs and most of the Masters of Jazz CDs are out of print. Given those facts, it seems that Classics may be the way to go to get the recordings many of you are talking about. If I am not mistaken, Classics has been releasing chronological and complete Bechet recordings, and will eventually release all the recordings up to 1958 or '59. It seems that they are now at 1952. (Mezz Mezzrow recordings are also available from Classics.) I've been sort of reluctant to dip into Classics CDs. But perhaps I should do so now. And it seems that Classics is the only way to get much of Louis Armstrong's Decca sessions. For those of you familiar with these, how are the sounds on these Classic CDs? I do not have many European manufactured CDs. I have some Django Fremeauxs, and I've found that they are not the most expertly remastered CDs. Are the Classics OK? Thanks again. P.S. By the way, the RCA set is truly wonderful. I agree with one of you that the sound is not the best. It sounds awfully dry and a bit shrill. But given the wonderful music, I do not really mind. Of course, I would have preferred better sound. Perhaps someday, RCA will release a better and fuller version of this set, along with better versions of the Fats Waller and Ellington sets! One can only hope.

I've been relishing listening to Bechet in the last few weeks. It started with some Blue Notes and the sessions on the Mosaic HRS box. I just managed to find a 3-CD RCA set in a used CD store in NYC. Aside from these Blue Note, RCA, and HRS sessions, could anyone give me some recommendations? I can only listen to CDs (I don't have a turntable), and I do not like buying boxes with questionable copyright credentials. Thanks in advance.

I've recently purchased used copies of some of Fats Waller & Rhythm series put out by RCA/Bluebird in the 90s. I have a question. One of them -- "Breaking the Ice -- Early Years Part I" came in a thin space-saving jewel case. Now, because other ones came in larger jewel cases that can house up to 4 CDs (I think you know what I am talking about), I am suspicious that a previous owner of my copy of "Breaking the Ice" changed jewel cases and got rid of the front insert. If you have this set, could you tell me whether your copy came in a thin case or a larger case? Sorry to list this question here, but I did not know where else to put it.

John, I think the POCJ actually sounds more "stable" if you know what I mean. If both the Mosaic and the POCJ were from LPs, then it seems like the POCJ was from an LP that was flatter. (Sorry to be such an ignoramus about this.) I had actually put my POCJ for sale a couple of times on this board, and I am thinking now of keeping it for its better sound. I haven't had a chance to really sit down and listen to the whole Mosaic Wilson set yet. But I really like it so far. I do wish though that there was more than 1 track in which Gerry Mulligan appears, as I am a huge Mulligan fan, and I do think that the Mulligan-Wilson combination is very intriguing.

I actually have this POCJ CD. But being an amateur about these things, I don't know what wows and flutters are. Based on my comparison, the POCJ sounds better. But my guess is that it too is from an LP, as it does not sound as crisp as some other 24-bit CDs issued by POCJ. Sorry to be less than helpful.

Up for the last time with price reductions. It amazes me how much more eager people are to acquire 1950s and 1960s hardbop than to acquire anything before or after. I guess the jazz of those times are the most listener-friendly.

I've noticed that Warner has recently released remasters of some Atlantic recordings (an Evans, a Coleman, etc.). I hope this is an indication that they will be releasing more remasters of old Atlantics. I'm especially eager to get some remastered versions of some early MJQ recordings.

I completely agree. This is one of the best Konitz dates in my opinion. And Solal is just about the most interesting jazz pianist out there. I think all the hype surrounding Jason Moran's recent releases should be applied to Solal's recent Blue Note release. I think Blue Note is releasing another Solal recording this fall.

Yes, I got the HRS Mosaic about 3 weeks ago. So far, I really like the first two discs. Not sure about some of the Billy Taylor trio sessions and the big band sessions. Boy, how I wish the Commodore sets were available, and in CDs. Maybe I should start a petition to lobby Michael Cuscuna to make these available again.
