I have the following recent Palmetto titles for sale, in case anyone is interested. $10 each including shipping within the US. All of my CDs (including inserts) are in excellent condition unless otherwise noted. Please e-mail me at ktoh@indiana.edu. I prefer to receive payments in PayPal -- from bank accounts only; no credit cards. Joel Frahm & Brad Mehldau, “Don’t Explain” (Palmetto) Frank Kimbrough, “Lullabluebye” (Palmetto) [w/ Ben Allison, Matt Wilson] Ted Nash, “Still Evolved” (Palmetto) [w/ W. Marsalis, Kimbrough, Allison, Wilson] For those of you who do not know Kimbrough, there is a very nice profile of him in the current issue of Jazz Times. Andrew Hill dubbed him “one of the few meaningful artists of the future.” And Gary Giddins who usually does not like Mehldau raved about his performance in “Don’t Explain”.

Artists Who Should Have Had a Mosaic...
Bol replied to Leeway's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well, I think BN people are pretty well-covered, although I would love a set covering the 5000 series. Here is my list, divided into 3 parts, in terms of importance: Earl Hines Artie Shaw Benny Carter Ben Webster Hank Jones Ahmad Jamal Al Cohn (esp. RCA) Zoot Sims Martial Solal John Lewis Wardell Gray Bill Perkins Charlie Mariano Jack Montrose & Bob Gordon Barney Wilen And I would love the following label sets: Dawn (Sims, Cohn, etc.) Storyville (Konitz, Bechet, etc.) Vogue (Monk, Roach, Bechet, Byas, Reinhardt, Renaud, Wilen, Solal, Jaspar, Brookmeyer, etc.) Come to think of it, I'd just love a Vogue set of some expatriate and visiting Americans and French musicians influenced by them. Am I the only one who partly regrets the introduction of the Selects? It seems that the real Mosaic sets have slowed down considerably. It's June, and no new complete set yet this year!! -
How hard will I have to look for these titles?

Just sent you an e-mail regarding a way to get the Morton/Webster CD issued by Toshiba in 1999. -
Quincy, Thanks so much. I hope these will be issued indvidually in the near future. I have the first 2, and wouldn't want to pay for extra copies.
-
Are the original covers on the individual CDs? And is the sound quality of previously available ones like "Time Out" really better on this set?
-
I have a Japanese POCJ CD called "Now's the Time" that has all of those songs, and has Hank Jones on it. I like it very much.
-
So "Swedish Schnapps" does not have strings? AMG says it does while some other internet discography sites say it does not.
-
Could anyone tell me whether the following Charlie Parker Verve albums are worth seeking out: Jazz Perennial Swedish Schnapps Fiesta I think they are all from a series called "The Genius of Charlie Parker". Please also let me know whether any of them have strings in them. I got conflicting information from internet sources. Thanks in advance.

Just sent you an e-mail re: "Intermodulation".

Completely agree. Both Farlow and Hank Jones are just so elegant and tasteful. They swing too. I once e-mailed Mosaic about doing a set of complete Grammercy 5 recordings. MC wrote back saying that he has been wanting to, but that Shaw wants too much money for the rights. Too bad. Another thing that I hope happens is Richard Sudhalter doing a biography of Shaw. (Ghost of Miles's idea; and a great one.) If you haven't already, check out the following feature on NPR: http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/features/2002/mar/shaw/ Check out the extended interview. Shaw is a talker!! Never boring, and never ridiculous.

For those of you who have this, what do you think? Is it worth seeking out? How does it compare to the first volume -- "Last Recordings"? Thanks in advance.

Just placed my order. I really hope that nothing else gets on the short-list any time soon. Very hard on one's wallet, and I don't even have time to really listen to all this music any time soon. -

LF: Some Sidney Bechet Masters of Jazz CDs
Bol replied to Bol's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Lon, Thanks. I just checked the Amazon.fr site. A couple of the ones I want are available. But the prices are rather high (almost 20 euros per disc), and with the unfavorable exchange rate and shipping, I think I will try to get these through other means. Thanks again. -
I was disappointed to find that all of the Masters of Jazz CDs are oop just as I was becoming interested in Bechet. I think the French company that released them went out of business. (Perhaps they could not compete with the company that releases the Chronological Classics.) In any case, can anyone offer me leads on obtaining vols. 1, 2, 4, 6-8 of the Sidney Bechet Masters of Jazz CDs? I am looking for these volumes with both the CDs and inserts in excellent condition. Thanks in advance for any help. Please e-mail me at: ktoh@indiana.edu

A couple of months ago, I asked Mosaic about the possibility of these becoming available on CDs. I got a response back saying that there is no plan to lease these recordings from Universal again. So, my guess is that these will not be available again in any near future. I recently saw the 3 LP sets at Jazz Record Center in NYC (with some defect to one of the LPs). They were together priced at $1800!! The owner told me that he rarely has these in stock. If I had just won a lottery, I would have bought them and a turntable. Sigh...

Hello. I will be traveling to Chicago this weekend. Any record store recommendations aside from Jazz Record Mart, Dusty Groove, and the two Towers?
-
Given that Bechet spent so much time in France, such a set would be really nice to have. Too bad it is oop. Perhaps we should start lobbying Mosaic for a set -- something like their Django set.
-
Well, thanks all for your very helpful suggestions. It seems that the Storyville CDs and most of the Masters of Jazz CDs are out of print. Given those facts, it seems that Classics may be the way to go to get the recordings many of you are talking about. If I am not mistaken, Classics has been releasing chronological and complete Bechet recordings, and will eventually release all the recordings up to 1958 or '59. It seems that they are now at 1952. (Mezz Mezzrow recordings are also available from Classics.) I've been sort of reluctant to dip into Classics CDs. But perhaps I should do so now. And it seems that Classics is the only way to get much of Louis Armstrong's Decca sessions. For those of you familiar with these, how are the sounds on these Classic CDs? I do not have many European manufactured CDs. I have some Django Fremeauxs, and I've found that they are not the most expertly remastered CDs. Are the Classics OK? Thanks again. P.S. By the way, the RCA set is truly wonderful. I agree with one of you that the sound is not the best. It sounds awfully dry and a bit shrill. But given the wonderful music, I do not really mind. Of course, I would have preferred better sound. Perhaps someday, RCA will release a better and fuller version of this set, along with better versions of the Fats Waller and Ellington sets! One can only hope.

I've been relishing listening to Bechet in the last few weeks. It started with some Blue Notes and the sessions on the Mosaic HRS box. I just managed to find a 3-CD RCA set in a used CD store in NYC. Aside from these Blue Note, RCA, and HRS sessions, could anyone give me some recommendations? I can only listen to CDs (I don't have a turntable), and I do not like buying boxes with questionable copyright credentials. Thanks in advance.
