  1. Yikes!! Do they use any other shipping method?
  2. If you have, how long does it take? What are shipping charges like to the US? Are they dependable generally? Thanks in advance.
  3. This is all very depressing. In any case, don't forget the Lennie Niehaus titles.
  4. Brownie, I assume that all of those other books you mention are in French?
  5. Up with price reductions.
  6. The best jazz writing I've seen in a long time. Just ordered the book.

  8. I got this yesterday. Boy, I'll have to side with AMG on this one. It's a very nice session. I cannot help but feel at times that it would have been much better with acoustic piano and no extra percussion, but I know I am very conservative on those matters. I certainly hope that I won't suddenly become a fan of electric piano. All those post-1967 Miles Davis recordings that I've been avoiding may then suddenly become necessities. In any case, this is a very nice, and at times lyrical, session. Hokey at times, but that has its own charm.

Roberts, R. Mitchell] Helen Carr (Bethlehem Japan TOCJ-62081) obi [backed by quintet of D. Fagerquist, C. Mariano, D. Trenner, M. Bennett, S. Levey] [What Gary Giddins has said about Carr: Helen Carr, a Billie Holiday-influenced singer with a smile in her voice, a ticklish melisma, and personality to spare. Dead at 38 and soon forgotten, she would be no less obscure than Mingus's other vocalists except that she recorded two 1955 albums, which have just been reissued as Helen Carr: The Bethlehem Collection (Avenue Jazz). Even so, she is not mentioned in any jazz or pop reference book, proof that there were more golden-voiced warblers in that era than we know. She had a knack for finding overlooked songs—such as "Not Mine," "Summer Night," or "Moments Like This"—by the usual gang of golden-age writers, and could put her own stamp on moldy hits from the past, such as "Got a Date With an Angel" and "Do I Worry." She could swing when she had to, but that wasn't her métier. In her ballads, you may glimpse Mildred Bailey and Anita O'Day, an unlikely couple. But they are merely in the shadows of her own distinctive élan.] $9.50 each Stan Hasselgard & Benny Goodman, “At Click 1948” (Dragon) [w/ W. Gray, T. Wilson] Dave Holland, “What Goes Around” (ECM) w/ slip case Branford Marsalis, “Romare Bearden Revealed” (Marsalis) w/ slip case Paul Motian, Joe Lovano, Bill Frisell, “Bill Evans” (Winter & Winter) Steve Reich, “Music for 18 Musicians” (Nonesuch) $7 each Sonny Clark, “Cool Struttin’” (RVG) Stan Getz, “Café Montmartre” (EmArcy) Wynton Marsalis, “Selections from the Village Vanguard Box” (Columbia)
  10. I think I will. Thanks, everyone.
  11. What do people think about this? AMG says that it is a classic, and Penguin Guide says it is a big dud. Care to react? Thanks.
  12. Brownie, Thanks for your reaction. I think I will try "Doorways" first. If I like it, I will try "Fellini Jazz". The chief attraction for me here is Paul Motian. I've really been enjoying some recent recordings in which he plays: recordings by Lovano, Tony Malaby, and Bill McHenry. I am not such a big fan of Kenny Wheeler and Chris Potter. I find Wheeler too sentimental at times, and I find Potter a tad boring. But your recommendation certainly gives me a push, and I will try the recording if I like "Doorways". Thanks again. By the way, if you like Rota's music, you may want to try his classical chamber music recorded by Gidon Kremer and some of his associates (including the members of the always interesting and exciting Hagen Quartet). I think the CD was released by BIS, which I think is a Scandinavian label.
  13. Thanks so much. Those sound clips are very helpful.
  14. I've been trying to listen to sound clips from the following 2 new recordings without success. Enrico Pieranunzi, "Doorways" (Sunnyside) Enrico Pieranunzi, "Fellini Jazz" (Sunnyside) Does anyone know where I can find them? Any reactions from those who have listened to these CDs would also be appreciated.
  15. No, but that is one of the CDs that are next on my list. I hope the one Beatles song on it is not too distracting.
  16. I usually seek others' recommendations rather than make ones myself. But I've been so pleased with some new acquisitions, I thought I should recommend them. They are: Tony Malaby, "Adobe" (Sunnyside) w/ Drew Gress & Paul Motian Bill McHenry Quartet Featuring Paul Motian (Fresh Sound New Talent) w/ Ben Monder & Reid Anderson These are just very pleasing and interesting recordings. Both Malaby and McHenry are young tenor saxophonists (though Malaby records one amazing track on soprano), and they sing.
  17. I'm surprised that no one has said anything about this. Has anyone tried it? I have one of his trio CDs ("Diz"). It seems pleasant enough, but nothing extraordinary. Does anyone have any opinions about "Paseo" and "Supernova"? I'm a little worried about the fact that he plays keyboards on these. If they are like Jason Moran's "Facing Left", then I'd be fine with them. But if these are fusion records, I think I want to pass.
  18. I like the new Don Byron recording a lot, and thought that I should try Ralph Alessi's "This Against That" which also has Byron and Moran. Has anyone tried this and the companion duo album "Vice & Virtue"? Any reactions would be most appreciated. The Byron album really is amazingly good!!
  19. Yes, that's the one. Thanks for the info. I think I will pass on it for now, as I am not a fan of Baker's singing.
  20. Does anyone know on how many tracks of this reissue Baker sings? How is this album generally?
  21. Ed, Sorry about getting rid of the other thread. I had to move it here. Thanks for your reply too.
  22. Just read an interesting piece on Terrasson by Giddins in his book, "Visisons of Jazz". Any opinions on his Blue Note recordings?
  23. Up with price reductions.

  25. Jihoots, Thanks much, but I think that ($27) is more than I am willing to pay for this. I bought "Barney" for $15 or so, and I'm hoping I can do the same for the "More from Barney". I think the Japanese edition is no different than the French one. It is just the French version packaged with an obi strip. Thanks again, though.
