  1. Does anyone know where I can obtain a copy of Barney Wilen's "More from Barney at the Club St. Germain" released by BMG France in the late 1990s? Thanks for any tips.
  2. This may be a tribute also to the Benny Goodman trios of the 1940s and 1950s on Caitol with Teddy Wilson, Mel Powell, or Jimmy Rowles, and a number of different drummers whose names I cannot recall. The single CD of these trio dates put out by Blue Note is a very very nice one. I too am intrigued by this upcoming CD.
  3. Just got my Kent Presents and J.J. sets. (Thought the J.J. set might soon go on the running low list as well). The Rosolino vocals are oddly affecting. They don't sound like things you should play in polite company though.
  4. Up with price reductions!!
  5. That's a shame that this was released only on LPs. I wonder why.
  6. Is this a CD or LP set? (Did it ever come out on CDs? The Mosaic website just lists 6-LP set). And is it small combo or big band jazz? Thanks.

  8. I think this one is oop. But I've just spotted a copy at a used store here. Does anyone have an opinion on it? I've never heard Byron. But I've been wondering why more contemporary musicians do not play clarinet. The quartet lineup with Frisell looks interesting. And I think Byron is supposed to release a new CD with Jason Moran soon. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
  9. Neither can I. It makes my skin crawl.
  10. I usually do not go for current releases. But I've been really enjoying Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" and Roy Haynes's "Trio with Perez & Patitucci" and "Love Letters", so that I'm beginning to look around for CDs with some of the same personnel. I'm considering the following two: Herbie Hancock, "Directions in Music" (Verve) Roy Haynes, "Brids of a Feather" (Dreyfus) Could you let me know if you have opinions about these, and esp. as to whether these are similar to the 3 above-named CDs that I have and like? Thanks in advance.

  12. I hope they add Jim Hall's 2 trio albums for Pacific Jazz: "Jazz Guitar" and "Good Friday Blues".
  13. Well, I'm sorry that I missed that. But am glad that it exists. I hope it turns up again one of these days.
  14. I did a search. No luck.
  15. I've been looking for this one ever since I began to listen to McLean -- about 4 years ago. Unlike other TOCJs, I've never seen it anywhere -- not even on eBay. Does it exist? I was hoping that the recent RVG release would have made this one more common. But no such luck. Would appreciate any leads.
  16. Just took advantage of the Borders 20% off coupon to purchase "In the Sky", "Kilimanjaro", and "Silent Way". Just listened to the first 2 tracks of "Kilimanjaro" and the whole of "Silent Way". So far, pretty good. "Silent Way" became a bit monotonous after a while. And for both, I cannot help thinking that a piano would have been nicer. And if he wanted thick chordal textures, why not a real church organ? Call me a philistine! Hopefully, these will grow on me in the future. I don't regret getting them. Not yet, anyway. I really like Holland and Williams's playing so far.

  18. Thanks for all the replies. The consensus seems to be that this group does not live up to its potential in studio recordings. But "Extended Play" is a live album, and I have to say, I'm not excited about that either. Oh well. I guess I will try to catch them live if an opportunity presents itself. Thanks again.
  19. For the second time in recent months, I've bought a very well-reviewed Dave Holland Quintet CD only to find it very, very boring. Am I the only one who feels this way about this group? The first time, I tried "Extended Play". This time it was "Points of View". I have to admit that my preference is for the fuddy duddy stuff of the 1930s-early 1960s. But some fantastic experience with recent releases by Roy Haynes and Wayne Shorter motivated me to try some new stuff. Holland's group got such good reviews that I thought I should try his recordings. I find his sax players and drummer uninspiring, and the marimba/vibes player a bit annoying. (I do like Holland, and really like Robin Eubanks on trombone.) And the ECM sound I've never really liked; it seems to make jazz verge on the new age music. (I think the following group would be ideal: Eubanks tb, Mark Turner ts, Danilo Perez p, Holland b, Roy Haynes ds; and recorded by Y. Itoh for "88".) I must be really missing something. The reviews are so positive. But let me know if you agree with me, even partially. I'd hate to think that I'm the only one who feels this way about this music.
  20. Thanks for all the recommendations. I will try these. I've always resisted any electric piano or bass because a few times I've listened to albums with them, I really did not like the sounds. But perhaps I should make an exception for Miles Davis. Thanks again.
  21. I've been wondering whether I should get these. I am a big fan of the all-acoustic '60s Miles Davis quintet, but did not like Miles's fusion albums like "Bitches Brew" when I checked the latter out. Could anyone tell me what these 2 albums are like? Are they more like the acoustic quintet of the mid-60s? What portions of these are all acoustic? Thanks in advance.
  22. Wow! Thanks. How is the sound quality on the "Hundred Years" CD?
  23. I've just read in Gary Giddins's "Visions of Jazz" that Gerry Mulligan once recorded with Jack Teagarden. Is this really true? What recording? Does anyone know? I've always thought of these two as part of a dream line-up.
  24. Anyone interested in this? Please e-mail me at: ktoh@indiana.edu I prefer PayPal payment from a bank account. Sidemen on this include: Kenny Dorham, Hank Jones, Ray Brown, Max Roach, Buddy Rich.
