TREASURE TROVE OF MOSAIC LP SETS ON E-BAY
Bol replied to jazzkrow's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I wonder why Mosaic did not release these on CDs. And I hope Mosaic or someone else releases this material soon. I have some individual CDs released by Universal, and they just whet your appetite. -
Damn, Bol, did you buy that at TD's? I saw that last week and nearly picked it up... I gotta be more quick on the draw, now that I know another gent of similar fine taste is stalking B-town's jazz CD haunts! B) Yes, that's the place. Phew... I guess I almost missed it. Thanks for telling me about that shop. I feel a bit guilty. I hope you did not want it very much.

Well, I have a very simple system. A mini-system from Denon. But I still prefer the TOCJs. On the VICJ front, I agree totally. The 20-bit K2 remastering seems to beat all other standard CD remastering. Too bad Blue Note has not used this system.
-
I wanted to get some of these CD sets, but find that they are all out of print. Too bad. Here is my question: How commonly or uncommonly available are these in used record stores and on ebay? Are they really rare so that if I really want them I should grab them whenever they are available with little concern for their condition? Or are they often available so that I can be discerning about conditions of copies?

I really prefer the TOCJs -- both in terms of sound and in terms of packaging. I find the TOCJ sound to be the best of the Blue Notes available. With RVGs, I get the sense that I am being assaulted. And for some reason, and I'm not sure I can articulate this properly, but with TOCJs I get the sense that all of the Blue Notes have some sort of continuity. Whether the recording I'm listening to is some early hard bop in the 1500 series or some avant garde in the 4100 series, I get the sense that there is a continuity and sort of logical progression among the albums. When I listen to RVGs on the other hand, I feel like the recordings from different time periods are totally different animals altogether. I don't think I articulated that well. But so it goes. In terms of packaging, I'd rather get the domestic RVGs than the JRVGs. Hate those mini-LPs. They look great the first couple of weeks, and then they show wear. And it's such a hastle getting the CDs out. After acquiring some mini-LPs (BN and others) when I first started to listen to jazz, I've slowly replaced all of them. I only have two now -- Curtis Fuller's "Blues-ette" and Zoot Sims's "If I am Lucky". And I am hoping that remastered versions of these would be released domestically soon so that I can replace my copies with jewel case versions.

Welcome, bol. I found the Lewis (which is the one that has gone OOP first) recently in a sales bin. Should not be too difficult, I think. The Hall is very much recommended! ubu A Toshiba CD I have seems to be identical in content to the Hall CD in this series. Plus it has an original cover. Thanks again.
-
Thank you, ubu. That's very helpful. Another batch of oop CDs to look for.... It never stops.
-
Does anyone have a list of the whole series? I think I've seen the Bechet around. Did not realize that this was a series.

I just came across a sealed copy of this amazing Blue Note set at a used record store. It contains 29 selections by these musicians recorded in 1943 and 1944, all remastered using SBM in 1998. I also have 2 CDs from Toshiba's Blue Note Classics series that overlap with this set a bit. Together, these 4 CDs give me most of Mosaic's Hall-De Paris-Johnson-Dickenson set, and probably in much better sound quality. (I think I am missing only a couple of sessions led by Vic Dickenson.) I've come to really like these hot jazz Blue Note sessions, and I never knew that a set like this was put out by Blue Note in recent years. If you can find this set, I really recommend it. You will hear some of the best small group jazz out there. And nice notes by Dan Morgenstern.

"Thank you. We are looking at the Giuffre Verves, Brookmeyer Verves and Mulligan Emarcy sextets at this time." I had suggested these and some other sets. I really hope these happen. Esp. the Mulligan set.

Thanks for these ideas. I will find out whether the seller is willing to take a IPMO if I offer to pay any conversion charges, and then take the next step if he refuses. It is not easy to buy yen where I live. It would cost a lot, and it will take a number of days. Bank transfers cost $20 and is instantaneous, so that may be the worst case scenario (short of not getting the CDs).

What do you think would be an appropriate level of compensation that I should offer to Hiroshi? I am thinking of asking him to send a check to this other seller, and just sending the same amount plus compensation amount to Hiroshi by paypal.
-
Yes, I know I can get them at the post office. But it seems that I can get them only in US dollars and not in Japanese yen. Or do you know differently?
-
You should certainly offer to pay Mr Tanno a service charge/handling fee. He is in business and shouldn't be expected to do this gratis. Yes, that sounds right.
-
He's the only one who can answer that question... Maybe I'll ask Hiroshi, after asking this other seller if he would accept a check from Hiroshi. I wish this other seller would accept paypal. Very difficult to buy from him.
-
Hiroshi cannot get these CDs as they are out of print even in Japan. I had asked him earlier, and he could not. I am considering asking him to send this seller a check in yen, and paying Hiroshi by paypal. Do you think I would be asking Hiroshi to do too much, and/or putting him in an awkward position?
-
Has anyone had experience with this? There is a seller in Japan (not Hiroshi Tanno) who has these CDs I really want, and he wants payment in IPMO, and not in paypal. Now, he wants it in Japanese yen. But I went to the post office today, and they told me that they can issue IPMOs only in US dollars. Hmmm... I'd really like to get these CDs but don't know how.

All your posts are giving me second thoughts about getting more Payton albums. I've just acquired from half.com "Fingerprinting" which Payton recorded with C. McBride and a guitarist whose name I cannot recall. I'll listen to it for a week or so and make up my mind as to whether I want more. But thanks again for your responses.
-
No. Another member let me know that this seller has some CDs I'm looking for on his website.
-
I know I'm being very philistine, but I've grown very weary of trying new contemporary jazz recordings, as so many times I've been disappointed. So, there are very few contemporary people whose recordings I try to keep up with. Now I am thinking of getting some Nicholas Payton albums. I really like his playing on Greg Osby's "St. Louis Shoes". And the little snipets I've heard on Tower.com are intriguing. Unlike many people, I like some of Wynton Marsalis's recordings (esp. "The Marcia Suite"), but I find Roy Hargrove a bit boring and uneventful. Payton seems more interesting than either. Any thoughts on Payton's works on Verve would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you have any experience with this seller, could you let me know your reactions/thoughts? Thanks.

FS: Newest Legacy Billie Holiday Collection
Bol replied to Bol's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I do not think Columbia will release all 10 discs from the box set. The 4 CDs released in 2003 are, I think, meant to be the cream of the crop of the box set. The 4 CDs contain the most famous and perhaps the best tracks, and in better sound quality than the box set. The 4 CDs were released all at once, and they cover the full time period covered by the box set. So, I do not expect more volumes.
